The Sharks head to Coca-Cola Park today aiming to defend the Currie Cup title that they won last year.

The Lions, playing at home, seem to have the majority of the public support – particularly from neutrals keen to see them break their 12-year trophy drought. The Sharks, though, have a stronger quad on paper, although some inconsistent showings throughout the competition see most pundtis backing the Lions to squeak a close game, thanks mostly to a perceived greater sense of cohesion and team spirit.

Both sides are coached by Kiwis – John Plumtree and John Mitchell hailing from the same North Island backwater of Hawera – although the two men have both played down the role that their personal rivalry, as well as close friendship, might play in today’s encounter.

Kick-off at Coce Cola Park is at 17h30 today.

Golden Lions: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Doppies la Grange, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Joshua Strauss (captain), 7 Michael Rhodes, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 CJ van der Linde.
Replacements: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse/JC Janse van Rensburg, 18 Warren Whiteley, 19 Cobus Grobbelaar, 20 Butch James, 21 Dylan Des Fountain, 22 James Kamana.

Sharks: 15 Patrick Lambie, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Stefan Terblanché, 12 Marius Joubert, 11 JP Pietersen, 10 Frederic Michalak, 9 Conrad Hoffmann, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Keegan Daniel (captain), 5 Ross Skeate, 4 Jean Deysel, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Eugene van Staden, 18 Alistair Hargreaves, 19 Marcell Coetzee, 20 Ross Cronjé, 21 Adrian Jacobs, 22 Lwazi Mvovo.

Date: Saturday, October 29
Venue: Coca-Cola Park, Johannesburg
Kick-off: 17.30 (15.30 GMT)
Expected weather: Not the greatest – a chance of thunderstorms with a 60 percent chance of rain, a high of 22°C, dropping to 15°C.
Referee: Mark Lawrence
Assistant referees: Stefan Breytenbach, Marius Jonker
TMO: Johann Meuwesen

  • I posted this during the week and seems my prediction is coming true.

” How good is Jean Deysal at competing at the breakdown and at turnovers? The reason I ask this is, the Lions have been really good at this part of the game. The whole cliche that game is won up front is slowly changing, to the game is won at the breakdown. Springbok vs Australia in the quarter-finals comes to mind, if we ignore for a second the cataracts in Bryce Lawrence’s eyes.

Derick Minnie will give us all sort of problems if the Sharks are not wary in this area of the game. Plus Doppies and his WWE experience helps the Lions contest the Breakdown to a higher degree.

Last year the Sharks delt with the Western Mountaineers quite easily when the country was still obsessed about fetchers and the lack of them. Many a arrogant Province supporter used to tell me, “Ja but the Saarks don’t have an out and out fetcher”. Well Province went out and out of the final. In that game we didn’t need a fetcher and relied on some clever cleaning at the breakdowns and one Meneer Bismarck. Remember McLOeds try? Originated from the a turnover by the Meneer himself.

The reason why I bring this up is what happens if Bismarck gets injured? How good has Keagan, Deysal or Marcels been at the breakdown. To me they all great ball carriers. I know pre-injury Deysal used to be quite good at it. However I am not sure if he has been this season and Plum has turned him into a replacement for Alberts. If the
game as my prediction will be won or lost at the breakdown, with what was written above, the sharks would not go wrong with Botes instead of Marcel on the bench”

This has been one of the most one-sided CC finals I can recall, exposing the SAME problems we witnessed in our mediocre S15 campaign this year…

Its a bit like the WP and their front row issues. Sharks need to wake up and ask some hard questions of themselves. There is a great squad available for the super 15, but we have to stop kidding ourselves we are covered in several key positions.

Things just aren’t right. I can’t see this set up winning the S15 next year and things need to change.

Plumtree must go first. Sure, he won two Currie Cups in his 4 years but we have been abjectly mediocre in the Super 14/15 in that period (the REAL test). There are clear and consistent weaknesses which are seemingly not being addressed at all. No way will things miraculously just change for the better in February next year with the same set up.

  • My Shark impressions are:

We let ourselves down with poor discipline, giving away too many penalties, thus stopping our own momentum.

