All I want for Christmas…

What’s that sound I hear? Sleigh bells? Somebody creeping down the chimney with a “ho ho ho”? Fat men in red suits handing out expensive gifts to complete strangers? Time to get that old Christmas list done, I reckon!

So what do we, as Sharks fans, want good old FC to cram into our stocking this year? Being as fanatical as we are about things, I’m pretty sure that anything which benefits the Sharks and may help turn them into a championship-winning outfit in 2012 must feature pretty highly on the list. Let’s have a look at at the ten things want most from the jolly old fat fellow ahead of next year, in no particular order.

1. A monster number 4. We don’t need to buy one, of course, because we’ve bought lots of guys in the past and they haven’t lasted. We do, though, have a huge number of very talented young men in our ranks ready to step up and show they are ready to take on the role of enforcer in the pack.
2. Quality options at outside centre. There’s potentially enough man-power there now, with Joubert, Whitehead, Jordaan, Mjekevu, Ludik, Pietersen and maybe even Ndungane all potential candidates for the troublesome jersey. We need each of them to raise their game and provide the coach with the “nice problem” of who to leave out, rather than who to select.
3. A sprinkling of magic “fetching powder”. We’re lacking an out-and-out fetcher in the pack and have at time been exposed by this. We need all our forwards, particularly the loosies, as well as our centres to develop or improve this aspect in order to ensure more turnover ball.
4. Better discipline. The Sharks, both individually and as a team, were far too prone to “brain farts” in 2011, with indiscipline leading to penalties and yellow cards. We need to all be on our best behaviour in 2012.
5. Improved ball protection. Technique at the breakdown was lacking all year. The Sharks have more than enough manpower to ensure that NO ball is ever lost – in 2012, we need to ensure that the execution is spot on.
6. Form at scrumhalf. Both Charl McLeod and Conrad Hoffmann have struggled this year to discover really consistent form. Let’s hope they can both be on song in 2012, with Cobus Reinach also pushing them hard all the way.
7. A spirit of adventure. This one is for the coaches – let’s not be afraid to try something, whether it’s giving Pieter-Steph du Toit a shot, letting Paul Jordaan show just how good he is or maybe even seeing whether Tera Mthembu could be the next Bob Skinstad. The spirit of adventure has deserted us and it would be great to get that back in 2012.
8. More pace. Wouldn’t it be great if every member of the Sharks team, but particularly the backs, could be blessed with just a little more top end next season?
9. A dash of unpredictability. Far too often, our opponents have known exactly what we’re going to do every time we get the ball. Let’s mix it up a little bit in 2012 and leave them guessing. We have the team to play many different games – why always stick to one?
10. A captain. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, as the saying goes. Which of our men will stand up in 2012 and take on the mantle of captaincy?

Merry Christmas, Sharks… let’s hope everyone’s stocking are overflowing with happiness, health, good fortune and great form for the new season.

  • Tera Mtembu wish, really doubt that will happen with all the quality at looseforward. For me he is probably our 6th choice number 8…so never gonna happen. I see him going down a similar road that Mark Richards has gone through.

My order 4 8; Alberts, Marcell, Kanko, Keegan, Deysel, Kleinhans and then Tera.

  • How about replacing Rudolf with Dick Muir, and changing the coaching structures. A new backline coach. Introducing a team psychologist. Playing the England game in Moses Mabida as trial or any other important game there, better price structures for tickets ( students/pensioners/alcohol-free family seats). Better marketing of the game in the Durban area. Getting more schools to play the game. Donating 3000 tickets or so to rugby playing kids. Getting a varsity cup team that includes Varsity College players and UKZN ones which is based in durban and is strong enough.

  • My short term wish is to keep Deysel at 4 and to play Coetzee at 8 and Alberts 7. Also Fred to be our 9 for superugby, Kockett to come back to Durban and Lambie to play 10 and only 10. Skeate for Captain, Jordaan to get a run, and Sharks coaching staff to be more open to experiment, eg. Viljoen at 12 for instance and Coetzee at 6.

    Long Term- Sign Heinrich Brussouw.

    @Original Pierre (Comment 28) :
Eddie Jones may just have the innovative mindset culpably lacking at the Sharks right now; same with Brendan Venter (though he hasn’t yet made his bones in Super rugby).

