Round one wrap:
The first round of the season saw a few happenings and the most regular of these most probably the Dolphins not getting result out of the two games. The Titans winning their first game with a bonus point and then losing their 2nd, handing the opposition a bonus point just shows this season is gonna be exciting. The highlight of the first round has to go to the Cobras innings of putting up a score of 379 in their 50 overs against the Lions team. In this game Cobras opener Richard Levi scored 110 runs from 57 balls, scoring the fastest 100(53) in the SA domestic OD competitions.
AB de Viliers became the first batsmen given out for obstructing the field when Ryan Mclaren tried to throw down the stumps an AB came into the line of the ball.
After the first round of games the Cobras and Warriors are ahead on 6 points with the Knights and Titans following on 5 points each. The Dolphins are next on the log with 4 points from their two rained out games, with the Lions not so hot on their heals with 0 points.

Yep let’s see if the Dolphins can actually get to play a game.
I don’t like this obstruction rule one bit. Instead of aiming for the stumps you can just try and hit the batsmen and then appeal.
@Ben (Comment 1) : only if the batsmen changes the line he is running, the rule hasn’t changed much, dis net beter bewoord
This morning I heard Pollock speak on ECR and saying that’s of his opinion that a player like Levi should have been given a chance even before the WC and players like Smith that’s not performing should be dropped..
@Franshark: shaun pollock?
@BR (Comment 2) : But how would they know the ball would have hit the stumps? I think its a bit unfair to be given out in this manner. That’s what I’m saying. As soon as the batsman looks like he is covering his stumps you just have to through the ball against him. Irrelative of whether the ball would have hit the stumps. This rule causes unnecessary confusion. I don’t like it.
@Ben (Comment 5) : with the old rule, the umpires had to be certain the ball would have hit the wickets directly, this meaning if the ball would have reached the wickets if it weren’t obstructed and there were a fielder in with a shout for a run out if the ball would have reached him it was tough luck for the fielder,that is also unfair, the new rule just consider the fielder at the stumps who might have had a oppertunity for a run out, remember most run outs are not from direct hits
@BR (Comment 6) : also it is normally batsmen that are unsure if they are going to make their ground that changes the line they are running.
I am happy with the change but it is probally going to bite me in the ass with a crucial decision going against the dolphins in a important match.
@BR (Comment 6) : @BR (Comment 7) : I’m telling you now fielders are going to take liberties with this new law and hit the batsman on purpose instead of aiming for the stumps whenever they get a chance.
@Ben (Comment 8) : then you as a batsmen must just hold your line and if they throw you deliberately you pick up a couple of penalty runs along the way, they have so much padding it’s not like it is going to hurt
@BR (Comment 9) : Yeah let’s see how this all turns out..
@Ben (Comment 10) : like I said it is probably going to come back and bite me
@bergshark (Comment 4) : yes
@BR (Comment 11) : I did not see the incident with AB in the Titans game but apparently that was controversial.. Saying he did not deter from his line but was still given out… Its now a case of was that a straight line of running or not…
@Franshark (Comment 13) : You see. After 1 incedent the confusion sets in already. This is a shit rule!
@Franshark (Comment 13) : also didn’t see it so I won’t be able to comment on it, maar ek sal myself nie baie daaraan steur nie die titans ondersteunets is amper so erg soos die bulls sin
@Franshark (Comment 13) : also didn’t see it so I won’t be able to comment on it, maar ek sal myself nie baie daaraan steur nie die titans ondersteuners is amper so erg soos die bulls sin
@BR (Comment 16) : ja hulle is ne
Smith actually said today not in so many words that tahir is playing tomorrow
@Franshark (Comment 18) : That’s great! What did he say?
@Franshark (Comment 18) : that is the best possible news before the test
@Franshark (Comment 18) : nothing to do with the test but I have heard there are going to be 7 teams in the t20, any idea of who the 7th team might be
@BR (Comment 21) : Wouldn’t be surprised if its Zimbabwe. But I have no idea.
@BR (Comment 21) : I also don’t know, yet

