It seems that a bit of an unintentional media storm has erupted over the somewhat “unusual” design of the shorts that the South African sevens squad were photographed in yesterday.
The general consensus seems to be that the design of the shorts makes it look as though the players are wearing their undies on the outside… with some going so far as saying that it makes the players look like they’re wearing nappies.
The good news is, the players won’t play in those shorts. SA Rugby’s clarification is below:
“The Springbok Sevens team will be playing the HSBC Sevens World Series in the newly designed jersey and in traditional white shorts. Just like the Springboks had alternative kit at the recent Rugby World Cup, which they used to train in, the shorts that the Springbok Sevens players were photographed in on Tuesday, will only be used in training.”
Panic over… back to silly season!

Post a pic of the shorts, preferably the one from the Canterbury SA FB page.
It looks flippen funny.
I know we field youngsters in the 7s but most of these guys are still in diapers?
@KSA Shark © (Comment 2) : it’s hillarious those broeks!
I don’t think this is a clarification as much as it is a correction of a major fashion screw-up.
Why would they unveil the correct jersey with training shorts?
For once SARU were quick on their feet.
yeah
Shame I wonder how long it took the guys to stand still in front of the camera for that photo
Given Canterbury’s tweets, you can bet your ass SA Rugby stepped in to fix a design disaster.
This was last minute fix a #%^!@ up stuff right there!
Good on them though – it is a shocker of a design.
is humorous…even for a training kit.
not a big fan of the jersey either.
I’ve added the picture for those who have not seen it.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 9) :
No man why did you have to go do that!
@Morné (Comment 10) : I like sharing jokes
Is it April. It has to be…
Whew I am glad they did.
Although this is probably meaningless, but for I am glad to say that I think I was one of the first to bust with this story on twitter. Infact I think the only person faster than me was @BlitzBokke himself and Die Burger website.
Anyways I’m happy they sorted it out, and I got strange feeling that was a PR quick fix rather than what SARU is saying. Im sure Canterbury had to take action.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 9) : thanx for the pic!! FUNNY
@Mocho (Comment 13) :
Why did they simply not stick to the green jersey theme throughout?
You take the nappy white out and imagine those lines continuing into the shorts it would have looked quite flash I reckon.
@Morné (Comment 15) : Agreed.
Watch them now reverse the White and green on the shorts and make it look like they are playing in speedos
@Morné (Comment 15) : Well this is just a theory, but it was probably the quickest solution than having to send designs and manufacture them again.
If they didn’t do the white underpants design and continued with green I also think it will look pretty flash. Also aint the BlitzBokke B team playing soon, so I am sure they have deadlines.
That short design was set to be what Scotland would play in at the world cup, until it got presented to the public of course, and was similarily shunted out to be ‘training shorts’ shortly after.
It would be a great tactic mind, wear them around so your team gets used to them, whip them out matchday and run in the tries as the opposition stand by the halfway line facepalming themselves.
Those pants really are horrible, I wont even use them as boxers
like the shirts, the shorts on the other hand, I will just say I am happy it is not the match shorts.
I assumed it was an amateur photoshop job when it popped up on facebook. Where may I purchase this fine courture?? (I always felt that I was not bullied enough during school)
