The Blue Bulls have included a number of players with recent Currie Cup experience in their side to contest the Under 21 final – against the Sharks – at Coca Cola Park on Saturday.

Coach Nollis Marais has not hesitated to select the strongest side available and the Sharks juniors will have their hands full playing against the likes of loose forwards Arno Both and CJ Stander, flyhalf Louis Fouche and centre Francois Venter, all of whom featured regularly for the Blue Bulls in the latter half of the Currie Cup season.

The side will be captained by Jono Ross – celebrating his birthday today – and contains further South African under 20 players in Sampie Mastriet, Adri Jacobs, Courtnall Skosaan and Lohan Jacobs, while former Sharks under 21 flyhalf, Willie du Plessis, has been included on the bench.

Du Plessis, who played his rugby at Affies before moving to the Sharks, will come up against good friend Heimar Williams, expected to be at inside centre for the Sharks. The pair played together at all levels starting from primary school and ending up in the same Durban Collegians side that also featured Sharks under 21 scrumhalf Cobus Reinach. There will be another school reunion on the cards when Piet Lindeque, expected to be at 13 for the Sharks, comes up against Francois Venter. The two played together for Grey College in 2009.

Blue Bulls under 21

15 Clayton Blommetjies, 14 Sampie Mastriet, 13 Ulrich Beyers, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Louis Fouché, 9 Lohan Jacobs, 8 CJ Stander, 7 Jono Ross (Capt), 6 Arno Botha, 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Gerno Eksteen, 3 Gerhard Engelbrecht, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Juan Schoeman.
Replacements: 16 Jacques Momberg, 17 Basil Short, 18 JJ Breet, 19 Dalton Davis, 20 Xander Redelinghuys, 21 Willie du Plessis, 22 Adri Jacobs.

  • Paul Anthony has done a fantastic job with this talented squad.
He has been well supporterd by his assistant coaches including our high performance manganer Eric Sauls.

A number of players have the chance to make the SA under 20 Squad.

Elton’s Bro Tony has come along way since last year he struggled to controll the match against a very well drilled wp under 19 side he is the highest point scorer this year and his kicking has improved i am sure he has been talking alot to his brother, father and kicking coack vlokkie.

William Small Smith has been magnificent perhaps the surprise x-factor  is christopher bosch he was signed as an outside centre but i heard he looks the goods at inside centre poor andile jho has been sitting on the bench for the whole season it shows bosch can jol.

Travis Ismael has impressed with his speed and power he can be a usefull asset to bulls rugby in the future.

The loose trio is very talented shaun adendorff from glenwood  has suprised a few people with his eye catching performances.
Nardus and Wiaan are class acts.

I expect a very tough match for the bulls under 19s.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : Shaun Adendorff was signed from glenwood as a number 8 but he has been converted to an openside flank and he has played well this year.

To keep out players like cloete wessels….big cj van der schyf and a few other loose forwards shows that he has grabbed his opportunities and cemented his place.

We like glenwood players  i think someone is has been doing undercover work at glenwood high school for the bulls scouts we have like 7 players in our system coming from glenwood not bad hehe.

  • I have watched the bulls under 21 this year they are not unbeatable.

The tight five is not that great but SA Under 20 players bongi and schoeman are great ball carriers..schoeman from affies is similar to frans malherbe he has a lean body physique highly rated by dawie theron.

The loose trio is without a doubt powerfull arno botha…cj srander and ross will be a handfull.

I hope jacobs has a great game he had a shocker last year for the under 19s.

We all know what frans ‘swys’ venter brings to the table he has been terrific this year a class act.

Ulrich Beyers is not as bad as people think he can break the line defences struggled to contain him this year he is a big boy.

The back three is talented, quick but not great on defence.
Watch out for mastriet that dude can jol wne given space.

  • This comes from Barend van Graan very interesting.

Our vision for the Vodacom Blue Bulls is to be a world class sports brand which results in a two-pronged approach – commercial success and optimizing the performances of our teams. We are delighted that the Sports Industry Awards judging panel has acknowledged our efforts, both on the field and off. Ultimately we want to set a global benchmark and become the most loved and innovative sports brand in South Africa and such recognition tells us that we are on the right track.

Heyneke Meyers job is made easy by Van Graan and Schwartz who work behind the scenes to ensure the bulls are on the right track.

The bulls have ex players and legends working at schools as coaches old Naas Botha is coaching waterkloof now that is why rugby in PTA is about to enter new heights.

