Sharks forced into changes

You’ve got to hand it to the muppets running the judicial process in SA Rugby… they’ve seen fit to finally get around to convening a disciplinary hearing after Fred Michalak was cited for a “late and dangerous tackle” in last year’s Currie Cup final!

Anyway, Fred has apparently been found guilty and the onerous punishment handed out means he’ll miss Friday’s warm-up against the Kings, although not the match against the Bulls a week later. Coupled with a leg infection that sees Jacques Botes pulled as a precaution, the Sharks will make some changes to their side to play the Kings.

Marcell Coetzee switches from blindside flank to open, with Tera Mtembu coming into the starting lineup in the number 7 jersey. Keegan Daniel remains on the bench, with coach Plumtree said to be happy with what his skipper has shown in the two previous warm up games – and keen to give Bismarck du Plessis a go at leading the troops.

Charl McLeod comes off the bench to take Michalak’s place at scrummie, with Cobus Reinach elevated to the match 24.

Sharks (Revised):

1. Dale Chadwick
2. Bismarck du Plessis (Captain)
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Steven Sykes
5. Anton Bresler
6. Marcell Coetzee
7. Lubabalo Mtembu
8. Ryan Kankowski
9. Charl McLeod
10. Patrick Lambie
11. Lwazi Mvovo
12. Tim Whitehead
13. JP Pietersen
14. Odwa Ndungane
15. Riaan Viljoen

Replacements
16. Craig Burden
17. Julian Redelinghuys
18. Wiehahn Herbst
19. Pieter-Steph du Toit
20. Ross Skeate
21. Keegan Daniel
22. Cobus Reinach
23. Meyer Bosman
24. Paul Jordaan

  • Plum apparently think Marcell could do a job at 6… not sure I agree, but will be interesting to see how he goes there.

  • @robdylan (Comment 1) : Some interesting options available once Keegan comes on! I hope Plum shifts Coetzee to 7 and Mtembu to 8 or vica versa. That would be a pretty decent combination in my opinion.

  • @robdylan (Comment 1) : @vanmartin (Comment 2) : Coetzee does not strike me as a 6 at all; would’ve preferred had Plum started with Coetzee at 7, Kanko at eight, and brought Mthembu on a little later (either as a 7 or 8), while giving another youngster (not that I know who that would be) a chance to impress in the 6 jersey.

Guess that was one bridge too far though…

  • Mthembu at 7 is interesting..

We seem to have a distinct lack of 7′s after Deysel. Its a straight slug between du Toit and Mthembu to wear that jersey agaisnt the Bulls.. Unless Coetzee takes it by default..

    Who instigated this 4 month old citing? I can`t believe the Lions would`ve bothered . . .

Is it too late to cite Pedri Wannenburg for that powerslam on Deon Kayser back in the 90 `s ??!

Bringing in Mtembu is also an indication that PSdT is onboard for learning experience at the moment otherwise he should have earned promotion to the starting lineup in accd with the initial squad of 24.

Try and look at the positive…we can see how Marcell goes as a 6, Mthembu gets another chance to impress, and hopefully Reinach gets some time off the bench…But i must say i was hoping Fred and Lambie could build on their partnership this weekend…eish

  • @robdylan (Comment 22) : Thanks, he is in the right BMI range for his Height and Position(8th man). Won’t really be beneficial for him to go over 105kg.

That’s why 7′s should always at least be 1.89m…so that they can be at least around 110kg without mobility really being negatively effected. Random comment of the day. Although, Alberts is an exception to this general assumption of mine. Great to be that heavy without losing speed.

I think Marcell can do well at 6, if he sets his mind to fetching i know he can do it. Will be great to have a guy that covers the whole back 3, and performs each equally well. But until Alberts/Deysel return, he simply has to play 7.

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : Yes. Like one of those 2. Time is ticking away. They don’t have to overtake Botes in the value chart but they have to plant the seed in the minds of the powers that be that they are rapidly approaching that level.

@robdylan (Comment 22) : Sjoe! Wud have thought Tera weighed a bit more that just 102kg. He looks like a very solid mass these days.

