Details are sparse at this stage, but it appears as though former WP centre Morgan Newman is still looking for a new rugby home, after a trial spell with the Sharks Vodacom Cup side appears to have come to naught.
The likeable Newman, who has struggled to find a regular gig since leaving Province a few seasons back, was considered one of the up-and-coming midfield stars in Cape Town when he first appeared on the scene. He was invited to train with the Sharks XV squad when they convened at the end of last year and our understanding was that the initial signs were positive, with the player set to return to Durban after the Christmas break to thrash out a deal.
All of that now seems to have fallen through. Our information is that Newman is still in Cape Town and trying to find somewhere else to play his rugby in 2012 – we’d like to wish him well in his future endeavours and truly hope that he finds a decent gig soon.
The signs are better for former Lions back Wandile Mjekevu. “Jakes” seems to have impressed the Sharks coaching staff and now looks to be very much part of the squad, although it’s not currently clear whether he has officially been contracted. In a reasonably bizarre twist, Mjekevu’s arrival in Durban sees him reunited with KES classmate and fellow centre Jared Meyer, who played for the Sharks under 21s last year.

Morning Sir Rob Dylan
Wandile and Jarryd were the talk of the town in 2008 pure class at craven week.
We did not see eye to eye concerning Piet Lindeque
BUT i hope this year he steps up.
Very excited about rising star Paul Jordaan he will rattle afew feathers this year.
Hi Rob, do you have a list of the current sharks training group?
Good to hear that mjekevu is still in the training squad .

@robdylan (Comment 4) :
Not a bad squad. With some decent, creative coaching this team could do very well.
@Megatron (Comment 5) : I’m trying to figure out what’s going on in your new avatar. Could you elaborate?
@robdylan (Comment 4) :
I’m glad that du Toit is in amongst the locks there. I hope he stays in the SuperSquad.
@vanmartin (Comment 7) : at the Sevens, these okes were dressed as “Bryce Lawrences” and had blue eyes and bloodied bandages after being moered by Bok supporters on their arrival in SA
@Megatron (Comment 9) :
@Megatron (Comment 9) :
@robdylan (Comment 4) : Thanks Rob!
I cant wait for the rugga to start
@Megatron (Comment 9) :
@robdylan (Comment 4) : Rob, I’m striking a blank, and am probably going to wind up looking like a fool, but who’s the Du Toit you have in your list of forwards?
@Culling Song (Comment 15) : Never mind, just figured out it’s Beet’s favoirite – Pieter-Steph
Huge Mistake of course.
Compared to our other options Morgan Newman should`ve walked straight into the side.
@Original Pierre (Comment 17) : LIKE!!!
Now for some decent coaches!
@Original Pierre (Comment 17) : would have liked seeing hi in the black and white is he a 12 or a 13
I’m not surprised to see Newman without a gig. If he couldn’t cut it at the Cheetahs where centres have been in short supply, it was hard to see him leapfrogging some of the juniors we have on the books.
It must really be frustrating for Newman to have been a youngster on the verge of Bok selection and staring a promising future in the face, only to have injury put something he could almost touch back then, a lightyear of distance away now
