Sharks lure SA Schools fullback

Sharksworld has learned that SA Schools fullback Sean Robinson will join the Sharks on an under 19 contract next year.

Robinson, currently writing matric at Waterkloof Hoër in Pretoria, is Pretoria born and bred, having attended Garsfontein Primary in the capital’s eastern suburbs. A wonderfully talented attacking player with the nose for the tryline, his defection from the land of the blue to the East Coast is something of a coup for the Sharks.

In the words of our schoolboy rugby fanatic beet, Sean is “one of those natural pedigree players, earmarked for greatness from a young age. He is quick, runs good lines and times his runs to perfection. He also has some good footwork and is a tryline predator”.

Robinson is also a gifted athlete, having represented Gauteng in long jump. He also boasts a best 100m time of 10.7 seconds.

Well done to the Sharks on signing such a promising young player. Welcome to Durban, Robbie… we look forward to many great outings in black and white in the years to come!

  • This is great news. Robertson has been a standout player in SBR this year.

According to Ludz he’s scored 25 tries, many would have been against top schools. This puts him right up there with the best finishers around.

Our KZN star centre Tyler Fisher managed 17 tries in about 18 starts which is outstanding, so 25 tries is off the charts in terms of tryscoring.

One usually expects WP to have a good backline and the Bulls have contracted some of the best backs coming out of school but I think our u19 line for 2012 is going to be potent, hopefully the best in the age group.

  • @Muzi (Comment 35) : Something that’s been bugging me:

KES, PBHS, Bennies, St Johns, St Albans, Jeppe, St Stithians

In any given year if these schools had to play the KZN equivalently ranked school team, they wud give them a good run for their money and probably win a few.

I’m sure that if these schools were part of KZN, we wud have seen a good few representatives from these schools at CW and Academy Week over the years. But they never seem to get a shot. What happens to the talented players from these schools? Do they just give up rugby after school or what? The Lions and Bulls don’t seem to take in many at junior level. I sometimes get the feeling they’re treated like they don’t exist in their respective regions.

  • good signing by the Sharks, best fullback at schoolboy level by far this past season. Meyer scored 19 tries this season,so I’d say you guys have boys who have a nose for the tryline in Fisher,Meyer and Robinson, the Sharks u19 seem to be looking good for 2012. So lets just say Ungerer at 9,Rob du Preez at flyhalf and inside centre that SWD oke 13. Tyler Fisher/Sphu Msutwana, depending on who they decide should play at wing, both are capable centres and are equally comfortable at wing, other wing might be that Keegan Boulle and 15. Robinson (what do you guys think of his SA u20 prospects?)

  • @Muzi (Comment 39) : The Sharks u21 team have had defensive issues in that area near the ruck fringes all season long. They were bad at shutting down those spaces quickly and tended to look very leaky there at times.

Not taking anything away from Venter. He was my MotM on the day but Heimar can’t shoulder the entire blame alone. It’s not like soccer. There isn’t marker assigned to a shadow a player. When Venter cut and moved into a different zone, he needs to be picked up by another defender but wasn’t. Venter often exploited a gap that had me asking several times this season: “what were 6/7 – 8 – 9 – 10 doing to leave that big hole”. The team’s communication and organisation left a bit to be desired here a number of times this season.

Also remember the score was 36-30 at one stage and I think if we had used our pen’s to set up field position attacking lineouts instead of going for ambitious shots at goal, a different team wud have been crowned champs that day. But no sour grapes. The Bulls deserved their win.

  • Beet there are politics involved with craven week selection in johannesburg. The selectors look at Monument,Florida,KES,Marais Viljoen,Bastion and Helpmekaar. The problem with the saints schools is that they do not take rugby seriously like the afrikaans powerhouse schools.Saints schools do not lure enough players or poach players for that matter they use junior players from the primary school but unfortunetely these players are found wanting because they are too small.Independant schools like the saints schools invest a lot in academics so if you are a talented rugby player go join kes or monnas.Bulls scouts and lions scouts do not look at the saints schools even when bennies had the best saints side in gauteng the sharks approached us with letters bulls scouts did not give a stuff very disappointing.

  • @Muzi (Comment 48) : we had a very similar problem at Boys High, muz…particularly in Pretoria in those days we were considered the “sagte engels” and never got a look in for the Bulls at CW. One or two guys bucked the trend in my years… I remember Stephen Temple and then later John Smit being picked for the BBs and also SA Schools, but those guys were few and far between.

