Schoolboy flyhalf training with Stormers

News from the Stormers camp is that 18-year-old SA Schools flyhalf Timothy Swiel has been included in their provisional Super Rugby training squad.

Swiel, a pupil of Bishops, looks set to increase the depth available to Stormers coach Alister Coetzee, who struggled during last year’s Super Rugby competition due to an unprecedented flyhalf injury list. First-choice Peter Grant will only return from Japan a good way into the season, with understudies Demetri Catrikilis, Kurt Coleman and Gary van Aswegen all still quite young themselves. While Swiel has probably been included at this stage more so the coaches can have a look at him than because he is seriously part of the plans, he may well be closer to playing than many realise.

As reported a few days back, out-of-contract Lions pivot Burton Francis is also training with the Stormers and may be offered a deal there if he impresses the coaching staff.

  • Some people may think he is very young but with the conditioning of school boys these days the gap between school boy rugby and seniors is getting closer and closer, in terms of players conditioning. Also i am a big fan of giving an identified youngster or 2 the chance to see what its like playing with the big boys to show them the level they need to be at if they want to play there. So yes he may not even be around come January…but this experience is very beneficial!

  • Glad to see them looking to the youngsters. He shared the 10 WP Craven Week jersey with Handre Pollard so expect the same thing next year.

Even marnitz bshoff said those two were destined for higher honours.

Peter Grant is only 27! The school boys can wait i think…there are “youngsters” that are there with a lot more experience. (im just using WP as an example here but same goes with Sharks,Bulls etc)

I was just using it as an example of people always saying this guy or that guy is the next best thing and they should look at him…well what about the guys that were the next big thing last year or 2 years ago? Just seems that as soon as a guy turns 21 in this country we now have to look for someone younger to take over.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 32) :

Not sure if Gary was ever considered the ‘next big thing’. Only the next in line with potential. But Gary has also been included, so it’s not like they’re discarding him.

Catrakilis on the other hand I doubt will ever be a long-term option for WP/Stormers.

I really like that they’ve included him in the training squad. Show him what it’s like… get him settled in, and maybe by the time the CC comes around we’ll have ourselves a star flyhalf of our own – or one for ‘the future’.

Up till now every other SA team has a young guy who can be considered to have a heck of a lot of potential.

    - Bulls have Lionel Cronje (who can still be damn good if he gets his head right).
    - Cheetahs have Johan Goosen & Sias Ebersohn.
    - Lions have Elton Jantjies.
    - Sharks have Patrick Lambie.
    - Stormers… Timo Swiel?

Besides, why can Australia bring guys into their teams while still at school (Beale, O’Connor, Pocock etc.), but when a SA side does it, they are criticized?

Well done AC on knowing what you want in that 10 jersey, and looking for it.

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 31) : if I was Dawie Theron one of the experiments I’d be looking to conduct at a training camp is Leyds at fullback. He has a wonderful appreciation for finding ways to get in behind the D and playing general attacking rugby. At 15 he might just have the room to become a Kurtley Beale type player. I think his physique makes him stand out as a potential weakness on D and I’m not sure if his kicking out of hand is of a high enough standard to merit fast tracking.

Also, Swiel looks pretty big for a flyhalf so conditioning shouldn’t be too much of a problem. I’d have thought Leyds would get a shot, but can’t blame them for being hesitant with someone under 1.8m & lighter then Gio Aplon.

    Interesting note from Stormers website:
“The youngsters continue to push hard with the Kitshoff’s posting very respectable 180kg bench presses”

A good start for any WP prop I’d say! Hopefully having Carstens around will be the perfect remedy to turn him into the stand-out WP need at prop.

There are a few who take it a bit far, yes.

I’ve also read stuff saying Elstadt should replace Smith. I’d hardly call him overrated though (unless you take those peoples opinions seriously)! Had a hell of a good SR tournament. 14 line-out steals for a former flanker & forgot about the flashy stuff, being huge on the defensive side of the ball! If he has another season like in 2011, he can’t be far off Springbok selection – partly due to our lack of quality 4 locks.

Calling Herbst & Chadwick years ahead of Kitshoff is biased as well bud. Kitshoff has impressed while playing, same as those two.

Province will get there. It’s only a matter of time  I’m thinking 2013 Currie Cup they’ll have hit their stride, but hey it could be next year.

    2002 – 2011 Super Rugby between Stormers & Sharks:
    - 2002: Stormers win 25 – 18.
    - 2003: Stormers win 40 – 18.
    - 2004: Stormers in 31 – 24.
    - 2005: Stormers win 26 – 12.
    - 2006: Sharks win 24 – 17.
    - 2007: Sharks win 36 – 10.
    - 2008: Sharks win 12 – 10.
    - 2009: Sharks win 20 – 15.
    - 2010: Sharks win 20 – 14.
    - 2011: Stormers win 32 – 12. Stormers win 16 – 6.

Pretty even, with the Sharks having a good 5-year run (starting with the arrival of Puke in Cape Town).

Stormers still win 6 to 5 though

Would grind him into the dirt? And you know that how?

You seem intent on seeing any WP prop as a complete failure. As if there’s just something in the water that makes WP props weak. Nothing to do with his performance, otherwise you’d give him a chance.

    - Bakkies & Danie are done. No more Bok caps there.
    - I’d agree he’s behind Flip, but if Flip has another season like 2011, he’ll have a hard time staying ahead.
    - I’d also agree that he’s behind Mostert, but with Mostert going overseas he won’t be playing for the Springboks, that’s almost guaranteed.

So you’re left with Flip van der Merwe & Rynhardt Elstadt.
