Delayed start for Cooper

Sharks hooker Kyle Cooper is in danger of missing out on the start of the 2012 season as the result of a minor knee issue, which may keep him out of action for the next 3 weeks or so.

Cooper goes in for a scope this morning, when fluid will be drawn from the joint, but while the young number 2 is understandably irked at the disruption, the prognosis doesn’t seem too bad at this stage. The former Glendwwod boy – a keen fisherman in his spare time – confirmed to us that he won’t be out for long and should be able to resume training with his team mates in 2-3 weeks.

With John Smit having left, Cooper has been elevated to the role of third hooker in the Sharks Super Rugby squad and with only Monde Hadebe and 19-year-old Franco Marais training with the Vodacom Cup squad, options are limited in terms of replacing him. The Sharks will have their fingers properly crossed that Cooper makes a full and speedy recovery in order to not disrupt their plans for the season.

Needless to say, our thoughts are with Kyle as he goes in for his op this morning and we wish him all the best for what lies ahead.

  • A great player. His barnstorming runs remind me of Lukas van Biljoen in his prime.

He and Burden are both super players in their own right. I’m hoping to see rotation of our 3 hookers to ensure Bissie doesn’t get burnt out. I pity any team which plays against the Sharks and clashes with one of them
