Whitehead move confirmed (I mean really confirmed)

They say that the third time is the charm and when it comes to our coverage of Western Province centre Tim Whitehead’s move to the Sharks, we can finally put this one to bed after already talking about it twice.

There was the initial rumour back in September, followed by our own unofficial confirmation a few weeks back. As of last night, though, the mainstream media reported the story, with Beeld confirming that Whitehead has joined the Sharks on a two-year deal.

The player himself confirmed the rumour on Twitter last night, telling Sharksworld that he is “really looking forward to the next few years in Durban”. Sharksworld will try to catch up with Tim for an interview once he arrives on the East Coast, but in the meantime, we’d like to take the opportunity to wish him a very warm welcome to the Sharks family.

  • Here was my response to Bergshark’s question about Whitehead’s D from a previous thread. It’s basically what I’m hoping we get out of him:

I believe we buy Whitehead based on what he offers on attack. A player who can get thru a gap. A player that has the ability to use his skills to make things happen for the guys around him. A player with good ball-handling skills, good lateral movement and decent straightline speed. A player who thinks attack – his gut tells him when something is on and his legs can take him where he wants him to go. We don’t have this at the moment. We desperately need it.

I don’t for a minute believe that defense will be TW’s strong point but it should be adequate. The No.13 channel can often be the easiest position to defend in, you’re often able to get to the ball recipient or into his path with a second of him getting the ball, it’s far easier to narrow the angle, get hands on the player and even if you can’t get enough on him to bring him to ground, you’re able to unsettle his balance enough to render him ineffective as an attacking threat and make him easy prey for the cover D.

I’m hoping for a player in Whitehead who is not quite as good as Ebersohn going forward but who is a lot more committed when asked to lead with the shoulder or wrap up an opponent on or before the gainline.

You have however indirectly touched on one major concern, his injury-proneness. The last thing we need is a player who stuggles to make the team coz of niggles.

  • I still dont think this solves our problem at centre.
Great to have him but from what I saw of him he is solid if unspectacular.
So we’re still left with him, Bosman, Joubert, Adi as our centres? Not bad but equaly not great.
Would love to see the following backline in next years S15.
    15 Viljoen
    14 JP
    13 Whitehead/Adi/Joubert?
    12 Jordaan
    11 Mvovo
    10 Lambie
    9 McLeod

Unfortunately it’ll more than likely look like this.

    15 Lambie
    14 Odwa
    13 Marius
    12 Bosman
    11 JP
    10 Michalak
    9 Mcleod

    Extremely ploddish.

Buying 1 decent centre from the Cape isn’t going to solve all our problems. The Sharks need short and long term plans at centre and around the park. That’s why I stressed the importance of upgrading our junior coaching facilities and becoming the market leaders in SA in this area.

  • Frederic Michalak wants to come back to Europe in order to make an international return for France, the Natal Sharks flyhalf said on Tuesday.

Michalak, the Currie Cup’s top scorer with 192 points, left Toulouse in May to sign for the Sharks where he also played one season in 2008.

“I know they would like to extend my contract but I want to come back to Europe next summer because I want to play with Les Bleus again and that is easier when you play in Europe,” he told French sports daily L’Equipe.

Michalak, 29, won the last of his 54 caps against Wales in the 2010 Six Nations Championship.

This would help to settle Lambie at 10.

Fortunately Adi has his own lobbyist around here who more than makes up for 1 or 2 adverse things that I may have to say.

+ I’m sure AJ is probably the nicest friendliest guy around.

+ I use to really enjoy watching him play once upon a time and will aways have good things to say about some of the good aggressive rugga he’s played in the past esp. when he was a no-name branded player cutting up defenses alongside Ethienne Botha at the Valke.

But times change hey  Time to move on.

  • @Ben (Comment 76) : Lindeque is still young so give him time…no need to rush. There is also Joubert to be in the mix remember. I really believe JLP should be given an extended run somewhere..harsh to judge a player on 1 performance. Same with Prinsloo

  • @SheldonK (Comment 79) : I did ask if Lindeque is one for the FUTURE. I’m not rushing.

