Doing the Final – Bosveld Style

It’s been needed for a while. It has been a long year. Career wise, family wise, rugby wise and life wise. So when my husband asked me a few weeks back: “when do we have an ‘off’ weekend, we need to get away for the weekend?” I jumped with both arms and feet into the opportunity.

We booked. Rugged and rough. Taking the two ‘city chicks’ in our household for a weekend of quad biking, no TV and no luxuries. Then it hit me! “You know it’s the weekend of the Final???” Too late. Booked and paid.

But, I have a husband who understands his wife. “I will make a plan!” We still needed to trash the Cheetahs – but there was no doubt in my mind that we were gonna overcome that little hurdle.

Arriving Friday, everything was calm. In my mind and heart. Well, considering a few yelps and grils from too little blondes because of worms and spiders and goggas. And let’s not forget the “bokke leaving clues” ala the four year old. (For those who is still in the dark – that is the spoor of the antelope) And the “ewe’s” when I explained what the ball was that the dung beetle was rolling around! Needless to say my suggestion about having a “bokdrol spitting” competition was thrown out the window with my words still hanging in the air – so to speak!
They got into the Bush-vibe very quickly considering that they are born and bred city girls.

Then Saturday arrived. Pretty darn early. We managed to keep ourselves busy with riding in the mud, taking photo’s going for a walk.

Then it was time to set up the “contraption” that was gonna be “the game” to us for 80 minutes. By now, my nerves were shot. Anticipation is a dreadful disease!

Dearest set up the caravan dish. Then we grabbed one of the only two dining chairs….strapped a 7 inch DVD car monitor to it. Connected the DSTV and VOILA! – There was picture!

About 5 minutes later there was this very very distressed little “love?…..LOVE?…….” coming from my throat. “What’s wrong?”He came running in. I just managed to point at the screen….the signal was GONE!!

My Hero jumped into the bakkie – drove to where he could get signal on the farm and phoned MultiChoice…..about 15 minutes before kick-off there was a picture and a smile from ear to ear! In that dreadful 20 minutes prior, which felt like forever, I was trying to convince myself that listening on the radio would be better than nothing!

I was sitting inches away from the screen. At one stage considering trying the binoculars for that “big screen” feeling, but I knew this was what we had to work with, this time. I shed a tear, got goosies and sang the Anthem with the boys. And then Currie Cup Final 2011 was upon us. It was TIME!

We all know how it panned out. Half time it was gear changing time. I put on a different Sharks shirt, instructed the oldest to put on her Sharks Jersey, stuck a Sharks Cap on the youngest head. Frantic. Desperate.

It was clear that long before it was over, it was over. Bitterly disappointed because I know my boys could have done better. And I was thankful for Vodacom for once in my life for not having signal. I simply would not have been able to take the sneer snotty comments from “new-founded” and “once-off” Lions fans.

In the bush there is plenty of time. Time to think next to the camp fire, until late into the night. You and your thoughts.

It kept baffling me….history was in place….Sharks gear was in place….BMT was in place…Bokke was in place…hell, even Morne’s prediction / jinx was in place…How did it all go so terribly wrong???

It turned and tumbled in my head. No answers. The hours dragged by.

The fire died….I had to make peace with it. Had to call it a night….

The fire died….was that the answer…?

  • Nice one, we will be emotional for a while longer, but we’ll get through it. We’re Sharks we can get up from this and be even better than before.

  • Nice Ice.
Now for the real reason why we lost…sory to burden you with this but it was primarily because YOU were in the bush and not at the park with a possie of Sharksworld supporters.
You / we all know they put in that bit more when you are in the stadium.

  • Like you said, it’s been a long year, may be we all just need to put this behind us and look forward to what next year might bring. All of us has analized the game and diagnosed the problems, I’m sure the Sharks staff and players has as well, let just hope that there will be changes for the better otherwise they might have to make Sharksworld the staff ;-)