Also, we NEVER got our guys offered Bulls contracts. That only changed years later when Mr Ants got involved with junior coaching at the Bulls.

  • @Muzi, nice to hear. I have been having debates with KES old boys all year on rugby365 as they claimed their 365 ranking of 5th in the country was right. In fact, some thought it should be higher. I mean come on, they play St Johns, St Stithians, Parktown, Jeppe etc and have unbeaten seasons. Well, it’s pretty easy to be unbeaten against weak opposition. I think a fair ranking for KES in 2011 would have been about 14th or 15th in the country. A good side but nothing that would have scared Waterkloof, Affies, Monnas, Grey Bloem, Selborne, Noord Kaap, Paarl Boys etc…

  • @Muzi (Comment 82) : If that is true, its a bit of a joke. Every Johannes, Kobus and Marius knows Chilliboy is a leader. Some players were complimenting his leadership at the rwc even when he wasn’t playing.

Maybe the hope Spies will all of a sudden stand up and lead from the front with captain cy on his shoulders.

Dale Steyn ( a cricketer I know) said something rather interesting after day one of the first test, when he was ruffling Michael Clark a bit with a few bouncers and body shots. He said that he intended to take out the captain so the rest of the team disintegrates.

That’s one thing that the Sharks do well – always have to be on the look out for good players from other areas to bring to the Academy. Means guys from smaller schools stand a chance. I mean, look at Lewies, for e.g…. no way is a guy from Eldoraigne going to get a look in at the Bulls…

  • I’m in the usual Saffa haunt of Wimbledon, but looking to come back to the land of the elephant in Oct next year. I would love to help coach schoolboy rugby at Glenwood if in Durban. Yep, I played 1st & 2nd team Glenwood in 1996 and went on an athletics tour up to Pretoria Boys High in 1995 (Pentagular – Maritzburg College, DHS, KES, Glenwood and PBHS). We dediced to attack the Frog on the Sat after a Bulls win, what chaos! We ended up in some girls school dorm done the road, not sure what girls school though. Good times! There was this dodgy pool bar in the square for youngsters, but luckily we wormed our way into the Frog!

Maybe it was because my uncle Dennis Morrissey played 1st team there in 1964 and 1965, making KZN schools both years and my dad and uncles being DHS Old Boys. I was brought up to love my school. I know the blades of grass on Dixons very well, many a time I had to weed there for detention. I see they renamed a field at Kearsney!! You a Kearsney Old Boy are you not?

There is one change from the original list but I’d rather email you on that one.

For a few years now I was calling for the Fest to be increased by 2 teams and for either Westville or College to be invited. As you know, having been to 1, it’s a new fest in the middle of the Easter Holidays, so crowd attendances for day 1 & 2 can be better. Inviting the school from just down the highway is going to boost attendance figures for sure + Westville are expected to have a good team next year.

It’s a good mix now but scheduling the fixtures will be problematic coz many of these teams either meet in traditional fixtures eg Glenwood vs GCB and Affies and PRG vs GCB or are invited to Wildeklawer where they are bound to be matched up one 1 of the 2 match days there.

The growth spurt in standard 9 helped, almost a foot and 15kg in a year! Well, this is a great site and keep up the good work. • @Grasshopper (Comment 145) : Marlu Gouws is a fantastic lineout jumper. He’d be an option at lock. Even if he isn’t he’s bound to be the go-to man in the lineouts. I can see him taking a lot of ball at 2 and 4 on switches.

I also get a feeling Warren Potgieter didn’t come down to GM to play fullback. It’s like playing Ronan o’Gara at 15. I think Tom should move to 15 and let that 1 u16 centre play wing. The youngster is sharp. I can’t remember his name. I think it’s Ngcobo.

It will also be interesting to see who Gwd settle on for hooker.

Check out the size of this guy:

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 154) : Biaggio is a big hooker. I think he has a very good chance of starting. I didn’t watch any u16 games so these guys are always the unknowns from every school for me.

Let me find out more about the tight 5 developments and get back to you. It’s gonna be a weakness for Kearsney.

    I think u16 Tyler Smith at 10.
    Valenti definitely at 13
Lambert at 15 and big Schramm at wing but he can even play centre if Kubheka shifts to 10 . Ngidi is also back. He’s a wing. Seals can cover wing as well and Bowman can play 13. So options are good for Kearsney in the line.

