Have we not seen the last of Matfield?

With the dust still settling on news that Heyneke Meyer will be Springbok coach, should he accept the appointment, startling news surfaced that retired lock Victor Matfield might consider coming out of retirement to play for Meyer.

Matfield is 34 years old and could possibly still play another two years, which could handsomely coincide with Meyer’s two year stint, should SARU decide to reduce the contract length. This would instantaneously solve the captaincy issue, and I am quite sure the Bulls will accept the change from lineout consultant to fully fledged player again.

Matfield retired after the Rugby World Cup last year, as the most capped Springbok lock, with 110 caps to his name, second to John Smit on 111 caps. Matfield would add to the core of senior players who include Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers and his second row partner Bakkies Botha.

This news makes the announcement tomorrow even more interesting. We wait with baited breath.

  • Wow. That sounds like a very very bad idea. He retired at the correct time.

They can use him as line out consultant or he could work under Rassie to learn more about the technical analysis of games, but he shouldn’t play.

  • If this is something he would consider, he would have to start playing and getting match fit quite soon..

I would be seriously bummed if he became Bok Captain again..

    Cannot wait for KSA’s reactions..

  • Have to agree with PTAShark,it’s time for the for a change in the Bok no.5 jersey,Juandre Kruger and Andries Bekker are both world class players and between them the no.5 jersey should be covered. Matfield was a superb player, perhaps if I’d had the pleasure of watching John Eales,I could say who the greatest lock ever is,but am sure Matfield takes it. When it’s time to move on,move on

Will it be such a bad idea though? Vic hanging around for another year will ease the captaincy issue(then it wont be Spies) also we arent exactly bursting at the seams with quality 5 locks

How would he survive as being just a player, unlike under the Pdivvy era where he ran the show. Would he be able to take that step back and just play?

Or maybe he will be groomed as future coach, by being both a player and backroom staff?

  • I must admit this week has been one eventful soapie between Heyneke Meyer,SARU and The Bulls.

What people do not understand is that Heyneke Meyer is like our own Alex Furguson.

Those Bulls supporters with Khaki shorts,Groot Nose Rings and Blue Bakkies will tell you that he is “GOD”,A genius or some say our Heyneke Meyer these guys are  without a doubt !

Now Meyer signed a 4 year contract and in that process he said that he wanted to build another bulls dynasty,a mean side, hell a damn brilliant side that will be feared across the world.

That side will wear Pink with Lightning Bolts across those shirts and play a new brand of rugby, running around like headless chickens, inside passes, skip passes, crusaders like backline moves e.c.t..alles… led by Pierre Spies and the next generation of super stars like Venter and Arno Botha.

I am not suprised the Bulls are pissed when i mean pissed i mean those those old Oom Burgers,Friks,or whatever they are called in board of directors must be seething, some woke up this moring feeling…”BLUE”.

As for Muzi well trust me you do not know how i feel
When the sharks pitch up at loftus and give us a can of super whoop ass it will be the being if an end for the Bulls.

Frans Ludeke is highly respected at loftus BUT after reading the Bulls statement and press release yesterdat Bulls supporters must be concerned because its simple Ludeke is not Heyneke Meyer.

    Enough said……

I do wish Meyer all the best..but I cannot shake the feeling that Loftus will soon be SA rugby’s HQ ..

The continued selection of show pony Spies , Olivier passing is for sissies and now Matfiled …sigh

On the plus side we won’t have to sit thru him on the SS panel ..bit of a catch 22.

So perhaps you’d have to turn that dial on the time machine a little further anti-clockwise to be to see Frik in action and make an informed decision on who the best SA lock of all times was/is. Alternatively there might be footage of him available

With his physique, speed and sheer athleticism he should be the greatest 8th man ever (actually could play just about wherever he wants to), but he has no mongrel! He does not belong in the forwards. They need to find a way to rev him up! Maybe figure out a way to transfer some of Bakkies’ agro to him and then watch out the world. Until then he will never reach the heights he should have.

Please please we know Vic,Pedri,Du Preez,Danie have done it before BUT we do not need them anymore in my honest opinion.

Being blind is the only reasonable explanation for his unfailing ability to sidestep the gap and run into someone, and then fall down. That would also explain his continued selection; clearly there’s one of those “include a handicapped player” clauses in the selectors contracts.

He looks like a great athlete BUT when he plays its like he does not want to be there.

I do not know what the future holds for him this is a big season for him.I hope he steps up.

If he fails then the media will continue to call him a show ponny e.c.t.

Meyer will not pick Spies as captain if he has a rubbish season he picks on merit !

Kanko.Strauss,Burger and Vermuelen are damn good players who will not let their country down packing at number 8.

The problem is he will make the team a bulls team -apparently in that Scotland game when Lambie came on the field he shook his head at the coaches. Also wonder why Daniel ,after being selected ahead of Stegman , got demoted?? -These Blue Bulls :???: , now we have the boss at the wheel, Titanic heading for that big blue ice berg.

Personally think it’s taking things to extremes… then again, I remember somebody else having apoplexy when I called Fred a “frog” so I guess people are sensitive about different things.

Bergshark… exactly what term would you be happy for Rich to use when describing his own population group? I don’t mean accountants, BTW…

  • So… to get back on topic… If Meyer appoints the Player Formerly Known as He Who Must Not be Named (aka Victoria, as in Beckham, Secret and Queen), who may or may not be from Holland (isn’t that weird?)to be a “player-coach” or othersuch laughable title, I will pan-fry and eat my Springbok shirt.
If Meyer brings Fourie du Preez (who can be named and may, or may not, be descended from people from the Netherlands) back from the land of the rising sun or wherever he happens to be enjoying his “retirement” and fat pay cheque, and sticks him at No 9 over Hougi’s head I will dye my hair purple and change my name to Tinky Winky.
And if anyone at SARU or the draughty corridors of power down there in the land of the flat table lets Meyer get away with any blue-rinsed shenanigans with any player, nameable or otherwise, whose mother tongue or language of choice is Dutch or one of its derivatives, or indeed (to be perfectly politically correct) one of the 11 official languages in this Rainbow Nation of ours, I will assemble a Goldmember-style hit squad and send Fat Bastard to nuke Cape Town with an earth-shattering atomic-powered fart.

Fikile wants results. The world seems to think Meyer can produce them. But here’s a thought for those who love stats… In his tenure at the Bulls his win percentage in SupeRugby, in spite of two titles, was only 34%. Go figure.
