The light blue tinge

After numerous press releases and backwards and forwards amongst SARU, Blue Bulls Rugby, Heyneke Meyer, Gert Smal and even Peter de Villiers, it seems that the cat is now unofficially out the bag, and that the National Coach will be Heyneke Meyer. But what does this mean?

Most of the talk around is about who will be his support staff, and as interested as I am in knowing who the assistants will be, and if there might even be a spot for runner-up to the Bok job Gert Smal, the more pressing points that need to be discussed revolve around the players. Most specifically, which player will take over the mantle as Springbok Captain.

When a Springbok coach is appointed after having been so heavily involved with one local Union, there is always talk that that union’s players will somehow benefit from the appointment. While I cannot for the life of me say how disappointed I will be if the Springbok team is 80% Blue Bulls, I really cannot see this happening.

Meyer, from what I have seen, is a true rugby professional, and if wants to be as successful in his new role as he was at the Bulls previously, I am quite sure he will have to utilise the talent from all the unions.

Meyer’s first big decision will be that of the Captain, and after having John Smit and Victor Matfield lead the team over the last 8 years, a new era is beckoning. So where will the former Bulls man look to find a leader?

He has a few options, starting with the obvious selection of Schalk Burger, who was seen as the natural successor. Throw in a fit Juan Smith (if he ever gets there) and the possibility of Jean de Villiers leading the team from the backline, I battle to see a Bulls player that could take this mantle…

Except for Chilliboy Ralapelle. This player has been groomed to take over the captaincy, but will have to wait until the best hooker in the world Bismarck du Plessis either gets injured or retires.

Other possible pro-Bulls selections may include the continued selection of Pierre Spies at the back of the scrum as well as playing a flair-less, incompetent Morne Steyn at flyhalf. The worst of all could be the inclusion of one Wynand Olivier in the backline, which could spell trouble.

All in all, there will be lots of changes in the Springbok setup over the next few months, and the build up to the series against the English should be an interesting one. I wish Heyneke Meyer all the best in his new job, and ask him to please take his light-blue shaded glasses off.

Agreed. I think this line sums up the article perfectly.

  • I wont say Morne is incompetent. No flair? Fair comment. But not incompetent.

Honestly, Steyn is a decent flyhalf, but he is limited on attack.

We have better in the country, and that is the point I was trying to make..

  • There will be a spot for Morne in the Bok team, Meyer while an innovator is a stickler for playing the game in specific areas of the field and Morne is the man for that.

I wont mind having him around if its a soaking wet Durban monsoon on the go. Lambles will have the inside lane on the jersey fore the most part.

  • It’s not easy picking a captain. Like Morne said one of the considerations is it has to be a guy you as coach can work well with, one who can impliment your ideas. However when it comes to the Boks there is going to be so much interference from SARU, to the extent that they might even pick the captain and force it down the coach’s throat.

For this reason I think Chili stays in the running for Bok skipper.

My choice would be Schalk Burger and I wouldn’t nec consider the appointment a 4 year term in office either.

I think Juan Smith 30 years old already, struggling to stay healthy for long periods, is primed to be overtaken by a younger player in the heirachy. I don’t think he’s the go-to man.

Wouldent mind maybe seeing Josh Strauss there . i think the Mitch ?Barrdman combo lifted the Lions a lot . Of course i will quickly get shot down for thinking this . he is sure a lot better than Pierre Shot-put

  • @Zibbie (Comment 14) : I wouldn’t mind if Strauss was given a go at 8. Alternatively, Spies should start working on his beard as Mocho suggested.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 14) : I must admit I’m looking forward to seeing how the Lions perform in SR this year. Who knows… if they do well we might just see more then just two Lions players. And if Josh Strauss continues to lead the Lions the way he did, then why not. Besides I’m not exactly happy with any of our other options at the moment when it comes to selecting a captain.
