Super Rugby preview – Reds

The defending champions have it all to do this year, and have to keep 4 chasing teams at bay in order to win a second Super Rugby tournament in two years. For a talented team like this, they will feature in the playoffs, but I feel there are teams who want it more.

The Reds came from nowhere to win the title last season, being wooden spoonists just a few years prior, and will be hoping to take that momentum into the competition this year.

Influential skipper James Horwill lead the team with great passion last year, and with an extra year’s experience, and a team behind him that know they have what it takes, it will make for some interesting rugby.

The Reds have a good forward pack which forms a platform for their attacking backline to run havoc, with Will Genia in charge of a backline that features Quade Cooper, Anthony Fainga and Digby Ioane.

Quade will miss the first couple of rounds, but in Michael Harris they have another running flyhalf, which fits in perfectly with their game plan. The Reds will have little competition for the top spot in the Australian conference, and can use their week derby opposition as a bonus to end n the top two of the overall log.

Watch out for Beau Robinson, this burly Schalk-like flanker will have a huge season.

The Reds Super15 Rugby squad is as follows.

James Horwill Lock
Quade Cooper Flyhalf
Ben Daley Prop
Rod Davies Wing
Anthony Faingaa Centre
Saia Faingaa Hooker
Will Genia Scrumhalf
Liam Gill Openside Flanker

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) : VERY! I realised that last season :(

And it’s almost that difficult that if you don’t have a good start in round one (say top 20ish) then you better have an OUTSTANDING rest of season or you have no chance.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) :

but it might also work out a bit dodgy . if Quade plays 14 games , i will score more points then the person who uses the guy who starts in 10 for the first few rounds

or at least i save a transfer .

its most defiantly one thing to contemplate .

you dont want guys in your team who will only play 2 games for the whole season

  • @Zibbie (Comment 7) : You also don’t want to put a guy in who will start in round 3 or 4 only to be told, he hasn’t recovered as quickly and will now only start in round 6 or he plays one game in round 3 and injures himself for another 4 rounds again.

It’s a fine line whether to chose a non-starter or not.

I will risk it with one or players, simply because we can be pretty certain they will play the extra games come the playoffs..

But it is a fine line, as you still need fit players in the position to score points for you…

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 10) :

i think Carter and Quade are 2 such players . but then having 2 HB’s not playing .. sjoe very risky …

is Carter injured or just being rested ?

  • @Zibbie (Comment 11) : I can’t see that he should be resting since he missed half of the WC. Probably still injured.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 15) : He’ll be back at the end of March. Not sur when McCaw is back but the Saders do have a decent openside in Matt Todd

  • @JarsonX (Comment 1) : Jono Lance also very versatile, can play anywhere, Mike Harris played at 12 last year too, so when Cooper recovers those two might fill the 10/12 axis, switching as required by the state of play…
