Baby Boks pip Ikeys at the death

South African under 20 coach Dawie Theron was smiling on Saturday evening after watching his charges dig deep to record a 31-29 win over Varsity Cup champions, the Ikey Tigers in their first warm-up game.

Theron’s side started well, racing out to a 14-0 lead as a dominant pack performance saw impressive centre William Small-Smith and lock Paul Willemse score tries. Both were converted by flyhalf Tony Jantjies, but Ikeys duly hit back with a score of their own to trail by just 7 at the 20-minute water break. Ikeys scored again before half time, seeing the Babk Boks hold a slender 14-12 lead at the break.

A third try to the juniors, courtesy of lock Ruan Botha, took the score out to 21-12, after which some alarming defensive lapses saw Ikeys very nearly steal victory. The hosts ran in three quick scores, only one of which was converted, to lead 29-21 until just a minute before the end, when monstrous replacement lock Jacques du Plessis barged over to equal the scores. Provincial team-mate Jantjies was cool as ice as he stroked the conversion that gave his team a 2-point win.

Speaking the the SA Rugby website after the match, Theron said that “yhere were numerous positives to take out of this game. We gave most of the players in our training squad some time on the field and I’m really satisfied with the way our structures came off in the match.

“I’m also happy with the result, mainly because we had to dig deep towards the end. To do that, after a week where we trained extremely hard in very hot weather in Stellenbosch, is pleasing. We’re on the right track, but there is still a lot of work to be done.”

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) :

They really should make this team an official Vodacom Cup team, so they can play together more often and gel together as a unit.

Problem is that the unions would never allow it, as they would want these players in their own Vodacom Cup teams.

  • Don’t you think these youngsters might also be a little adverse to packing up shop for a couple of months? I know I would be a little upset if they asked me to leave the East Coast for some dusty old plaas in Gauteng, or even worse… Cape Town

  • Well done to the u20 team.

I agree with Richard that the boys need to be playing together more regularly against structured teams (not invitation sides)

The idea of them playing in the Vodacom Cup isn’t a new one. I just don’t see how a team of players most of whom haven’t played above u19 level can be expected to compete and benefit from playing against the reserve teams of some of the bigger Unions or the likes of the Griquas, Pumas and Kings.

By all means give our u20s challenges that will help them to improve their game and come closer as a team but make sure it’s reasonable competition they’re matched against and not a hiding to nothing.

  • The idea of the Baby Boks being an addition to the Vodacom Cup is not a bad idea, but the unions use the Vodacom Cup as a trial run and to bring the youngsters up to speed with team structures, for potential Currie Cup debutants later on in the year in the absence of Boks and also injuries

I hear what you are saying, and you make a valid point.

The ideal scenario would be to see them in the Currie Cup U19 competition, but that is just at the wrong end of the year.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : Not many of these guys will play regularly for their Vodacom Cup sides but as beet said competing against S15 b sides especially up front will be a bit much for a team of U20′s.
I agree they need to play more against tougher opponents – VC inclusion is an interesting option.
At the very least they should play more warm up games against either the top Varsity Cup sides or the big unions U21 sides who are all training for a CC season that only begins in July.
Most of these guys will play in this competition later in the year but there are also a lot of boys at this level who are in their U21 year who could give them a good test.
We have underperformed at this level for years now for a whole lot of reasons – hopefully we will be better prepared this year on home turf.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : I’ve seen saying for a while that we need a proper u20 compo in SA for the 1st half of the year. This would at least give form players overlooked at trials held 7-8 months before the JWC, a fighting chance to win back a place in the team.

As things stand, Oom D has close to no chance at keeping proper tabs on how all the other u20 players not in his squad are performing. He might get to see a couple of guys here and there but an organised compo would afford him the op82T to see just able all of them.

At least the Varsity Cup u20 compo will address some of this.

@Richard Ferguson (Comment 8) : I think this would at least even out the playing fields a bit. But it wud sort of take something away from the Varsity Cup theme.

  • @beet (Comment 12) : I’ve never understood why we dont have an U20 inter provincial comp – even if it is run earlier in the year – if the WC is an U20 competition.
I’m not sure if the Varsity cup U20 comp will help much as i wonder how many contracted U19&20 players who are training in their provincial set ups will be allowed to play for their varsity in this competition.

Twitter was the motive but I’m thinking of going with op2T.

But ur right. Too old to be doing this kind of stuff. Someone needs to come up with the official dictionary. It’s nearly impossible for me to say anything meaningful on twitter with the 140 character restriction

  • @steve (Comment 13) : Thanks to Rob and Rich I got to sit press box last year.

Supersport proper were not at Kingspark that day – no live TV coverage, just live internet streaming I guess.

Really disappointing was to witness the u19 and u21 games being recorded on a standard handheld video recorder. The recording wasn’t great quality and the cameraman was at best an amateur.

I couldn’t believe that this one poor recording was going to serve as the video analysis material for the match. I wud have thought the Sharks would at least invest in decent equipment (a min of 2 cameras) and hire a pro to capture footage.

I imagine that this is all Dawie Theron would have to go on for the majority of Sharks u19 games if he bothered to request for the tapes.

I wonder what happens at other grounds when SS arent around.

Really poor in this day and age.

  • @beet (Comment 20) :

Are you referring to the old guy sitting in the second row?

That guy must have a steel arm, he sits through the entire game without so much as a shake.

But I agree, it is a shame that his little recording, which is then ordered by the visiting team and put onto dvd after the match, is the only evidence of the game happening.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 21) : Ja. He let me watch the tape of the Leopards u19 at halftime. He does a good job with what he’s got (not even a stand)but there were a few shakes and times when the picture wasn’t centred or in focus.

I just think things can be handled in a more pro way.