Our centres are way too old and slow.

    Deysel is NOT a lock.

Lambie needs to control the game from 10, I don’t give a damn what they do with Freddie.

Speaking of which, why not put Freddie at 9, Hoffman is not making it there. He was imo the weakest link.

We NEED to learn to play like the Lions did tonight. I have been hammering away at that for some years now. Idle through the easy games and you WILL NOT get it right in the crucial ones.

Mitchell is some distance ahead of Plumtree in that regard.

Like in the Springbok team, the Sharks are carrying too many names that was good sometime in the past and unless the house is cleaned from time to time, the guests and later the occupants will become dead wood. The days of the so called ball carriers and nothing else, may come to an end sooner than later. Ask the Bulls why they deteriorated so fast the last 2 years. Lions were balanced, Sharks of the scale.

  • what a hiding. When last has a team got beaten by 25 points in a final? Its a disgrace. Before the game i always knew sharks would lose bcos the whole background to the game meant this game was more important to the lions. In rugby the team that is more desperate normally wins. But to catch a hiding like that? How many of the sharks players grew up in kzn? How many of the sharks players grew up going to kings park every weekend supporting the team? Bismarck is the best hooker or even player in the world but how much did he want it today? Had he been playing for free state would he have had as much passion as he does for the boks? I feel for plum in this regard bcos u would expect professionals to perform but surely this cannot save him. His constant fuck ups with adi jacobs is beyond words. If ever there was a coach going through the motions its john plumtree. Rudoph strauli was a national disgrace after the boot camp but the sharks saw fit to give him a lifetime contract to sign the likes of marius joubert and bosman when we had true young durban men in brad barrit and waylon murray. This team is still good enough to maybe get into a s15 semi final but we will never win the super 15 with this lot.

  • Plum HAS to start with Lambie at 10 next year. Don’t WASTE our best 10 at fb. Lambie is our best 10 he is wasted at fb. Lambie just does not deserve to be messed about. Last year he was the mom of match in the CC final. Was our conference best fh in SuperRugby too. So why the heck we play Freddie ahead of Lambie at 10 is crazy. We also have Viljoen coming next year for fb. Let Freddie play scrummie for SuperRugby. Really don’t rate Hoffman much.

Our biggest problem is our centre pairing. If we don’t get ourselves centres we will never ever have a chance next year. We need to try our youngsters there from U21′s. Cause Stefan will have left and Joubert is just not up to this level. Mvovo too should always be starting ahead of Odwa.

Anyhow still proud of our boys making the final.

We need a lot of work before SuperRugby.

  • I’m an emotional wreck this year. How’s this for a bad year.
    1) Proteas choked in the Cricket World Cup Again
    2) The Sharks blow hot and cold through the Super Rugby Season then just when they give us hope get pummeled out vs the Crusaders in the Playoffs
3)The Boks Lose 3 out of the four Tri-Nations games and then proceed to get kicked out of the quarters in the most cruelest of manners

4)Bafana made us believe we qualified for the Afcon then realised we didn’t.
    5) The Proteas still suck, albiet they have a new coach, but lose in all the games that matter the most I.e the ODI match yesterday.
    6) The Sharks get whipped in the Currie Cup Final. I’m more hurt that we lost by such a margin. What makes it worst is we got a captain next year that could not keep his composure under pressure. 4 or so penalty kicks went missinf because we went for the Try. We never get any. Its finals rugby. If we went for Poles we would have kept the Lions under pressure.

Anyways someone get me a doctor.

Sorry couldn’t resist. Anyway good work Lions, not the result I was expecting, but an excellent display of team rugby. The Lions look good for the Super Rugby season up ahead. Pity for the Sharks, just wasn’t one of their days, though to see their Springbok scrum get penalized so much was startling.

All in all a good currie cup season, with most unions looking good for the future, thanks to Sharksworld for the hard work and to everyone here for the input. See you next season.

“Ultimately, the Lions have guts, hope, Derick Minnie and not a lot else. Oh – that and a lot of new fans.”