Props Jon Deighton, Ben Karnezos and M.Maloi
    4.???
    6. Tanner Harwood
    8. Klintworth/Mudgeway

The guys have started training, so let me get the whole squad and find out which forwards look set to start.

Yup SharksWorld is pretty good because everyone tends to behave themselves.

There is the odd Sharks lover who thinks the Springboks should be the Sharks team with a few extra player from elsewhere to fill the gaps, but outside of that it’s very good debate.

You also get the ones who come up with some stuff that would make 99% of us roll our eyes (Talent, I’m talking about you).

But cheers Rob, this is probably the one rugby website where you won’t get your head bitten off for voicing an opinion.

  • @Muzi (Comment 159) :

On the anti bulls, anti spies thing.

I don’t think he’s anti Bulls, but at the moment, the Bulls players have it much easier then players from other provinces in getting Springbok caps.

How were we ever expected to win anything in Australasia (during the Tri Nations) by leaving the best Bulls players at home, and selecting some of the others who shouldn’t be near the squad.

There are too many good players from other provinces losing out because of favoritism shown towards the Bulls. That you have to admit.

And Spies hasn’t done anything to disprove Keo’s anti-Spies opinions. The way he went in the World Cup, I’d also have preferred Joe van Niekerk to be honest

The Springboks will be at their best when all 5 provinces are strong, and all the best players at every province are given equal opportunity of making the Springbok squad. That’s when I’ll be happy.

That statement is largely true. As a public servicefor newcomers to Sharksworld, here follows a list of things which WILL get your head bitten off on the site:

    1) Suggesting Stefan Terblanche should coach at the Sharks without first obtaining a formal qualification
    2) Mentioning that you visit other rugby websites, particularly ***.co.za
    3) Any sort of comment that could be construed as a positive statement about Deon Stegmann or Derick Kuun
    4) Any sort of comment that could be construed as a positive statement about Deon Stegmann or Derick Kuun
    5) Pining for the return of Frans Steyn
    6) Criticism of Brad Barrit
    7) Politics
    8) DanielS or LudiCk

More to be added as and when they occur to me.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 167) :
First of all I want to say that I always appreciate your sense of humour.

    But…

I don’t think point 1 is precise enough

I have been present when Stef has shared his experience based knowledge with our u18 Craven Week team. The players listened intently. Many of them have dreams of pursuing careers in rugby and there realised that there is much they can learn about on the field and off the field rugby issues from a highly respected player like Stef. And since he is a good communicator, I believe that he would make a positive contribution as a coach or mentor at any level of the game.

However underestimating the job requirements and experience needed to be a conditioning coach in a professional team…different story. This is not a field of expertise for a professional rugby player.

SA rugby already has far too many unqualified personal running around already. We have administrators trying to do the jobs of entrepreneurs, ex-Boks pretending to be analysts and commentators, a mascot that belongs in the McDonalds collection

I’d like the Sharks to be the nation’s leaders when it comes to the development of juniors.

  • @beet (Comment 178) : I don’t want to harp on about this.

This year I met a young conditioning coach at a prominent school in Durban. Newly qualified. This is his 1st year working. He’s doing an outstanding job. The same team struggled to close out games in 2010, now they are amongst the strongest finishers in the country. The captain of the team even made specific mention of the young coaches input after their come from behind win in one of the toughest games of their season.

Anyway he’s a very friendly and helpful coach. He told me that his dream is to one day work for a professional team.

Like many other good coaches and referees in our system, he’s starting out at bottom level and working his way up.

It’s not uncommon to see these young guys working for the big rugby schools. There are probably even more at club level.

  • @beet (Comment 179) : Beet, given that we are on this topic again, I just want to reiterate that my intention was never to have Stef just walking into a coaching job without gaining the necessary skills and qualifications; look where that got us with Hugh Reece-Edwards and kevin Putt  I am advocating a system like a bursary scheme where the Sharks fund Stef’s studies, in exchange for him working for them when he has gained the necessary skills (on the provision – this is important – that he is actually good enough). In the interim, he would be a good presence to have around acting as mentor and role model.

He is grooming his cv for higher honours, maybe taking the Jake White route! What happened to the ex craven week coach at Hilton, Tony Richter I think it was?
