Sharksworld can exclusively reveal that lock Steven Sykes will return to Durban to join the Sharks Super Rugby squad.

The 27-year-old second rower left the side at the end of last year’s Super Rugby tournament to join Leinster in Ireland but has now opted to reverse that decision and head back to his natural rugby home, in the black and white. Sykes has been released from his contract with Leinster and this afternoon signed a 1-year deal with the Sharks.

Sykes and his young family will fly back to Durban, via Istanbul and Johannesburg, on Wednesday evening and his plan is to pop into Kings Park on Friday morning to say hi, ahead of a full return to practice on Monday.

Speaking to Sharksworld from Dublin, Sykes confirmed that he “can’t wait to pull on the black and white jersey again and experience that special vibe at Kings Park. There’s no other place like it.

“When I got the opportunity to come and play for Leinster, I really jumped at it and it’s been great to experience different cultures and rugby in all sort of different conditions. I always knew that I’d want to come back to the Sharks, of course, but I didn’t realise that I’d miss them quite so badly. When the chance came to join them again, I grabbed it with both hands and just can’t wait to get back there and contribute.

“I’ve been speaking to Plum and he tells me what an exciting squad they’ve got this year and how hard everyone is working. There are some amazing young locks in Anton Bresler and Jandre Marais, along with the older hands like Alistair Hargreaves and Ross Skeate – it’s going to be great playing with those guys and I know how hard it’s going to be competing with them for selection.”

Sykes also revealed that at the time of the decision to relocate to Ireland, the couple didn’t realise that young Steven Robert Junior was on the way and the desire to bring up their first child closer to his grandparents played a major role in the decision to head back to Durban. “I’m really looking forward to a bit of warm weather,” he quipped.

Welcome back Steven! We’re looking forward to great things in the coming season.

  • My feeling at the time he left was that he left too soon.

Looking forward to seeing him in action again. Sykesie is another who probably played a bit too much rugby over the last few years,,, hopefully some decent rotation will keep him at his best.

  • Very good addition for the Sharks.

And a good move for Sykes as well. He puts himself in Springbok contention now – though he’d have been hoping Smal got the job rather then Meyer, who’s more likely to look at a Bulls solution.

  • Positions ‘MOST’ up for grabs?

    - 5? Between Hargreaves and Skeate maybe? With Skeate the front-runner?
    - 9? Can’t say McLeod been good enough to seal the spot.
    - 11? Between Ndungane and Mvovo.
    - 12? You’d think between Bosman & Whitehead?
    - 13? Marius Joubert the front-runner?

Now we have some mongrel back in the pack … meant in the best possible way of course …hehe

  • This is great news; good to have an acknowledged, specialist no. 4 lock in the squad. Having said that though, the only thing Sykes offers that Bresler and Marais doesn’t is experience and a bit of extra mongrel; if memory serves, they’re all much of a muchness in terms of physical stats.

Hopefully this means that a sensible rotation/development plan can be implemented, and not the normal “play Steven into the ground” approach.

Think you got the 1st-choice starting line-up right.

Will be interesting to see the bench, assuming Plumtree was planning on having both Deysel & Coetzee on there (rather then a specialist lock) before Sykes returned.

If Hargreaves isn’t a sure-thing in the regular 22, his career with the Sharks (and maybe in SA) is probably finished….

With both Alberts and Deysel in doubt at the start of the season, we will only really have to deal with that decision later on. But I think Deysel will play off the bench quite a bit, in tandem with Coetzee..

One has to wonder what the reason behind it is?

Could it be that he was down about no longer being in Bok contention, or was he too comfortable at the Sharks, knowing he will walk into the team?

If you check further down the Sport24 story, it does mention Sharksworld, but makes it look as though it’s RugbyWeek’s story.

All the major sites have picked this up now, so at least our name is getting out there. Rugby365 at least credited us as “sharksworld.co.za”, so even though it’s not a link, it will help people find the original story.