Sean Everitt has a good reputation, but the lack of trophies or consistency of performance under him concerns me – inconsistency is often a coaching issue.

I guess the main thing for me is that our current brains trust is in a rut – any change will help. We still have a very strong squad – but the coaches have seldom got the best out of it.

  • A penny for my thoughts, although I dont have an answer for every point.
    1. Continue to play Deysel at 4 and tell him to copy Brad Thorn.
    2. Only options are Whitehead, Jordaan and Mjekevu.
All other option fall foul of point 8. Pietersen?? Oh dear.
3 Take the captaincy away from Daniel(i personally think he’s an average captain) and tell him to play more to the ball. Leave the ball carrying to Alberts, Bissie and Deysel.
    4. Nuff said
    5. Get Deysel and Bissie etc to hit more rucks. Sharks tight forwards are playing far too loose of late. Especially noticable in the CC semi and final.
    6. Mcleod will be fine, he’ll find his best form again once points 3 and 5 are sorted out.
    7. Cant add anything here, been saying it since the beginning of the CC.
    8. See point 2. Joubert and Ndungane out, Jordaan, Whitehead, Mjekevu etc…give them a go.
    9. Yes. ties in with points 2 and 8.
    10. Not too keen on Keegan. He seemed at a complete loss at times during the latter stages of the CC. Serious case of too many chiefs and not enough indians at crucial times. Problem is, I cant think of anyone else…Bismark?

As I said, just my thoughts. One can only wish.

  • Brendan Venter might have a few thoughts on defence that could help the Sharks..?
Good,or rather excellent (since this is the Sharks and excellence should be the only goal),defence can create turn-over situations and opportunities to run at disorganised defences.
Our “fetcher”should be aggressive defence and pressure at the breakdown.

Plumtree is dumb enough to keep trying the same thing over and over when it doesn’t work. Doesn’t learn from his mistakes.

Not to mention the lack of defence at both the Lions and Boks :( until Nienaber went to assist. But don’t get me wrong I would love to see Muir in Rudi’s post, contracting and finding the YOUNG talent.

Let’s just put this one to bed… the original suggestion was that the Sharks should buy him. Given the rich seam of hookers we have within our own ranks, that has to count as possibly one of the stupidest suggestions I’ve ever heard on this site (and they’re often not in short supply). I don’t particularly care whether anyone rates him higher or lower than any of the incumbent hookers for any other franchise = or even wants him to walk straight into the Bok side. Reality is, the Sharks neither want nor need Strauss or any other hooker and I would urge you to use EXTREME caution when accusing me of being ignorant about Sharks rugby.

  • Yes, a mightily unattractive quality, but I fail to see where I have come across as arrogant?

I agree full heartedly that the Sharks don’t need Strauss, but my gripe(s) are as follows:

Strauss does not play in the national Irish league(s), he plays in the Rabo Pro 12/ Celtic League. The former is a semi-pro league, the latter a SupeRugby style comp with Wales, Scotland and recently Italy.

To call it three ‘levels’ below SupeRugby is an arrogant IMHO. What constitutes a level? If going by popular consensus that the Currie Cup is a level down from SupeRugby, and the Vodacom Cup further down below that, surely it is fair that I call the notion of the Pro 12, Aviva Premiership and Top 14 being even a further level/ the same level as that ludicirous?

For what its worth though, I certainly believe that NH rugby is a few notches (note the careful overlooking of the word “levels”) down from SH rugby. Every possible indicator bears this up.

  • Well it’s hard not to take it seriously when many do believe it.

Make no bones about it, SupeRugby has a higher conecentartion of quality players, and is played at a higher tempo and thus is of greater standard. I doubt few regular watchers of both would argue that.

However ;) , I’m afraid now I must ask what these indicators are that you refer to, because if one of these indicators is the performance of players that have played on both sides of the equator, well then there are examples of SH players excelling, as well as stars failing in NH leagues. Keeping in mind I agree that the domestic leagues standards are lower than SupeRugby’s.

Its late and I’m too tired to give your question the attention it deserves, but I consider the following as indicators (the first of which is arguably the most compelling):
The fortunes of the NH and SH teams versus each other
The dearth of NH players who are able to shine in SH rugby
The huge number of SH has-beens who excel in NH rugby
The late retirement age of players in NH rugby
The difficulty that returning SH players have once they come back from the North
The comments of coaches who receive players from a NH team (even returning SH players)
The comments of players who have played in both NH and SH.

