SA rugby world tying itself in knots

I’ve tried to sit back a little over the last few days and watch (and chuckle) as the local rugby media, both professional and amateur, has whipped itself into a right froth about the upcoming Bok coaching appointment.

The timeline is far too confused to recount here, but it pretty much started with Gert Smal answering a pretty straight question in a very diplomatic way, leading to intense speculation all over the show that he had in the process ruled himself out of the Bok job. The rumour mill, fuelled by the usual twitterazzi suspects, proceeded to write Heyneke Meyer into the job, before then convincing themselves that Peter de Villiers would be retained in an interim capacity, before finally backtracking to the point that Smal was again the favourite. All-in-all, lots of activity, lots of banter, but very little to go on at the end of the day.

All was finally starting to simmer down when “captiongate” broke yesterday, with SARU seemingly forced into damage control mode after somebody at Gallo Images appeared to let the cat out of the bag relating to Rassie Erasmus’s future in the local game. All just a wardrobe malfunction, apparently – Rassie hasn’t been officially appointed to any position with the Boks (it would be strange to appoint a technical adviser to an as-yet-unknown coach) – but that didn’t stop a day filled with hilarity as the non-event was again dissected in minute detail all over the internet.

Oh – apparently Alister Coetzee then decided to wade into the debate by again declaring himself unavailable. Clearly slow on the uptake, is our Toetie… mate, no-one is considering you for the job anyway, but it’s good to know you’re getting your excuses for why you didn’t get it lined up early enough!

I think we all need to settle down a little here. SA Rugby will make an announcement next Friday. I’m told that they really haven’t made a decision yet – worrying as that may be – making it quite unlikely that anyone, either within or outside of that organisation actually knows anything at this point. All will become clear on the intended date and this obsession with wanting to “scoop” the official announcement just to try and eke out a little bit more credibility honestly starts to look a little silly.

Another thing to bear in mind is that any appointment involving individuals who currently have other jobs (and all the best ones do) is always going to be a sensitive matter. Nobody is ever going to openly admit to a journalist that they are in the running for a new job, as that would seriously jeopardise their current one. It’s common sense, people – you don’t say stuff in the press that’s going to get you fired and being economical with the truth when faced with a baying journalist is hardly a new tactic. Don’t read too much into news reports relating to who is and isn’t in the running for job, in other words.

im just hoping they boys will show improvement . i think they have grown a lot since the last SR season . Had a few close games . Hopefully they learned how to close out those games .

i feel the Sharks should be the best SA team . Good Dept . great experience . The other 4 teams might be close . Cheetahs might also do well although they also lost a few players like Super Sarel and Viljoen .

The Lions Dept will most definably be tested . Hopefully Ross cronje can step up at scrummy .

i dont know . i think the Lions developed a mental softness . ‘its ok ,we will do better next time ‘ . i think Mitch is trying to stamp that out . no more 5 year plans ect ect .

The players that are there should want to win the Cup now . not in 5 years . and i blieve thats a good thing .

As long as Mitch has players buying into his plan we will be ok ;)
