Rose without a Garden

I beg your pardon, I never promised you a Rose garden…Griquas will not be renewing Earl Rose’s contract.

Rose, who had a bit of a raw deal at the Lions, rugby career was given a second change just over a year ago by the Kimberley based team.

The Cheetahs however decided not to use him in the Superugby series. The closest he came was when the Stormers borrowed him as an emergency back-up.

Arni van Rooyen of Griquas confirmed that Rose would need to look for some rugga time elsewhere other than the Kwasse.

“We considered contracting Rose again, but the parties involved could not reach an agreement on an amount.”

In the CC season Rose had to warm the bench whilst Riaan Viljoen was utilized on fly half. But with Viljoen now leaving for the Sharks, Bulls fly half, Marnitz Boshoff and Border full back, Willie le Roux was contracted, leaving no space in the garden for Rose.

Rose’s agent, Anthony Johnson, confirmed that they are looking at other options, especially overseas.

The garden-less Rose said he does not care where he plays, as long as he can play.

The question remains….will there be a garden looking for the Rose..

Exactly, he really is not the worst around but must also realise that pricing yourself out of the market at smaller union sends the wrong message to anyone else that may be interested. His agent may be as much to blame for that as Rose’s attitude.

I have to say the Stormers are being silly if indeed they are pursuing Frans Steyn. They are more than covered in the backline dept, rather go blow a cool million on a good tight forward.

We were not even talking rugby, but I was wearing my Sharks jersey and he said I should be happy cause our center problems were probably sorted that Frans was wanting to come back to The Sharks and Durban. WPW may be right I can get my son to ask him again his name is Johan.

Otherwise we could well have had him running out as our flyhalf this year.

Biggest mistake he ever made was leaving Cape Town. But Gio Aplon loves him for it.

Not arguing he’s had some good performances, and is a valuable player for the Sharks, but not quite in the same league as a modern-day loose forward. There are many better blindsides in SA IMO.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 78) : I dissagree in 08 he was the best in the country and he is getting back to his best . Under Alberts and Kankowski he has had few chances to be in a full strength side and when he has he has been immense .

  • @Talent (Comment 79) :

Fair enough. Might convince me during the Super 15, who knows.

I’d throw him in with Francois Louw as one of those players who does very little throughout the game, but gets noticed for the things they do.

Blindsides I would put ahead of him are:
Juan Smith – obviously irreplaceable when at his best.
Willem Alberts – no explanation needed
Duane Vermeulen – Big workrate off the ball. Know he played 8 but I think of him as a blindside.

And then I think Arno Botha & Marcell Coetzee have it over him in terms of their ‘feel’ for the game. Still need to follow it up with consistent performances, but can hardly judge them for that while Deysel has played reasonably little rugby.

Whoops and Ashley Johnson as well. Probably our most dangerous ball-carrying loose forward outside of Nick Koster & perhaps Ryan Kankowski. He just needs to stop missing so many tackles.

  • Little off topic and random but…

I was trying to find out where Conrad Jantjes was going and came across a name I haven’t heard in a while. Deon Kayser.

Now there was an under-appreciated player. One of my favorites back then.

Probably put Straueli in charge of trying to recruit him.

After the traumatic experiences at Kamp Staaldraad where he had them naked and at gunpoint and probably checked the younger ones out for size… no surprise that didn’t work out.

Nope I’ll never forgive Straueli for what he did to the Springboks. Biggest moron in SA rugby.

  • @hendrikp: jaque fourie and his agent approached the sharks.think the problem was the uncertainty over if they could win it if it went to coutt( fourie ‘s agent was also ludik’s and alberts’ agent- and both are now at the sharks).
So straeuli and co weren’t certain, weepee jumped in and took their opportunity, won the court case and signed fourie.then the sharks still were uncertain about the eligibility of ludik and alberts ( who they said had basically the same contract as j fourie’s because they had seen all three contracts when they were approached by j fourie and his agent).

  • Remember that sad situation where the lions were trying to block both alberts and ludik play for the sharks last year before the start of the sr season ’10?