Shocking Rob. Shocking. You have the ability and knowledge to become a really great rugby writer, but your arrogance will be your downfall. The way you address some of your “supporters” is indicative of this.

I’ll probably be ripped apart for this, but having the humbleness to say “well done” is an admirable quality.

Well done Sharks, you played well, but it wasn’t meant to be your year.

  • Great game Lions you showed guts and that you can step up. John Mitchell made a bunch of no names, rejects and has beens into champions. Josh Strauss is a great leader and its no surprise that when he leads he brings the best out of the Lions. To the Sharks, I was happy when Michelak was declared fit because that meant you could waste your best player at FB. Taute is a better FB than Lambie but Lambie can out play Jantjies at FH or inside centre, just fire Plumtree and get a good coach if I may try to get Jimmy Stonehouse of the Pumas one of the most underrated coaches in SA

  • I too was not happy when Freddie was declared fit, as I knew this meant that Lambie would be kept at fullback. To me it is glaringly obvious that Lambie is not a fullback. Yes, he is good under the high ball and he can slot into the line occasionally, and in the absence of anyone else suitable he can hold his own. But he is a star at flyhalf, from where he can run the game and really shine.
I am a great fan of Keegan Daniel, but he really showed last night that he is not captaincy material, wrong decisions regarding taking the penalties early on, lacked composure and in general the side seemed rudderless. Looking back on our 2011 Currie Cup season I can’t believe that we managed to finish 2nd on the log after some of the inept displays the team dished up, so maybe, even though it pains me to say this, the team that deserved to win the competition ended up as champions.

Maybe Strauli has a bigger influence on team selection. After all, he buys the players and if they don’t play then how would he look? Or is it Plum that goes to him and says we dint have centres please buy one/two/three?

    Well done Lions.

Speed7… I’m going to ban you from this site for no other reason than I think you’re a nob. Same reason I blocked you on twitter.

As for willa… Well, maybe go look at the quality of your own writing before telling me what I can or can’t become.

What does it help if he is the slowest wing in the cc and can not catch a ball.

I hope that the memory of last night’s special win stays with you for a long, long time and I hope – purely for your sake – that the Lions can repay the faith you have shown in every match they play next year (expect for hte ones against the Sharks, of course!)

  • @robdylan (Comment 252) : This raises the interesting issue of expressing a viewpoint in public forums: yes, any bias in slant is mitigated by the fact of the forum being one which unashamedly is directed at Sharks supporters. On the other hand (Darren), does this justify the censure of a dissenting viewpoint? I think not.

Plenty of fans from all sorts of walks of life – supporting all sorts of teams – post here and obey the rules. A few do not and speed7 has always fitted into that latter category.

It’s important to note as well that a number of the others that have been banned have been Sharks supporters.

  • @JustPlainSHARK (Comment 224) : I did….even said that thw plus 10 margin makes no sense cozz the only way Sharks could win was to keep it tight which meant committing more to the breakdown which equals a low scoring game…

ButI have no hard feelings…he applied his mind and had a theory…he which in most part made sense…but cannot take blame for the Sharks not pulling through to prove it right…

The only mistake he made was that he did not give the Lions breakdown play enough credit…which had the biggest impact on the game…

And Rob did say he is going to look like a fool if the theory does not pan out…I think he was brave…and it backfired…it happens

So guys stop being self righteous…had it payed off you’d all be singing Rob D’s praises for calling it…

I think he suffered enough without us having to rub it in…

  • @WilladieLeeu (Comment 296) : Willie

I’ve had a bit of time to calm down here and I need to apologise for breaking my own rules re conduct on this site. As a rule, I don’t like cheap shots and would have appreciated it more if you’d questioned my match preview at the time it was written, rather than with the benefit of hindsight. That’s by-the-by though and the reality is that I did get my call wrong – and horribly so.

You can call it arrogance, or over-confidence or whatever it is, but the fact that a number of other people, infinitely more experienced than me, made the same call, makes me feel like I wasn’t completely out on a limb.

That said, your team was superb and blew us away. We know that we need to go back to the drawing board and we (or I) will try our best to accept that reality with better grace in future.

Keep well mate – and congrats on your side’s great achievement.
