Lions confirm Cronje coup

The Lions have announced a number of new signing ahead of the 2012 season, with the Cronje twins, Ross and Guy, among them.

The blonde brothers from Michaelhouse, who were instrumental in the Sharks under 19 side’s capturing of the age group trophy in 2008 – the last time a Sharks junior side has won silverware – have endured a frustrating start to their senior provincial careers in Durban. Scrumhalf Ross was included in the Sharks 2009 Super 14 squad, sitting on the bench 6 times, but only coming on once for a total of 12 minutes’ game time. Flyhalf Guy found himself very briefly thrust into the limelight later that year as first-choice flyhalf during the Currie Cup, before suspension and a year-long injury saw him drop so far out of the reckoning that he’s been unable to crack even the Vodacom Cup side.

Ross enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance in this year’s Currie Cup, though, with the early-season injury to Conrad Hoffmann and Charl McLeod’s Tr-Nations commitments seeing him elevated to starting scrumhalf for the first four games of the competition. In ll, he played 10 matches this year, adding to the 4 Currie Cup appearances he picked up in previous campaigns.

With flyhalf Burton Francis leaving the Lions (destination currently unknown), Guy will join Elton Jantjies and Butch James as flyhalf options, while the Lions have also announced the signing of Whestley Moolman from the Leoaprds – he will join Ross in providing scrumhalf options outside of Michael Bondesio.

Moolman’s younger brother Bradley, a centre who played for the Blue Bulls and South Africa at age group centre, is also on his way to the Lions, along with possibly the most significant signing any domestic team has yet made – that of Griquas lock forward Hendrik Roodt.

  • Time to ditch Currie Cup semi-finals :!:

Waste of time playing 10 rounds to get rid of 2 teams.

Going straight to a final after having to perform well throughout the entire Currie Cup makes much more sense with only 6 teams taking part.

  • Burton Francis leaving the Lions will hopefully be good news for a different Cronje – Hein Cronje.

I’d really like to see what Hein can do at senior level.

  • The twins just never seemed to progress on from the Junior levels…not sure if that is due to a lack of coaching or not enough effort put in by the players themselves. The Lions seem to be building a good squad there though. Henrick Roodt could go far under Mitchell and Ackerman’s leadership.

  • @beet (Comment 4) : That Hein Cronje looks very decent and wouldnt mind seeing him off the bench a couple times. The u21 Lions fullback is good though, pity he is behind Taute in pecking order. He may have to move provinces or positions.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : Well he is a big boy and if he can become a disciplined Ackerman then yes id put him in without a doubt…if him and the other Lions lock (cant remember name this morning) form a good partnership then Bekker may find himself out in the cold.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 13) :

Well, Bekker got injured, but while fit he’s consistently been the best lock in Super rugby.

I can quote statistics which would back up that claim, but my eyes tell me the same thing. He took pretty much twice as many line-outs on their own throw as any other lock this year and was the most dangerous lock by far ball in hand. His tackling stats were also good. Matfield making slightly more but also missing twice as many.

Bekker, if given consistent game-time in the Springbok 5 jersey, could be unmatched in world rugby.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 16) : Yeh i agree with you that Bekker has been oustanding when he has played. I think its just a matter of him staying injury free though. But we both know that we do need more than 1 option at lock. And no Flip VD Merwe cannot be an option!

Just to clarify. EPL refers to English Premier League Football. Generally on the football chatsites, we have ITKs who are close to the club and ‘hear’ rumours about possible transfers and thus bring it to our attention before the media do. Hope this clears it out :|

  • There is an old saying in the Free State, size and weight only matters in a butchery. Keegan Daniel, Heinrich Brussow, Stephen Sykes,Ruben Thorne are all excellent rugby players, not the tallest and heaviest though. They all have the same qualities to make a good rugby player, guts, commitment and a never “say die” attitude. Get players with these qualities and no team in the world will beat you.

    Dude

Steven Sykes was normal size for a lock. 1.98m & 117kg is on the bigger scale.

Reuben Thorne was also pretty big for a blindside flanker. 1.92m and 107kg. That’s at the very least average, not small.

And Heinrich Brussow is built like a freaking bus. He crams 102kg’s into a 1.81m frame. He’s very solid and the low centre of gravity compliments the role he’s asked to perform.

Then we go to Keegan Daniel. He’s a bit taller and more then 10kg’s lighter. That’s probably part of the reason why he is so ineffective in his position.
