Meyer joins the Lions

Former Sharks age-group scrumhalf Tian Meyer has been called up as cover to the Lions Super Rugby squad, after injury looks to have ruled out two of their off-season acquisitions.

Both Ross Cronje and Whestley Moolman are struggling for fitness, leaving Michael Bondesio the only recognised scrumahlf in the group. Meyer, a former Westville boy who left Durban to join the Pumas some years back, has come close to Super Rugby in the past but never quite managed to shake off the “bridesmaid” tag. He was called up to the Sharks squad at a similar point in last year’s season, but never quite managed to get the nod; once Conrad Hoffmann went down later in the campaign, he was again overlooked in favour of Fred Michalak.

Comfortable at a few different positions in the backline, Meyer will hope to build on some impressive performances for the Pumas at Currie Cup level and will hopefully be rewarded with a permanent squad place in the Lions Super Rugby group.

  • I enjoyed watching him in the age groups. I think he will do well with the Lions and has a good chance of becoming the first choice backup.

  • Good for Tian. His persistence has paid off.

I think the Lions should test out their Aussie youngster Eddie Bredenhann for some pre-season game time to see how he shapes.

As think Rudy Paige could surprise if he’s given a bit of confidence backing.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 13) : Cappuccino Floors is still with the Cheetahs, 4th choice backup I believe. Pieter Louw as far as I can tell, has been released from his contract with the Stormers, with no mention as to where he went. Last I can find of Steve is that he retired, no mention after that

  • @beet (Comment 4) : Bredenhann struggled to cement a starting spot in the U21′s in 2011 competing with Nico Kruger and even vian vd Walt (the U19 scrummie). He has gone back to Oz.
it seems that Rudi Paige is out of favour with the 3 Super rugby scrummies (in order) Bondesio, Ross Cronje and Moolman. I believe he has been injured but will probably play Varsity cup for UJ – with Guy Cronje at 10.
Personally, I was sorry to see Chuma Faas (the 2008 SA schools scrum half from Grey PE) who played U19 for the Lions in 2009 forced to give up rugby through injury.
On a slightly different topic but knowing of your interest in SB rugby I’m not sure if you picked up that Ntsolo Setlaba (MHS headboy and 1st XV captain in 2007) is captain of defending champs UCT’s Varsity cup side. Setlaba played Craven week on the flank in 2007 and a bit of U19 for WP the following year. He is joined in the UCT loose trio by 2008 MHS 8th man James Tatham.

  • @steve (Comment 29) : Thanks Steve.

Something has to give and in my case its been the Varsity Cup on Monday nights but I’ll look out for the MHS guys if I get a chance to watch. I politely asked Ryno for some info on key MHS players for this year via email amongst other things.

I’d seen Vian vdW and Eddie B play for the Lions u21 this year. I thought Vian did a good job but it was really his outstanding efforts for the Lions u19s that caught my eye. Always imagined that he was below Eddie B in the pecking order. Eddie B looked sharp when he was on the park. Moolman used to be 2nd fiddle to Faasen at the Bulls in the juniors and I didn’t have much hope for him to go far in pro rugby, so it’s interesting how these players respective careers are turning out now.

Talking of MHS players, is that Louis Alberts on the Bench for the Bulls, the Louis Albertse that used to play for MHS?

  • @Pat (Comment 31) : Interesting – not sure if it is the Louis Albertse from MHS. Louis Albertse was contracted by the Lions after craven week 2008. he played for the U19′s in 2009 and U21′s in 2010/11 where he competed with 2010 SA U20 tighthead Ruan Dreyer for a starting spot. He has also had a few injury problems.
I had thought he would be playing Varsity cup for UJ this year but havent seen his name in any squad list.
I understand that John Mitchell is keen to allow some of the young/fringe players in the Super rugby group to play Varsity Cup for UJ to stay match fit – a departure from past practice.
I believe that Ruan Dreyer is one of them.
I hope Louis Albertse is still in the mix somewhere – he is a solid scrummager and has very good hands for a big guy.

  • @beet (Comment 30) : The Lions have always liked Moolman – he came through the systems at Monnas. He was at the Lions briefly in early 2009 (before going to the Bulls) and I think that the Lions hierachy preferred him over Chuma Faas who was also contracted in that group – which I didnt understand – Monnas influence perhaps?

  • @steve (Comment 36) :

Yep ive seen Dreyer at tighthead for the UJ team, plus Guy Cronje, Jaco Kriel and De Chavez – plus a few others. I would imagine they are probably going to back Dreyer over Albertse and maybe he has made the move across to the Bulls – I guess we will find out when the friendly is played.
I imagine we will see a lot more youngsters backed by Mitchell. I think in the past year his focus has been on his starting 15 that he will utilize and only now is he starting to look to add greater depth in and around that. Hence the likes of Ruan Botha, Andries Coetzee, Visagie, Volmink all getting a runout at Newlands.

  • @Pat (Comment 38) : I’m told on good authority) that it is indeed Louis Albertse ex MHS and Lions on the Bulls bench.
Good luck to him – i’m sure his old man Bertus will be enjoying the game with a nice ‘captain & coke”!