@Franshark (Comment 24) : We are in desperate need of a young Specialised Wicket keeping batsman.
@Ben (Comment 26) : absolutely
@Franshark (Comment 27) : Any idea how old Puttick is now? I’m guessing he’s in his late 20′s, early 30′s.
At this moment there is Tsolekile(lions), van Wyk(knights), boucher(warriors), Smit and Barnes(dolphins), Vilas(Cobras), Kuhn(titans)
@Ben (Comment 28) : in 30 days he’ll be 31
@Franshark (Comment 29) : How old is Vilas?
@Ben (Comment 31) : he’s 26, and his batting stats is very impressive in all forms…
@Franshark (Comment 32) : @Ben (Comment 31) :
Heino Kuhn FTW!!
He should take over from Boucher imho!! Brilliant batsman!!
@wpw (Comment 33) : Haven’t seen much of him..
@wpw (Comment 33) : he is 27, batting averages is very close to the same as Vilas, but he already got a chance in the T20′s… So I think he’s more preferred… At this stage.
So why do you guys think the Dolphins cricket union doesn’t have any money?
This I can tell you now, 30min before the game and its raining…
The sun is shining and the covers are comming off…

WICKET! – PJ Hughes c Boucher b Philander 9; Aus 13/2 (6ov)
Congratulations to Boucher on taking his 500th catch in test cricket!
So JP Duminy misses out completely??
I suppose Prince brings more experience and solidity to the batting line up…
@BR (Comment 21) :
think it will be a mix between players from zim and some other old players ..
@Zibbie (Comment 52) :
mmm something wrong with my avatar ….
Lunch: Aus 39/2 after 15
Steyn gets Ponting!
16.2
Steyn to Ponting, OUT, he has Ponting in trouble now, there’s half an appeal for lbw and they are considering a review. Yeah, we have the first review of the series. Steyn makes him play now, full ball angling in towards the middle and leg line. Ponting thrusts the front pad well across, as his wont, and then has to play around it with the ball straightening a degree down the line. No inside edge on that. This is touble for the Punter. It’s hit him on the front pad as the bat scissors down and hits the pad. The ball heads on unimpeded into the pads, and that’s super adjacent. Ponting is on his way. Steyn 1, Ponting 0.
RT Ponting lbw b Steyn 8 (51m 25b 0×4 1×6) SR: 32.00