We play a very fast paced, physical game which requires fit, strong players. Maybe something Paul Treu will look at as he is a clever coach, why be like the rest when we have our own unique style of players.

  • What poaching?!?!?! the bulls had to start from scratch compared to the dark days its about hard work and committment.

Go around the whole country and ask schools boys in primary school and high school which union do hey want to sign for ALOT say the bulls.

When you go to rugby festivals around the country when you get a chance to talk to a talented 12 year old the kid says.
‘I hope i play well so when i grow up i can get a bulls contract”

Its about desire, ambition and dream to wear the blue jersey.

Big Vic..Du preez,Bakkies,Danie,Hougaard have keft a legacy they are legends who have set the standard they are loved across the country.

  • @Megatron (Comment 22) : But Megatron seriously, there is no problems with offering kids better educational opportunities because they are good rugby players, however consideration must be given to the social well being of the kids as well.

I really don’t want to speculate, but I have it on good authority that Duncan Matthews, who incidently will return to the Bulls in 2013 is a case in point of a youngster who’s life has been turned into a misery because he wasn’t properly looked after.

One day this whole Bulls story will become headline news and I think there are going to be a few embarrassed Bulls officials.

If the Sharks did the same thing, I wud want them to be exposed. I’d want them to be put under pressure to bring about changes.

Having spoken to Payi, Tom, Marwana and Nanto, our E/Cape SBR players this year, I believe they are all happy and being looked after.

Like I’ve said. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the concept of having our best up and coming rugby players attend the best rugby schools where they can get the best training.

Virtually the whole Glenwood 1st team this year is made up of boarders, so a lot of them come from other regions to attend school in Durban. The one thing I’m sure of it that if you ask them if they are happy, being well treated and feel like they are part of the school, they’ll all say YES.

  • @beet (Comment 38) : All those people moaning about poaching players etc just dont see the bigger picture. Professional rugby has meant that boys who previously could not afford or had no hope of ever getting a good secondary nevermind tertiary education are now getting those opportunities if they are good players! This means the boys look afrer their bodies as it is their means of securing a future. In my view i think the schools that can afford it should “poach” as many players as possible from any and every area they can! Sport really does have the power to change lives now!

  • @Muzi (Comment 42) : Muzi. I like you. You’re a great source of new info, add a lot of value to various blogs and you have a good eye for spotting talent way before the rest of us even start to talk about these players.

There is a lot of honour and pride in supporting the Bulls. I even back many of the youngsters mentioned above and hope they succeed.

However you have to differiate here. The fact that you are aware of a possible wrongdoing does make you any less of a fan if you condemn that action and work towards seeing it corrected.

This issue has little to do with the Bulls senior players, junior players and most of their coaches. So fundamentally the team that you support on the field is free of wrongdoing. However there are people in the Bulls system who’s intentions are far from honourable. These guys need to be fingered and removed.

So don’t stop supporting the Bulls but don’t turn a blindeye to wrongdoing either.

I truly believe that the education system needs to make youngsters aware of what it means by signing contracts and agreeing to certain things etc. Bsically from the first time a player steps foot on the field he is auditioning for future education and employement whether we like it or not. There is always someone watching and taking notes.

  • @Muzi (Comment 54) : what exactly have the Sharks done with Piet Lindeque?

As a 19-year-old, he played u19. As a 20-year-old, he played Vodacom Cup and under 21. He will play Currie Cup next year…

Are you saying that because we DIDN’T throw him straight into senior rugby in his first year out of school we have somehow mistreated him?

Not countering Megatron’s argument though are you? In fact, you are just bearing him out.

He doesn’t bail on his team even though they are not producing the goods. One has to respect that.

I’m not taking a swipe at you though – I also enjoy your insights on the juniors.

    1) The Sharks are the team du jour in heaven
    2) Henry Honiball is the greatest Springbok ever
    3) Newcastle is where it’s at

When feeling conflicted, refer to facts 1, 2 & 3 above, and your doubts will fade away…

  • @Muzi (Comment 100) : Muzi, you should just give it a rest.

I disagree with Megatron. He thinks you’re straining to much, I think you’re driven by passion for rugby.

Megatron proves a good voice of reason on SW at times but he also seems to be overfond of the debate/argument/banter. Tomorrow or the next day, he’ll try to get under your skin again. If you respond in the wrong manner, you just give him the fuel he’s looking for.

My advice is rather focus on rugby than the fight.