  • 1.87 sounds about right, remember standing next to him once and we were shoulder to shoulder the same height. Of cause the big man was much bigger. Glad to see the big guy coming,he was 1 of the few Dalians who I really liked. Monster on the field, but off the field a true gentleman. Remember him coming off the bench time and time again at the JWC in 2010 and making a big impact, how Sauls never gave him a start at the tourney remains mystery when he was clearly producing the goods with every opportunity he got, hell he outperformed CJ Stander who just never showed up in 2010 having had a brilliant campaign in 2009. Hopefully he can jump ahead of Kanko who from what I’ve heard is slowly losing his grip on that no.8 jersey.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 3) : very difficult, I have toyed with the idea of Coetzee at 6 for a long time..one thing for sure though, the boy is talented and has the ability to play 6. I know his best position is 8 but is that the position that will enable him to wear the green and gold? I don’t know…looking at his skill set..6 might just give him the best opportunity.

  • @robdylan (Comment 28) : Well this morning I thought if Joubert and Ludik get picked for the Sharks XV, I won’t both to pitch for the games (not that they’ll have any Durban games anyway). But I’ve calmed down since then.

I think the arrival of Groenewald has complicated matters a bit.

Presumably Tera will take the no.8 jersey, then it might come down to calls on Groenewald vs Stander for 7 and Cloete vs Kleinhans for 6, this all assuming PSdT is taken on tour for experience or used at no.4.

  • @Ludz (Comment 26) : Tera used to be a bit like a younger version of Kanko. Give him a sniff of a gap and he’d punish a defensive line. He was really good in open broken play. He might not have been as quick as Kanko but he was a good side more powerful in his carrying.

Now he’s heavier, slower and the player capable of busting open a defense seems to have disappeared. Plus he doesn’t possess great leg strength for the tight game imho. He struggles to power his way over the game-line and quite a few times last year in contact, I saw him lose yards as the ballcarrier.

I don’t really want to diss him (I guess I have) coz he’s been one of my favourites to watch as a Sharks junior in 2009 and 2010. He used to be a player that WOWed the small junior rugby crowds. I really hope he can get back some speed and work on his leg strength.

  • @beet,sorry am not using the proper reply, this new phone is a bit of a nightmare. I think he had a poor 2011,if his performances in 2009 and 2010 are anything to go by. He was a player on everyone’s lips in those years, but last year from what I heard (didn’t see a whole lot of him last year,1 Sharks XV and 1 u21 game) he was more solid than breathtaking. We used to stand up in awe at the Rec,he was just a pleasure to watch, even though he from the opposition school. We loved watching him play. A Terra without those burst of pace into space just isn’t a Terra, hopefully he gets back to what he does best. He played at 12 in his u17 year and he was just hard to contain against much smaller backline players, hell he used to run over most forwards as well, but than Scarra Ntubeni(who was an 8thman at Dale) went to KES,with the emergence of a 15 year old Ace Jho at 12. They decided to move Terra to 8thman who had the size and certainly skill set to be a very good 8thman

  • @robdylan (Comment 33) : Mainly coz we have an attack minded 15 in Gouws who’s proven to be excellent at making the right run-kick-pass decisions from the back be it at u21 level. Not saying Gouws is going to be a success story at the top level but want him to be given the max opport. Louis, again probably one of the nicest guys on the planet but modern day attacking player in the mould of the likes of a Beale,
Dagg, Foden or Halfpenny, he is not and at this stage of his career it’s getting safe and safer to assume he will never be.

Rich and I got to witness a bit of his line speed at the trials and from a standing start it wasn’t good. Couple this lack of explosiveness with virtually no lateral ability by way of a step or swerve. Neither is he a powerful man on his feet.

He was one of those guys I was thrilled that we’d signed. Even after his first shortened season of u21 in 2010, I thought fine the Sharks can cut Swanepoel, Otto and Dunlop, as long as they keep Tera coz he’s going to have a huge season in 2011.

Man I’d really like to see him recapture that kind of form again.

    @beet (Comment 50) : and thank you…

in reality, the Sharks don’t like their juniors getting “too big for their boots”… cos that way they’ll start to push back when they’re given shitty contracts and treated like crap. They go out of their way to avoid “raising the profile” of the juniors and that seems to be a direct order from Straeuli himself. So when they see me interviewing a junior player or trying to talk them up and encourage them, they get mif with me.
