Meyer won’t be rushed

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has made it quite clear that he will select his Bok captain purely on merit, and is in no rush to make that decision.

Meyer told the Rapport newspaper that he will pick a short term captain while getting to know his squad, and assess his decision once he can make an informed decision.

The decision of a short term captain will most likely only be announced before the England tour of South Africa, which is a good few months away, leaving us with little to report on from a Springbok point of view.

It will be interesting to see whether Meyer calls for training camps and the like while the SupeRugby campaign is in full swing, or whether he will only be watching the games from the sidelines and make up his squad like that.

Potential Bok captains include Schalk Burger, Juan Smith (once fully recovered), Jean de Villiers and Pierre Spies.

  • Schalk and De Villiers prob won’t make the starting XV (Brussow and Frans Steyn). As awesome as Juan Smith is he’s become seriously injury prone and is 30, and Spies is just plain krap. Not really any candidate that stands out

  • Andries Becker is an option, if he stays fit he’s an almost definite starter…

  • I like the way that Meyer is approaching this. Not making any major announcements and evaluating the playing field first. I just wonder what his approach will be with overseas based players like Steyn?

  • @Viking (Comment 7) : The fact that Steyn’s returning to SA will probably tip the scales in his favour. I reckon Jean de Villiers and Frans Steyn will be selected as the two inside centres for England tests. It can be argued that it would be foolish not to go woth their experience when Meyer only have a week to prepare.

  • To me there is NO question that the new Bok captian will be Pierre Spies!! Why? He was the only player to be invited to the 2007 RWC as he was not playing. He was also on the RWC winning tour bus!?? His becomming bulls captian is the first step in this direction but now he will be tested first in the SR tournament. Meanwhile, Matfield will return to fill in for him untill he is ready.

  • The obvious choice would be Schalk Burger.

He is also a certainty in the test side as he can play either 6 or 7.

The fact Juan Smith hasnt played a test in ages should also count him (Juan) out as an option to lead the side.

    Schalk is the favourite imho.

Wrt Spies, please no!! :???:

  • @wpw (Comment 23) : Based on what we know now it would probably be Schala. But should Spies find his form somewhere in PTA then the race would be wide open.

  • @Viking (Comment 24) :

How can any player become Bok captain having not captain at CC or SR level??

How is that possible?? It’s ludicrous if you ask me.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 20) :

    F’ing great.

Opens the door for more departures… and gives himself the excuse of ‘quality players who add value’ (or something along those lines) when he includes Gurthro Steenkamp, Bakkies Botha, Fourie du Preez, Jaque Fourie and so forth… Some quality yes but not something we can work with for long.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Gary Botha snuck into the squad, considering they favored him over Chiliboy a lot of the time.

    Don’t shoot the messenger.

    I think you’re being paranoid.

We don’t know for certain if Heyneke will select mostly Bulls players.

Let’s at least give him an opportunity!!

  • Schalk Burger for Skipper. My starting number 7 in Bok jersey. Juan Smith is a legend, but not my first choice number 7 any more… We can become a menace at the rucks in his new role as a number 4. If Juan wants to be a Bok, he will need to lock it. Willem Alberts and to a lesser degree Jean Deysel are far bruising number 7 flanks and are ahead in the Bok race… Even Derek Minnie has a better chance, his tough, dogmatic and seemimgly unbreakable. New dawn for Bok legacy… Bring in the young guns. PS: heartfelt sympathy for Beast – the Republic was expecting a lot from the man. Speedy recovery, come back hungry, come back angry.

  • Juan Smith is the best captain of the selection group now, but his run of bad luck will keep him from being full time captain. They are in need of a captain who LOOKS the part, has good media SKILLS, is COOL headed and is a great ROLE MODEL and will get the youngsters and supporters to feel proud towards the bok jersey. This is a long term project and not about the best player. Spies is a poster boy for all of the above.
