The Stormers hosted the Cheetahs at Newlands on Friday night as part of their Pre-Season series, and the visitors came away surprise victors 22 – 14, thanks mainly to the boot of young Johan Goosen.
Goosen kept the Cheetahs noses in front for the match, starting off by scoring 9 points in the first half, 6 through penalties and adding a drop goal to lead 9 – 6 at half time. The Stormers’ points were scored by the Greek God himself, Demetri Catrakilis, who seemed to have an off night with the boot, missing two penalties in the first half.
The second half was a complete opposite to the rather dull first half, with both sides getting in on the try scoring action. Deon Fourie was the first to cross the white line, barging over in the corner and leaving a difficult conversion for his kicker, which was missed. The Cheetahs hit back almost immediately, through winger Rocco Jansen, the try being converted by Goosen for a 16 – 11 lead.
The rest of the scoring came down to the kickers again, as the Cheetahs held their nerve and managed to keep the Stormers backs at bay to score a deserved victory in Cape Town.
Scorers:
Stormers: Try: Deon Fourie. Penalties: Demetri Catrakilis (3).
Cheetahs: Try: Rocco Jansen. Conversion: Johan Goosen. Penalties: Goosen (3) and Sias Ebersohn. Drop-goal: Goosen.

I’m not surprised the Cheetahs beat this youthful Stormers side.
The Cheetahs played their first choice 15 whereas the Stormers selected a largely B side full of youngsters.
I reckon only Burger, Elstadt, vd Heever and Carstens will make the Stormers 22 against the Hurricanes.
@wpw (Comment 1) : No worries, it’s only a warm up game. Results don’t matter
@wpw (Comment 1) : Agreed.
Makes it quite difficult for us to deduct any sort of form here.
Stormers played their A side against the Lions who will argue they had their B side and it was the other way around against FS.
Cheetahs surprise stormers?
Come on Richard, the only surprise is that the Stormers were able to keep it reasonably close. Very much a 2nd-XV… guy like Catrakilis actually more like 5th-best flyhalf.
I was expecting a hiding.
Goosen for president
@wpw (Comment 1) :
Dont think thats the Cheetahs first choice team my man
@Original Pierre (Comment 3) :
easy . dont ready anything from pre season . everybody is testing dept .
@Zibbie (Comment 6) :
Who was missing? Coenie, Juan & Ashley in the forwards.
Rayno Benjamin in the backs?
@Zibbie (Comment 6) :
So who would come in to strengthen them??
Johnson perhaps. Who else??
@hendrikp (Comment 8) :
Rayno was on the bench.
Juan doesn’t count cos he’s injured.
That was pretty much their 1st choice imho.
@wpw (Comment 10) :
Pretty damn close yeah.
@hendrikp (Comment 11) :
sure sure
@Zibbie (Comment 12) :
I can see that the rest of us might as well not bother. The might Stormers are gonna roll over all and sundry and win all the trophies yet again.
Oh wait…
@Big Fish (Comment 13) : Ouch, that was nasty!
I LIKE it!!
@Culling Song (Comment 14) :
Still a good Cheetahs side and the Stormers could test there depth
@Big Fish (Comment 15) : When do you leave Dublin?
@Culling Song (Comment 17) :
On the plane right now. About to depart the grey skies of Europe for our sunny shores.
Can’t wait! Don’t know how these okes take it.
