It has been reported that after months of speculation, Gert Smal will remain part of the Irish Management and will not be returning to South Africa.

According to Irish Times, Smal, who was widely accepted as the favourite to take over the Bok Coach Job from Pdivvy, will see out the remainder of his contract as forwards coach. His contract expires at the end of 2012/13 season.

SARU’s 12-man excecutive council will meet On 26 January to finalise the selection process, before their recommendation is expected to be ratified by SARU’s Special General Council meeting 24 hours later, report News24.com.

In further media speculation, it was said that SARU could spring a massive surprise and retain Peter de Villiers as caretaker coach for the upcoming Three-Test series against England…

Who said rugby is not interesting??

  • however gets the job may be able to do what Jake did 8 years ago. Golden oldies moved to deserved retirement and new promising players and quite a bit of experience in the team as well.

  • Why can’t SARU just buy Smal out of his contract if they want him so badly.

And if Smal had ambitions of applying for the Bok job, he should have had this buy-out clause included in his contract extension agreement.

  • @lostfish (Comment 16) : But still. If you’re reasonably certain that the Bok job is going to be up for grabs and you have one eye on it, surely you don’t want to put a patch over that same eye.

This isn’t an unusual scenario in European football and rugby structures over there tend to follow along football lines. Club needs new manager, potential new manager contractually bound to another club but with contract buy-out clause, option exercised, manager free to enter new contract with new club. It usually happens to players but same thing applies to managers/coaches

  • I think everyone is reading far too much into a newspaper story that didn’t really say much of anything.