  • Remembering that Leinster are Heineken Cup champions… not merely competitors.

The Heineken Cup is at the very least somewhere between CC and SR. A lot closer to Super Rugby as well.

Wasn’t that long ago that a Springbok mid-week side got a good hiding in England as well, or Munster ran the All Blacks very close.

Super Rugby is demanding because of the schedule which asks a lot to perform over an extended period of time, something the Waratahs have never managed despite being right up there at times.

But European Rugby isn’t nearly as weak as it’s sometimes portrayed… and those that do well there can only play as well as the opposition allow them to. Can’t ask any more of guys who are already being talked about as being the best in their position in that league.

He is still a good player. If I were Allister Coetzee or John Mitchell shopping for a hooker I’d definitely be signing him (Strauss) up ahead of either Burden or Cooper. Strauss was playing excellent rugby for the Cheetahs as well before leaving… it wasn’t a case of him not being good enough to succeed in SA.

He just wanted to play test rugby, and as he wasn’t getting time ahead of his cousin he decided on Ireland.

I find the suggestion to sign Ronnie Cooke more  then that of Strauss.

I can’t help but believe that the size of NH Club rugby dilutes a bit of the system’s quality.

Many games = bigger squads = more fringe players required = more older players involved + more sub-standard players given chances.

If the top tier league sizes in Eng and Fra were reduced to say a max of 6 clubs with 3-4 teams in the other 4 nations, the overall quality would surely pick up as a result of more strength vs strength matchups.

Altho Ireland has 4 well recognized teams, the bulk of their power seems to be concentrated in 2 sides, Leinster and Munster and this is contributing factor to these 2 teams’ success in the HC.

The ongoing club vs country battle is also hurting the national teams.

But I agree, NH rugby is not nearly as weak as believed.

  • @robdylan: comment85: well I thought the arti was all about what the individual blogger would like to order for the sharks team from santa..
But okay, since you said you don’t believe we need him and talk about the “rich seam of hookers” the sharks have, I will counter that by saying I believe he is better,we do need him and that the drop-off from bissie to second in current sharks squad is huge..as for third choice: hasn’t even played a sr game yet.
Richardt is a determined player, with explosive strenght to go with his tireless energy and upper body strenght.hour also has a low-centre of gravity (1.74m) and dosnt shirk away from competing for possesion at the breakdown ( he was n sa schools and sa u19 flanker).
Now if we substitute bissie with richardt after 50/60mins of rugby, you get a player who can really add something there at the breakdowns in the final half hour/20 mins (neither of the two below bissie in current squad have shown them capable of doing this).
As for rotation,I’d happily select richardt ahead of the other two hookers .because I believe he is better.
Now I know this isn’t going to happen ( richardt stating he wants to play test rugby),but the article was about what the blogger would like from santa…

  • I’ve always enjoyed Richardt Strauss’ energy on the field. He’s an exciting player to watch. I don’t think I’d go out of my way to get him coz there is so little to choice between him and Burden. Like Burden, Kyle Cooper is a 100% homegrown talent. He has a style very similar to that of Strauss. Cooper has shown a lot of promise over the years, so I’d back him as well in the hopes that he’ll develop into an better player than Strauss.

I also get a little worried when I see a player start to lose most of his hair in his early 20s like Richardt did. I begin to think that maybe the stand out performances have been achieved with a bit of illegal help and the hair loss is the tell-tale side effect. It could be hereditary tho.

  • Actually think they should give az alkmaar the win to punish ajax.to ensure this doesn’t occur again.but just make certain the fan is really an ajax fan.
Some games at ajax with no fans allowed ( the empty stadium ) on top of losing points for the game -which it was said they were leading.
If the az alkmaar was provoking the ajax fans, then he should be punished as well ( suspension).

Bad investment because it makes no sense signing up another hooker, especially one who’s already well into his 20′s, when you’ve put so much time into Burden & Cooper already.

Signing up another player just means paying another player. If there’s one thing SA sides do terribly, it’s not holding to a roster. Just sign left, right & centre… you never know how many players will be contracted and so forth.

Having 4 hookers all for one position would make no sense… in other words a bad investment.
