Heyneke it is then, or not?

It seems that the National Coach announcement scheduled to take place this Friday afternoon has been finalised before it has even started, with a fresh press release coming from within the Blue Bulls Rugby Company.

According to this press release, SARU had informed the Blue Bulls Board of their intention of appointing Heyneke Meyer as National Coach. This lead to the Blue Bulls Board reiterating their position in that Meyer is under a four year contract with the Blue Bulls and is expected to lead the Blue Bulls Company for this period.

Should Meyer accept the appointment of National Coach, he will have to inform the Blue Bulls company of this decision and resign from his current post as the Executive of Rugby.

The statement went further in saying that the Board will be disappointed to lose Meyer to the National setup, but that they have faith in the coaching ability and current structured in place, under supervision of Frans Ludeke.

It seems as though it has been decided which of Gert Smal or Heyneke Meyer the job will be offered to, it now comes down to which of the two will actually accept the position. This does beg the question as to what exactly the SARU executives are going to discuss for two days before making this announcement?

  • Seems like Meyer has it in the bag. Although not all Sharks fans will share the sentiment I’m pretty excited about the idea of Meyer coaching the Boks.

  • @beet (Comment 5) : Good structures, good assistants, good player conditioning and work-ethic, good management, no players running the team and deciding on game-plans and finally a distinct lack of short-sightedness (bar the selection of flyhalf and eighthman – on those two positions I do have my worries but we’ll have to wait and see what Meyer decides).

  • @beet (Comment 10) : This is at best an educated guess but Meyer’s vision at the Bulls seemed to be to turn them into a dominant (and even feared) rugby team and success would be inevitable as a result. I’m hoping Meyer instills this at the Boks.

I have to be honest – it was unsettling to hear he was getting involved with the Bulls again. The Bulls had lost that intimidating aura under Ludeke (in my opinion anyway). That’s also why this appointment would be a win-win to me.

I’m not saying Meyer is the saviour of the Boks – I appreciate that he had a lot of leeway at the Bulls and that this is a different challenge all together but I’m excited by the possibilities.

From his perspective he should also be looking forward to working with talented players that he could not work with in the past.

  • SARU’s response to the BB press release.

    Courtesy of ruggaworld.

Following the Bulls statement, SA Rugby now also released a statement:

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) confirmed on Wednesday that discussions had been held with Heyneke Meyer regarding his possible appointment as Springbok coach – as disclosed in a media release issued today by Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd. No appointment has yet been made.

The Executive Council (Exco) of SARU will be provided with a report back on those discussions at their meeting in Cape Town on Thursday. The Exco is constitutionally responsible for the appointment of the Springbok coach. Their recommendation has to be ratified by a General Meeting of SARU.

A Special General Meeting will take place in Cape Town on Friday at which the decision of the Exco will be tabled for ratification.

The outcome of those processes will be communicated at a media briefing at 14h00 on Friday, as previously advised.

  • @beet (Comment 41) : Meyer was against Chilliboy’s Springbok selection stating he needed more experience and development before being selected. I seriously doubt he’ll throw him in the deep end and make him Springbok captain when he’s not even Bull’s captain.

In regards to Pierre Spies being selected as Bok captain – it could go either way. Meyer’s loyalty to Bull’s players may just sway him or he may want to show that he’s not biased and select someone like Schalk deliberately to prove his point. Time will tell…

Am I the only one that is worried that Meyer hasn’t been head coach in the last 5 years? He’s been out of the media spotlight and pressure. That doesn’t sound like good prep to be Bok coach.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 51) : Now that would be telling!
Thing is this… Like him or loathe him, Meyer got results for the Bulls. That, and the fact that Gert Smal just signed another extension for Ireland, has most likely got him the job, unless someone on the board has a hissy fit on Thursday/Friday.
The one thing he cannot afford to do when (and if) he takes over the Bok reins is to fill the squad with second-rate Bulls players. And I say second-rate under advisement because if we are all brutally honest, with the exception of Hougaard, there are no other Bulls players who are light-years ahead of their competition in their respective positions. Spies is not the best 8th man in SA. He’s one of them. Chilliboy will be waiting a long time for Bismarck to back down, because Bismarck’s been waiting a long time for John Smit to fade gracefully from view.
Morne Steyn has proved that he can be an asset at 10, but too little too late in terms of what was required at the RWC. He can kick. That’s all. Not a bad talent to have, but not what is required in a revised Springbok game plan. SupeRugby will be telling in terms of what Meyer chooses to do in that respect, but in my mind its no coincidence that Plumtree all of a sudden sees the light at playing Lambie back at 10.
Make no bones about it… Meyer is going to be tasked with giving the Boks their gonads back. It’s a two-year thing, and he has everything to prove in those 24 months. The goal is putting SA back at the top of the international rankings and making the Boks a side to be feared… unpredictable, full of talent and tenacity. He cannot afford to waste that time dicking around with, for want of a better phrase, has-beens.
Expect to see radical changes in the backline, and consolidation in the pack. The likes of JDV, Spies, Habana, and to an extent even Burger (Brussouw is the future, boys and girls) need to prove why they deserve the green and gold, because there is some hot talent out there breathing down their necks. And Meyer is the man to properly out them.
Time will tell if I’m spot on with this assessment.

Having read Victors book – and liking Matfield less after finishing it – I understand why Meyer did so well at the Bulls. But he better step up with something more than family atmosphere, 10 man rugby and 3 planned moves.
