Strauss confirmed as Lions Super-captain

Lions Super Rugby coach John Mitchell has confirmed that loose forward Joshua Strauss will captain his side during the upcoming Southern Hemisphere tournament.

Last year’s Lions side was lead by utility forward Franco van der Merwe, with occasional backup from centre Doppies la Grange, but critics will argue that it was not until Strauss was handed the reigns for the Currie Cup season that the side really started to gel as a unit and look like they were playing for each other. Strauss’s leadership-by-example seems to set a clear benchmark for the other players to follow and the fact that they won a first Currie Cup trophy in 12 years in his first campaign as captain made him pretty much a shoo-in for the position.

La Grange will again serve as the official vice-captain, whilst others in the group, including van der Merwe, former captain Baywatch Grobbelaar, prop JC van Rensburg and flyhalf Butch James will offer further support as senior players.

Mitchell apparently feels comfortable that he has sufficient depth in the squad to be competitive in Super Rugby this year, with only scrumhalf an area of concern. Having lost both Rory Kockott and Jano Vermaak to other teams, the Lions will enter Super Rugby with the untried trio of Mike Bondesio, Ross Cronje and Whestley Moolman fighting for possession of the number 9 jersey.

  • Strauss deserves this appointment, but it was pretty much expected.

Make it happen against those foreign teams Josh, we need all five teams to be competitive this year!

There isn’t really another option, with Doppies seemingly more injury prone every season..

For one thing we seem to be keeping our main players atm . So there is hope .

i think the Sharks should be on top of the SA teams though . the other 4 teams will IMHO be an open race .

but thats just me and i suck at super bru predictions so wont read to much into that

  • @Zibbie (Comment 12) : You never know. I am just hoping that the Lions class of 2011 buck the trend of winning the CC and bombing in SupeRugby.

my feeling that if we where to miraculously stay injury free we might be there or there about . Injuries should test the side . will be a long season . Dont think we will end stone last though .

  • Great choice as captain. The team is happy with him and a happy team is a winning team (just so long as they don’t beat the Sharks ;-) )

  • @Zibbie (Comment 11) : @JarsonX (Comment 17) : Correction; the Sharks WERE in the finaly, they certainly did not PLAY in the final. All the playing was done by the Lions, sad to say…

I wouldn’t read too much into any supporters predictions at the moment. I have a feeling that anyone of the five franchises have the ability to surprise us this season. Very vague statement I know but ‘easy wins’ just can’t be taken for granted for any of the franchises.

  • Good decision, he’s an inspirational captain and will fire up the rest of the players. I’m tipping the Lions to be one of the surprise packages of the competition. I’m not saying they will top the SA conference or be near the top of Super 15 but i reckon they are going to be a tough team to play against.
The foundations have been laid in the CC, and the Lions will look far more cohesive. I think they have a lot more depth as well, so im really excited at seeing what they can do.

  • @Pat (Comment 24) : Lions could make it to about 6th.

If the Sharks do something about their mid-field we might be in with a shout as well, if not . .. probably around 8th or 9th.

    @Pat (Comment 24) :

The lions need to learn to close out the close games . Like the game against the Sharks in SR 2011.

I must admit for the first time in a while im nervous about SR . I think the Lions have a chance .. hehe

  • @Zibbie (Comment 26) :

I agree, they came to close to winning a lot of their games in Superrugby 2011 but didnt have the nous to finish any team off. I think that will change. They have a lot more experience now, and will have a full pre season with the core of the team that will player Superrugby. I think they will be very competitive.
