Saturday’s Currie Cup Final against the Lions will see a number of players celebrating personal milestones, yet will sadly also be the last one in Sharks colours for two of the squad.

Ross Skeate will earn his 20th Currie Cup cap for the Sharks when he runs onto the field and has this season established himself as one of the key men in the Sharks pack – one who will hopefully go on triple or quadruple that cap count in years to come. Another former Cape player who will reach a milestone is scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann, playing his 10th Currie Cup game for the Sharks on Saturday.

A pair of players on the bench stand to reach somewhat more significant milestones should they come on, with Lwazi Mvovo in line for his 40th cap and Eugene van Staden his 30th. Both players have played key roles in the Sharks’ recent Currie Cup resurgence and their dedication and devotion to the team is exemplary.

Stefan Terblanche looks set to be playing in his last game in Sharks colours – the veteran is widely tipped to leave Durban after the final to take up an overseas offer, although the destination is as-yet unknown. An experienced campaigner like Stef knows, of course, how quickly teams can be derailed in finals if they’re trying to give any particular player an emotional send-off and has wisely opted to keep his departure low-key.

There’s a strong likelihood that Saturday’s game will also mark scrumhalf Ross Cronje’s final appearance in black and white, with reports suggesting he has accepted an offer to move to the University of Johannesburg next year, along with twin brother Guy. This will see the brothers available to the Lions, or the UJ Varsity Cup team if surplus to provincial requirements.

  • As far as I understand the new Varsity Cup rules both Cronje brothers will be unavailable for Varsity cup as transfers are only allowed after a lay off period and players with a certain number of super caps are not allowed in VC! That excludes them from playing as far as I understand it!

  • @The Oracle (Comment 3) : I’ve had a look at the new rules.

They state that a player may not move from one member university to another without an “exceptional academic reason”. Since neither Ross nor Guy played for another university side in 2011, this won’t apply.

Regarding the other criterion, you may not play VC if you’ve played either 4 Super Rugby games or a senior test match. I know thta Guy has never played Super Rugby… just going to check on Ross’s caps quickly.

  • Ross Cronje was in the Sharks match 22 for the first 6 matches of the 2009 Super 14 season… he only came onto the field once, though (73rd minute of the second game again, ironically, the Lions) and hence only has one cap.
