Intense competition for starting spots

Sharks skipper Keegan Daniel has revealed that there’s been a bit of a bun fight going on within the Sharks squad when it comes to deciding on the best possible starting line up.

In this instance, though, it’s not rugby skills that are the benchmark; the Sharks play the Dolphins in a unique Pro20 cricket match at neighbouring Kingsmead on Sunday billed as the Pick n Pay Durban Challenge Clash of Kings. Daniel’s first real challenge, now that he has been confirmed as squad captain for the season, is to assemble a capable 11 cricketers out of a bunch of guys for whom bats and pads are generally things that were last used many years ago.

With a fair few tall tales doing the round, the captain needs to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. In a press conference yesterday, Daniel admitted that “the problem is that we don’t know how honest the boys are being! Some are saying they played 1st XI at school for four years, but I don’t know if they’ve even caught a cricket ball at all!” Sharks fans can rest assured, though, that while the rugby boys will definitely be up against it on Sunday, in guys like Pat Lambie and Charl McLeod there are, at least, a few who have genuine cricketing pedigrees, even if these are now somewhat out-of-date!

While Daniel was reasonably tight-lipped as to the exact composition of the side, he did confirm that a few of the younger players, such as Cobus Reinach, Paul Jordaan and Tim Whitehead would be in the mix. You can view the full interview on YouTube below:
