Smith to get fit first

Newly appointed Hurricanes captain Conrad Smith might not be fit to start the tournament against the Stormers in Cape Town come 25 February.

The All Black centre arranged a backpacking trip around the world, an agreement he had with New Zealand Rugby as well as with his employers the Hurricanes, and only returned to training this week.

With no rugby or training from after the World Cup last year, Smith’s body is in no shape to play Super Rugby, and he might have to wait until his team returns from their tour of South Africa before he can lead them out.

This does leave a slight problem for the men in yellow, after they are already without Ma’a Nonu, Aaron Cruden and Hosea Gear in the backline, who now seem to be slightly short in backline players.

Centres Tusi Pisi and Tim Bateman are both still plying their trade in Japan, and might only be available from the third week of the competition, leaving them horribly short on centre options.

  • A fit Smith is a great centre, rather play him when he is fit

  • @Mutley (Comment 1) :

    I agree..

The funny thing is that it is the player who said he would not put himself up for selection if he knows he is not 100% ready..

    Real maturity there!
