Sharks to prevail in Currie Cup Final

It’s Currie Cup Final time and fans of both the Sharks and the Lions are starting to feel the nerves as the count-down to the last domestic rugby game of the season nears completion.

The Lions are at home and if you listen to their legion of new fans, including, it would seem, virtually every rugby writer in the country they seem to be carrying a somewhat unlikely favourites tag coming into this game. A lot of the rhetoric centres around the Lions supposedly greater “hunger” and the fact that they “play as a team”, these factors given by many as reason enough to predict victory over a Sharks outfit containing 16 current or former internationals.

Rugby is a simple game, though and while all the softer stuff can play a role in finals, I prefer to look at the more concrete aspects – who has the stronger pack, who has the better set piece play, which team has more experience in all of the “key positions” and so on. It was this style of analysis that allowed me to correctly predict a Sharks win over the Cheetahs last week, again against a backdrop of sentimentality-driven Cheetahs support and the same reasons lead me to believe that the Sharks will prevail again in the final.

Let’s look at things in the cold light of day. The Sharks will have the Lions number in the scrum and in the lineout – this much was clear the last time the teams played. The Sharks will need to watch Derick Minnie at the breakdown, but this in itself isn’t an insurmountable challenge as long as the team commits to the breakdown in suitable numbers. The Sharks will play a tight game, using their superior pack to their best advantage, with close in runners making yards over the advantage line and sucking in defenders. Lineout drives, pick-and-go and set scrum moves will be the order of the day and while pundits are right to question the performance of the Sharks backs – centres in particular – on attack this season, I feel that they have not been given enough credit for a series of good defensive performances in recent weeks that have seen opposition backs put under pressure. Furthermore, as long as the Sharks play a game that suits the strengths of their midfield, they’re unlikely to be exposed.

The Sharks, in short, hold most of the trump cards here – they have the big names, with finals experience, in the correct positions. They have the stronger pack and they have the ability to dictate the pace and direction of the game, through controlling possession and territory. They, of course, have the ability to throw the game by being lacklustre at the breakdown, throwing 50-50 passes and kicking away possession to the dangerous Lions backs. That scenario, to me, falls into the category of the Sharks losing the game, rather than the Lions necessarily winning it, because if the visitors play to their strengths, they should be able to prevent the Lions doing so. If it rains, as there is a 60% change of happening, the Sharks task becomes easier. More rain means more scrums and the more scrums the better, from a Sharks point of view.

Ultimately, the Lions have guts, hope, Derick Minnie and not a lot else. Oh – that and a lot of new fans.

Based on this, admittedly unsentimental analysis, I see the Sharks winning by a comfortable margin of 8-10 points.

  • look – this is obviously a very subjective analysis of the game… but ultimately, I feel, a valid one as well.

The thing I don’t get is why so many seasoned – and supposedly neutral – scribes are throwing all of their objectivity out of the window on this one and calling a result that doesn’t makes any sense based on analysis of the two sides.

  • No form-book or paper teams on a Final – so Lions could take it.

However, this is the Sharks’s game to lose. Our biggest weaknesses are at the breakdown and at centre.

The latter weakness is not going to be exploited by the big Lions centres the way WP would have done – the Oupas lack pace and skill, but they can tackle and take contact.

With regardd to the rucks, starting Bismark, Deysel and Keegan should give us parity here, while Beast, Alberts and Jannie are good cleaners as well.

Freddie is a bit of an unknown: if he is off, then Hollenbach, Jantjies and the big Lions loosies will eat him, but if he is on, then he will keep turning them around all day, and look to open space up for a few inside runners.

Will be a cracker of a game!

  • With rain forecast for the whole day tomorrow in Joburg. Think Sharks have the edge.

    Sharks by 5 or 7.

I would personally liked to have seen Lambie start at fh with Freddie starting at sh. Odwa at fb and start with Mvovo at 11.

Anyhow with the rain doubt our backs will be a worry.

