Spies is Bulls captain

The Blue Bulls have named Pierre Spies as their captain for the 2012 Super Rugby campaign.

Bok hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle was widely tipped to succeed Victor Matfield as Bulls skipper, but theLoftus brains trust have instead gone with a man boasting no senior captaincy experience in Spies. His deputy will be veteran centre Wynand Olivier.

Other potential captaincy candidates to be overlooked, presumably on the grounds that none of them is an assured starter, include flank Dewald Potgieter and lock Wilhelm Steenkamp.

Spies told the Blue Bulls website that “it was not such a big surprise though, as I had it in the back of my mind that I could be asked to lead the team when Victor retired. I was privileged in my career at the Bulls and the Springboks to play with great captains and I could certainly learn a lot from them.”

Chilliboy was not asked to comment, clearly… just another in the long line of Pretoria Boys High boys being shown that Affies will always be a step above in the Bulls pecking order!

  • In other news the bulls have revealed that they will not make the long trip to Outeniqua High School in George for preseason like the past years.
The bulls will stay in Pretoria instead.

  • It was a cloudy Saturday afternoon at Loftus. It was the midst of a Super Rugby semi-final with the pressure on and the tension high. The Bulls were playing catch up to the much tougher Sharks opposition and were eight points behind. With nine minutes left on the clock the normally vocal spectators were silent.

Then the blowing of the whistle echoed throughout. Relief!! A huge sigh can be heard from the tiring Bulls pack. They get a penalty! The Pretoria crowd scream in joy!

Bulls Captain and warrior asks his lieutenant Meisiekind if theys should go for poles or try their luck with a lineout.
Meisiekind respond, ” Naa,lets go hide in that corner. We can flex our muscles and go comb our hair.”

Rumour has it that video analysts are still searching footage of the match for the two missing players

Hmm. He’s competing with Dean Greyling, not those two.

Can’t imagine Greyling has spent much time at tighthead either.

He’ll have to be content with either playing Vodacom Cup and the odd game of Super rugby, or playing well enough to have them drop Greyling, as the bench spot will always be reserved for a tighthead.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 13) : Skosan earned credits from his u19 season which was pretty good. That along with his size got him into the JWC team.

I was told that Dawie Theron would inherit a good structure with useful intel when he was announced as coach. Clearly this was not the case, that’s how guys like Skosan and Moolman got selected.

I think we need a proper national u20 compo leading up to the JWC to at least give the coach an opport. to select form players rather than rely on a few trials, a game here and there and much reputation from the previous season’s u19 compo.

Spies as captain,if Pine Pienaar was the man in charge,I’d have my doubts, but lets be honest now, they have Heyneke Meyer(am sure you don’t have to be a Bulls fan to appreciate his rugby wisdom) and with him there am sure there’s good reasoning, have to be honest though, didn’t expect this at all

I want Spies to captain the Boks…unlikely with Burger/Smith being the main candidates; but i think Spies can do a good job, and hopefully we see Spies using his handoff more often…when he goes in with the shoulder he doesn’t break the tackles too often…his handoff allows him to stretch his legs a bit.

  • If I was Chilliboy I’d move on. They don’t appreciate him in Pretoria, and he is one hell of a hooker.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 75) : Where could he go to? This country is blessed with some brilliant hookers.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 76) : True. If I was him I’d go play in France. He’ll be a huge hit and make a bucketload of money.

Cape Town will welcome him with open arms. As would the Lions I reckon.

  • @robdylan (Comment 53) : My favorite pastime, searching for comments and news on old “alma maters” and guess what, here I am again commenting on one of your comments.
Just a bit of “unknown” info (unknown for those not in the know naturally):
Mellett (not Mellet) is as highly rated as he is, because physically he trumps most stats put up by any of the props in the country… no s*&.
Tested at a couple of the Institutes used by the guys, he is the fastest prop, up there with the rest of the tight five as well, he is one of the strongest scrummagers, just ask chadwick why he was dropped as first choice in the final trials of the u20 Bok side…, let me tell you: fiddling around, as coaches do, the props were rotated to head up against each other, Mellett was the only one to out-scrum both Chadwick and Coenie Oosthuizen AT BOTH Loosehead and Tighthead. Now, ask anyone that know, for a specialist loosehead to pack down at tighthead and still trump his opponent = strength, since tighthead is more technical as opposed to loosehead. I mean, look at Os, he could shine at loosehead because of his immense strength, but lacking technical prowess, struggled at tighthead. Hence, on the bench as backup for both tighthead and loosehead = a specialist tighthead.
    So, to summarize:
Mellett is physically summed up by guys like Schwartz and Meyer as the modern prop, (he even played flyhalf for part of primary school, for pete’s sake ;-) ), now all that is necessary is some game time to prove to the general public what the coaching staff already know.