This must be 5 or 6 times the decision is been overturned… Gees why’s the umpires doing the trouble of even looking..
@wpw (Comment 84) : What a joke CSA has become.
Hahahahahaha! Australia’s tail scores more runs than the WHOLE SA team!
And within an hour or two we can say “what a joke this Aussie team has become. Now 21 for 8.
I think its safe to just say WHAT A JOKE THE GAME OF CRICKET HAS BECOME.
Barely credible anymore.
The score is 21/8 now can’t keep up with detail…
22/ 9 now.
What a strange game…
Lyon and Siddle still in, 13 overs gone.
Philander has 5 wickets
Now for 9.
Suspend the groundsman for at least 5 years, that seems the norm for suspensions handed out today. Maybe he can busy himself with woodwork.
WTH?
Are there potholes in the pitch or what?
WICKET! – SE Marsh lbw b Pheelander 0; Aus 21/9 – Aus lead by 209.
@Salmonoid (Comment 97) : for a pitch where a guy scored 151
What the record for lowest score in an innings of test cricket?
@Franshark (Comment 101) : Day 2 and 29 wickets have fallen and and the chances are that by close of play a few more will have fallen.
I can only think that Clarke closed his eyes whenever he played a shot, there is no other logical reason for him playing a chanceless innings.
47 all out
AB witht the catch, Steyn with the delivery
Australia 2nd 47 (18ov); VD Philander 5/15 M Morkel 3/9 – South Africa need 236 to win
@hendrikp (Comment 102) : 26, made by NZ, Aus was all out for 36 in 1902
@Salmonoid (Comment 103) : then maybe we should be batting blindfolded
No seriously this is heavy…
@Salmonoid (Comment 97) : that seems the norm for suspensions handed out today.
Daring!
SA will be 15 all out.
@klempie (Comment 108) : And you thought we were going to walk over the Aussies in this series? What made you think that?
We were in the 1st innings when the day started. The 4th innings will commence in a bit.
@Ben (Comment 110) : That was before CSA started falling apart.
@Ben (Comment 110) : ben it stil can happen….
@Franshark (Comment 113) : News flash. We lost the ODI series. So walking over the Aussies can’t still happen…
@klempie (Comment 112) : Dude CSA started falling apart in the 1999 WC semi.
@Franshark (Comment 113) : I’m talking about the series as a whole. Not the test series.
@Ben (Comment 115) : I don’t understand why you say 99. If the premise is that heart breaking losses is an indicator for CSA falling apart, then surely you’d have to go back to WC ’92?
@klempie (Comment 117) : Yeah I was 5 years old in 1992. So I have no idea what you are talking about..
@Ben (Comment 116) : I see
WICKET – JA Rudolph c Haddin b Siddle 14; SA 27/1 – SA need 209 more to win
Excellent debut by philander.
On this pitch bowling straight is getting the wickets, and that is the one area Smith is strong in batting, so here’s to hoping he goes on to a good score
SA 48/1
Peter Kirsten just referred to Shane Watson as ‘Ryan’ Watson.
Sammy
I believe this is the first test match played at Newlands in early November in 60 years.
Do you think that could be one of the reasons the grounds man has struggled to prepare a decent wicket??
SA 68/1 from 15 overs, batting at a good rate
Wow Hussey drop Amla on the last ball of the day…
SA 81/1 still needing 155 runs in 3days with 9 wickets standing
@Franshark: that was a crazy shot by amla ( last ball of the day’s play ).
@bergshark (Comment 127) : it was, but I’m stoked that they are looking so positive, they are putting the pressure on the Ausies. Its so easy to fall into a batting safe mode and then start putting the pressure on theirselfs….
@Franshark (Comment 128) : I agree..
Its 155 runs 9 wickets and a strange pitch to go today
Don’t ye just love this date….
OMW!!
It’s 11/11/11 and SA are on 111/1 and in a little over 11min it will be 11:11
The world is going to end right then and there.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 132) : BUGGER!!!
They’ve ruined the best possible trivia question ever.
Oh well the new trivia question for years to come is: “Which cricket team was stranded on 111/1 for more than 11 balls on 11/11/11?”
Amla reaches his 50 after being dropped twice. Smith 54*
SA 122/1
Target is 236.
SA need 111 more runs to win.
Time 11:11
Date 11/11/11
100 partnership between Hash and Smith, 102 runs to win…
@KSA Shark © (Comment 133) :
Amla needs 31 more runs to reach 4000 test runs!!
@wpw (Comment 138) : Tells us when he needs 11, THEN it will be news worthy.
@wpw (Comment 138) : He’s on 70 now. Was that 31 required with his score on 70?
That would be pretty cool getting a century with a run and then 4000 career runs with the next.
60 runs now needed. Smith to 80. Amla on 76. SA 176/1. Partnership 150
SA 187/1. 49 needed to win. Amla 83 Smith 84.
HM Amla 102* (126b) – South Africa need 27 more runs.
Wonder if smith will reach his 100?
SA need 16 to win and Smith needs 12…
@KSA Shark © (Comment 140) :
Oh shut up!!
WIC
KET – HM Amla c Clarke b Johnson 112 (134b); SA 222/2 – SA need another 14 runs to win
South Africa won by 8 wickets – SA 236/2 (GC Smith 101* HM Amla 112)
MOM: Vernon Philander
Shouldn’t smith be credited with a four there of the last delivery? Shouldn’t he then be 104 not out?
Off the last delivery.
Great stuff from Smith and Amla. Great way for Smith to shut his critics up.
@Ben (Comment 152) : now to shut them up in the shorter versions of the game as well, I always felt the critic on him in test are unfair he has always performed well in tests.

@BR (Comment 154) : @Franshark (Comment 156) :
Didn’t expect that!
@Franshark (Comment 158) : I won’t say we wipped the floor with them, sure we were cruising along,maaar toe hap ons n babel, we needed 20 from 2.3 overs but then they exploded again and we required 4 from 1.3 overs, they had me nervous at a point.
Well done dolphins