Minnie could be a factor at the breakdown. Not sure if it was right leaving out Botes on the bench. Then we needed to cover ourselves at lock. We have to get to the breakdowns in numbers.

Also Mark is a good ref just hope he is fair to both teams. After the disaster refs at the wc really hope a ref don’t have a bearing on the outcome of a game. Not saying cheating not at all. Just that he is blows the same for both teams and is consistent.

  • Definitely a lot of new fans… Isn’t it amazing how the cockroaches appear from under the floorboards when they think they might get some food.

Nothing annoys me more than the fans who are huge supporters of a team (be it Sharks, Lions, Bulls, Weer Probeer) when the going is good but disappear when the going is tough.

What we’re going to see tomorrow is 60,000 fair weather fans if the stadium is full of Lions supporters!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) :Firstly I DO believe we will win this.

I think the guys who are saying we won’t (I haven’t been anywhere online other than bike sites, SW and FB so haven’t seen any of the stuff) have valid reasons to think we won’t win.

There have been so many games this season where we should have won comfortably that we didn’t win comfortably or lost. Just as recently as last week we had to tear the arse off the cat in the 2nd half to win the game against a side we should have been walking all over.

The Lions haven’t had that problem, if a team was there for the thumping, the Lions gave it to them, with the exception of the Pumas.

Based on those track records over the season, the scribes have valid beliefs that we won’t win.

  • I personally have refrained from commenting any where in the build up to the final, because I would by now have probably been banned from every site I am registered!

The Lions have reached the final, even in a so called ‘watered down’ competition, they have got there to the surprise of many, with the exception of a few die hard suporters like myself.
Over the years, I have never given up, and this season have never doubted. We made the final, for me, that is an achievement in itself, and I will savour that as a vast improvement over past failures. To win it would be a bonus, but just getting there has been so sweet.

Good luck to both teams, I hope for a cracking game, and I hope that whatever the outcome, my team carries this form and success into next year and beyond.

“Well, the Lions aren’t doing so well so I’ll support the Bulls” or vice versa. My father-in-law comes from Joburg (but lives in Pretoria) professes to be a Lions fan but has a Bulls jersey in the cupboard. I’d rather die than wear another team’s colours but maybe I’m too fanatical.

Hahahaha just kidding. My cousin’s wedding in Pretoria. Getting married on her birthday. Her husband to be must have been afraid he’s gonna forget their anniversary plus he only has to buy her one present for her birthday and their anniversary!

  • If the Lions play the tackle ball situations as well as they did last week and keep the game fast…and since the Lions backs have played extremely well I will tip the Lions…

If the Sharks play it as tight (which means commit a lot of players to breakdown to slow the game down)…it will be a low scoring game and 10 points plus as predicted makes absolutely no sense…

However…it is going to be close…and whoever gets to stamp their game plan off for the longest period of time during the game and the team that takes their opportunities….will come out tops…Sharks take their opportunities well….

The Lions let opportunities slip against WP…but dominated enough to still pull through…wont be the case today….so they gonna have to cash in when they get sniff…else they will make it very tough for themselves…

  • Ouch… hopefully this brings some introspection from the writer of this ‘piece’ (for lack of a better word), from the blind Plumtree supporters… and the over-rated players themselves (I doubt all of the above)…

Sharks will drop another place in the S15 under ‘all of the above’!

  • @bryce_in_oz (Comment 91) : wow… you’ve been gone for a while.

Funny thing, though, is that before you left, I was under the impression that we were on good terms… perhaps even friends. I guess you somehow missed all the concerned messages on Facebook (or maybe not, since you removed me there).

So now I’m just the ‘writer’ of a ‘piece’, eh bryce? Thanks mate… appreciated,

  • @robdylan (Comment 92) : What did you expect? It is Sunday night in Aus, Bryce has been at the sauce again, some things never change, you should know this by now.

Bryce is now a “paster” for Reitz, so he has to attack you.