Even Jake White spoke of not cheapening the Bok jersey, but before long he had Solly Tyibilika, Tim Dlulane, Eddie Andrews, Henno Mentz, Meyer Bosman, Jaco Pretorius, Bevin Fortuin, Hilton Lobberts, Kabamba Floors, Michael Claassens all making their Springbok debuts.

  • great news. i was worried when he left. the most underrated lock in SA. hardworker and a extra ball carrier. best news this year. at least now we have a proper nr 4 starting lock to pair with skeate. most overrater lock is hargreaves, i dont rate him at all
sykes and skeate to start with bresler on the bench.

Jannie Dup is the exception that proves the rule), No. 4 and No. 5 locks (No. 5 locks are auxillary backline players, Victor and Andries told me so), and open- and blindside flanks (Heinrich Brussow is an opensider. All other flanks are imposters. Apparently). Amazing what you can learn over here

If truth be told I would have been even happier if Mostert was on his way back.

Do you know how long ago this Sykes returning deal was setup?

I felt that 5 locks wud be the comfort zone for the Sharks squad. Also wondered why Plum didn’t make a move to bring in another lock if he didn’t feel satisfied with his no.4s. Perhaps knowing for a long time that Sykes was heading back was the reason for not panicking.

I guess having SS back leaves the door open to pick 2 l/fwds on the bench. Not sure if this is a great idea but it seems like the only way we’re gonna keep all those backrow guys happy.

We are bound to see a l/fwd or 2 moving on at the end of the SR season, that is unless one of them picks up a long term injury.

It will become a case of the town ain’t big enough…

  • @beet (Comment 98) : 2 loosies on the bench is fine… as long as it means only 2 backs.

IMO, you don’t go into any game without specialist lock backup.

fact is, Deysel and Alberts are pretty injury-prone beasts at the best of times – quite understandable if you look at how they play. Question is, at which stage has it REALLY been a problem that we have both of them theoretically competing for the same spot? If my memory is correct, their periods of fitness over the last two seasons have only really overlapped by about 3 weeks!

We’re ALL going to have to get over this concept of “player X is first choice and if he isn’t he’ll leave”. The season is too long for that now. You need to have 2 equally-capable players in each position.

The Sharks’ challenge will be to find a stand-in 6 for when Botes moves on

That then gives us 5, and if he runs them as a group of 5 rather than 3 first choice and 2 reserves, resulting in a more even spread of game time we should be fine.

Khaya has only just started playing openside and has a lot to learn still.

I loved Chris Cloete’s work last season but he’s a small built guy which might play against him. He also needs to work on his offense a bit. This is where Khaya is a strong player – on attack.

  • @robdylan (Comment 102) : if either Jandre or Anton had to start, it wud have been a must for the coach to have a specialist lock on the bench. But now don’t you think Plum might risk it. 3 backs on bench + Marcell/Botes and Deysel as reserves. He has an experienced starter in Sykes and knows Alberts and Deysel can cover 4. So instead of having to make the difficult choice between the loosies, he compromises. Just a thought. Otherwise barring injury to a senior player, a guy like Marcell sees very little game time this season.

  • @robdylan (Comment 120) : ur right but the Sharks don’t really have any specialist ground players. Its hard to call Botes one either. Frans’ general play is good and it makes more sense in terms of the future to start affording him oppot that might otherwise have fallen to Botes.

But that said we are a country rich in l/fwd talent. Buying it when required remains a viable option down the line.

  • Have to say, this is a Sharks squad I could get excited over. I still have some (minor) reservations about open side flank and scrumhalf, I think Meyer Bosman will have to step up in a big way (particularly defensively), and I wish Marius Joubert would have a religious epiphany and take up mission work in Burundi, but generally this looks like a bunch of guys that could be contenders. The big question marks would have to be over the team’s temperament and coaching, I would think…
