27-year-old Stormers prop Schalk Ferreira, who gave up on the game two years ago after a serious neck injury, has been cleared to return to rugby.
The 111 kg prop, who was routinely used all over the front row a few years back, with varying degrees of success, will now apparently be looked at only as a loosehead, according to Stormers coach Alister Coetzee, who confirmed that Ferreira was back in training with the squad. Ferreira accumulated 45 WP caps and 14 Stormers appearances before his retirement in 2009.
Meanwhile, former Sharks prop Deon Carstens has yet to arrive in Cape Town – he’s joining the Stormers from UK club Saracens.

ok… let me be the first to ask… Stormers? SERIOUSLY?
Is Carstens a loan deal or permanent? And to be honest i dont remember this oke Ferreira…he must have gone backwards like the rest of his tight 5 two years ago.
@SheldonK (Comment 2) : I’ll tell you one thing for sure… there are DEFINITELY club props in Durban who are better than this guy
@robdylan (Comment 3) : Hahaha i hope u talking about Ferreira not Carstens? I thought when the Sharks gave him the big send off he said he was going to play overseas to end his career?
@SheldonK (Comment 2) : Carstens deal is permanent… 2 years, I think
@SheldonK (Comment 4) : yes, I meant Ferreira… Speen is an awesome prop.
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Schalk Ferreira is Rassies lovechild.He seriously sees something nobody else does, yes he is an absolute warrior in the gym but then again so is Pierre Spies.
And Stormers have enough loosheads.Get a tighthead.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 9) : all the stormers heads are loose you ment
@robdylan (Comment 5) : Is there a gold mine under newlands we dont know about? Cos he must be getting a fair amount and add that to what Habana,DeVilliers,Fourie,Burger are getting…
@SheldonK (Comment 11) : The DHL deal wasn’t exactly similar to what Toyota gave the Cheetahs.
I dont know this Ferreira oke either
But then again he doesnt sound ‘worth knowing’
Suppose he was the lesser Schalk. Burger, Brits, Ferreira.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 12) : I suppose u hav gotta get sum cash to have that yellow mess on the jersey
What a pleasant change to read the words “comes out of retirement” and not have it associated with the Sharks
@Culling Song (Comment 16) : The guy is 27…Sharks wont have a look at him for another 5years at least
Ferreira doesn’t really have that typical “I’m a frontrow player” build.
He looks like a prop that’s taken too many spinning classes at the gym and stayed away from carbohydrates.
@SheldonK (Comment 17) : On fire today
@beet (Comment 18) : he’s the dude with the crazy pitch-black 80s hair, right?
@beet (Comment 18) : Yeah – closest guy I can compare him to build-wise is Chadwick… difference being Chadwick is a monster in the scrums, whereas Ferreira is, to be kind, not a monster in the scrums.
@robdylan (Comment 21) : Ja but Dale has that unmistakable frontrow look about him coupled with a just begging someone to knock the ball on type attitude. Old Schalk’s body language has “ref please call advantage over so that we don’t have to scrum!” written all over it.
He sort of reminds me of the old Brumbies prop Nic Henderson in terms of build.
Expecting Ginga Kitshoff and Malherbe to be our front run fatties in 2012.
@beet (Comment 22) : Beet you lot havent been nice in that Kearsney Festival 2012. Playing Grey Bloem, Affies and Selbourne in 5 days is going to be a epic battle for Paarl Gym.
@robdylan (Comment 21) :
@PaarlBok (Comment 24) : But Oom when you play in the Western Cape Premier Division and have fixtures vs Outeniqua, Oakdale and Drostdy as well as Wildeklawer thrown in, it’s a tough season every season for Gimmies.
Is your laatjie still a 100% hockey man or is there a bit of hope for rugby in his future?
@beet (Comment 26) : Nah Hokkie Boet, he play cricket aswell. He plays from Dec11-17 for Boland Indoors in the PSi Indoor Nationals.
To small for rugby and will next year stop cricket aswell. Once they get to U14 (High School) they have to specialise.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 25) : Hello Kleitie! Goed om jou te sien!
@beet (Comment 26) : Boet Grey Bloem & Affies is something totally different to what Drosdy Donkeys can compare to. Usually we play Grey Bloem at Wilde Klawer and would have like to see our lot play some of the top Natal sides.
Schalk Ferreira was hond kak before his injury, I don’t expect him to be much better now.
@Loosehead (Comment 30) : Well he is well rested now so he might be better…
@PaarlBok (Comment 28) : Howsit Jan. Keep well bud.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 32) : Ja Bru, summer arrived!
@PaarlBok (Comment 33) : I thought it was always summer in Paarl
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 34) :
Bit unfair some of these comments.
I remember him being a star and captaining SA U-19 to the World Champs (a long time ago now though), before constant injuries made it difficult for him.
I’m not expecting much, but you can’t ever have enough props, can you?
