With the dust still settling on news that Heyneke Meyer will be Springbok coach, should he accept the appointment, startling news surfaced that retired lock Victor Matfield might consider coming out of retirement to play for Meyer.
Matfield is 34 years old and could possibly still play another two years, which could handsomely coincide with Meyer’s two year stint, should SARU decide to reduce the contract length. This would instantaneously solve the captaincy issue, and I am quite sure the Bulls will accept the change from lineout consultant to fully fledged player again.
Matfield retired after the Rugby World Cup last year, as the most capped Springbok lock, with 110 caps to his name, second to John Smit on 111 caps. Matfield would add to the core of senior players who include Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers and his second row partner Bakkies Botha.
This news makes the announcement tomorrow even more interesting. We wait with baited breath.Tweet
