Previously in Shark Wars: While braaiing at the final of Hotgrub Cup, Shark Lionchaser blacked out and had a vision in which he saw the future unfold for talented young Booter Tap Repus… Compelled to tell his hero what he’d been witness to, Lionchaser made his way into the Great Whites’ locker room where he and Repus had locked minds in a Boot-inspired temporal maelstrom, which revealed a shocking link between the two… Learn more now as the tale unfolds…

Darkness closed all around him as Shark Lionchaser hit the floor. He felt nothing but sensed everything. In the months that had passed since the temporal maelstrom which had held him and Tap Repus, the dazzlingly talented and youthful Great Whites’ No 10, in a mind-clinch par excellence, the blackouts had become a part of his life.

In them he saw the future, and felt the power of the Boot – the mystical energy force which governed all life and especially the game of rugby which Lionchaser loved so much. The Boot directed his life, “told” him where to channel his energy and how to mentor young Repus, his second cousin twice removed revealed to him in that feted maelstrom before the final of the 2011 Hotgrub Cup.

The vision began with a flash of light. Distant cheers became a deafening cacophany as the illumination took on the form of a packed Emperor’s Field Stadium. In the middle of the field a young man held a trophy aloft, bathed in a soft golden glow. His face appeared indistinct at first but there was no mistaking the number on his rugby shirt… A clear “10″. The fabled FantasticFifteen Trophy was in his hands. Tap Repus! It had to be…

Lionchaser came to with a start as the vision ended abrubtly, leaving only a slight feeling of nausea and a somewhat woolly head. What did it mean? Was Repus destined to pull on the hallowed Number 10 once more? With only a few short weeks before the start of the FantasticFifteen tournament and the rugby season rumours had abounded that Great Whites coach Odi Tum Seplummtriee was determined to play Tap back at 10, relegating Gaulstonean superstar Froth Froggle to the bench…

Repus was strong with the Boot. It flowed through him. But he had yet to master it properly, and the maelstrom back in October had cost the Great Whites the final against the Tarnished Tabbies, with Repus’s main contender for the Saffrika All Stars’ No 10 shirt – Beltum Tramcheese – vanquishing him in the process. Tramcheese was the apprentice of the evil Dark Master of the Boot, Daft Mornay Stain and had been taken over to the dark side of the Boot in the process…

Lionchaser’s head whirled as he made his way through the streets of Nabrud, a lush tropical paradise on the shores of the Deep Ocean, to Emperor’s Field stadium which soared impressively above the city, its concrete ramparts echoing with the historic victories of years gone by. He had to talk to Seplummtriee and his assistant coaches, Huge Head-Forwards and Graaff Bustforth. But more than anything he had to speak to Repus…

Tap Repus, at only 21, had already conquered the rugby world in considerable style with a daring talent that international coaches could usually only dream of. Today, more than any, surrounded by his Great White colleagues on the emerald green of Emperor’s Field, he felt the power of the Boot surge within him, filling his veins with energy, whispering in his ears of glories yet to pass.

Training didn’t usually elicit such a strong Boot reaction in Repus. Something had imperceptibly changed, and he somehow knew that his mentor, Shark Lionchaser, was at the root of this change. He felt different, somehow. Empowered. Invigorated. Masterful, even. He had learned how to channel the energy of the Boot and felt a strange calm settle over him – the calm of invincibility and ultimate knowledge. Repus felt unbeatable. And completely at peace.

So when Seplummtriee, Head-Forwards and Bustforth burst onto the field with Lionchaser, far from feeling perplexed, the young flyhalf felt the approach of his destiny… as if the future were coming for him right now. His coaches and his mentor quickly formed a loose circle around him as Lionchaser spoke… “Tap. I’ve had another vision, but this one is the strongest I’ve had yet. It was… intoxicating… a revelation like no other. In it I saw the Whites lift the FantasticFifteen trophy. More than that… I saw YOU lifting the trophy…”

“I know,” said Repus. “Somehow I’ve always known. Perhaps it’s the Mini De Loreans at work, I don’t know, but the Boot is dictating everything in my life, it is guiding me to where I need to be, and I feel complete peace combined with absolute power…” The young man’s eyes sparkled as he spoke and his coaches regarded him with reverence and humility…

“Tap. We have to play you at 10. We are putting Froggle on the bench. You are to lead us to the final of the FantasticFifteen and will show us the way to victory. Of that we are certain.” Seplummtriee smiled benignly at his young star as he spoke. Sure of his words. Suddenly sure of the future. “But it will not be an easy journey for you. There will be criticism and hardship. There will be doubt and revulsion. There will be… pain….” Seplummtriee looked away, his eyes for a split second appearing glassy.

“I can do this,” said Repus, the calm within him emanating outwards like a beacon of hope in the darkest of nights. “It is what I was born to do. It is my… destiny.”

Lionchaser regarded his young apprentice at this moment and saw the glow of the Boot surrounding him. He felt the power bursting forth from the young man and wondered at the miracle of it all. All of the years of waiting were over at last… Repus was a master of the Boot at last, and he was ready, and able, to lead his team to victory and fulfil his destiny in the process.

“We are with you, Tap. We will always be with you. Focus on the task at hand and we will avert the dark powers of Stain and Tramcheese… we will devise a plan to divert their attention away from you.” Lionchaser’s words had new meaning for Repus, who smiled at his mentor lovingly.

“Thank you, Shark. I will do everything in my power to focus. May the Boot be with us all at this time.”

Away at the side of the field in a small patch of shade, Froth Froggle sat watching the events unfold around Repus. Suddenly, the shade seemed to become darker, growing thicker to the point of becoming form. And a voice echoed somewhere in the back of his mind… “Froggle… Come over to the Dark Side of the Boot… We are waiting for you… Do not underestimate the power of the Dark Side… Or what it can achieve… Come. Join us….”

  • oh my hat… how awesome is this…

it seems that the media at large have ONLY JUST WORKED OUT that the Bulls have not one, but TWO flanks with the last name POTGIETER! And now EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is writing the same story about it!

    The originality literally BLOWS.MY.MIND!