If it was up to me Joubert would not even have a sniff of getting into the team.

  • @Ben (Comment 80) : Yeh look im not a Joubert fan hey, not really a Jacobs fan either to be honest. I havtn watched Lindeque that much to fully judge, but Stemmet was a better player and the Sharks sent him on his way.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 81) : How highly do you rate that other centre that came on for Williams at 12 in the final against the Bulls. Forgot his name.

  • @Ben (Comment 82) : Jared Meyer…he is a good player but def needs a bit more time before making the step up to the Senior side.

  • @Ben (Comment 77) : Hey Ben, these are just my thoughts about Piet Lindeque.

I first watched Piet play back in 2008 as a star schoolboy for Grey College and was very impressed. When I discovered that he would be joining the Sharks Academy, I was over the moon. I remember being very excited about a well known Sharks junior centre from Toti once upon a time. As Muzi wud say, that guy who eventually went to play for Australia was the “beez-neez”. So I really wanted Piet to play just like that guy did. Piet hasn’t got there for me but there is no reason why he can’t still make it big as a senior player one day. He was a key signing for the Sharks and as a result I believe he will be given every opportunity possible to succeed and make the step up to senior level here in Durban.

This is what I enjoy about Piet. He is quick. He’s able to run well off an inside centre’s shoulder. That break that Jacobs made against the Griquas from his own 22m. Piet will do that for you. He’ll make look even cleaner coz he’s faster than Adi. That cut inside of Adi’s that resulted in the try against the Leopards, Piet will do that for you and again he’ll make it look even easier than Adi did. He’s a good straightline runner and he does fairly well running off the shoulder.

However these are the areas I’d like to see him improve in.

    Decision-making and improvisation.
At the moment he just looks like he goes thru the motions. If there is a good rugby brain in his head, he’s not working it enough. I want to see a thinking player who’s weighing up the kick-run-pass options and making the good decisions. When Piet gets into space, he’s the kind of player that gets excited and tends to put the blinkers on. I want to see a player who sums up the situation in a flash and is equally good at linking as he is at running.
    Maneuverability.
Like I said he’s great in straight lines. I want better lateral movement. Not every player has a great step but top players are always good at changing direction. In tight well marked areas on the field, weaving or shuffling is also important for getting over the D-line or buying time for support to arrive. Piet needs to improve here.
    Strength, hand-off and balance.
It’s so vital at the top level to have this vend off weapon and I believe it goes hand-in-hand with being sure footed. I want Piet to be stronger on his feet in contact. I sometimes feel he goes down too easily.

I’m just an armchair fan but I’ve witnessed these qualities in other centres of similar ages to Piet and haven’t seen enough of it in him yet. But I’m holding out for him to get there with more application and good training in the juniors. Sometimes like we’ve seen with Marcell, it just takes a few months in the offseason for a player to click and transform himself.

Whatever happens in his career tho, Piet has made it to a level that 90% of the guys he’s played against at school could never have reached. He’s a success story already.

  • @Ben (Comment 87) : I think it was Zeilinga. Paul moved to 12 once Heimar was off. Jared Meyer has been a regular straight swap for Piet of late. But the subs followed quiet closely one after the other.

  • In view of what’s hapening with the springboks I would love it if we kept lambie at 15 . And as for flyhalf and centre we need to start looking at young options like Jordaan at centre , he would be one for the future and at Flyhalf can we please go and visit our shopping Mall in Free State and Buy that Goosen boy , imagine that boy at 10 , reinach 9 . 11 sithole , 12 Jordaan , 13 Whitehead 14 JP . 15 Lambie . Now that would be a realli potent backline .

  • @beet (Comment 93) : Yeh look i also havnt seen that much of Jared Meyer at that level cos he hasnt got much of a chance so hard to judge really but he has made an impact everytime. I think the u21 centres stayed the same every game. Would have liked to see Zeilinga at 10 with Jordaan at 12 and Meyer at 13 for at least a couple games.
