Sharks suffer further front-row blow

Sharks prop Julian Redelinghuys suffered an unfortunate ankle injury in last night’s warm up game against the Southern Kings and looks incredibly doubtful for the start of the campaign.

The extent of the injury has not been confirmed within the camp, but those at the ground who saw the injury happen report that it looked serious indeed and may possibly have been a break or dislocation, which would imply an operation and a lengthy spell on the sidelines for the strong former Monnas lad.

Given this latest setback, the Sharks must now surely be looking to bring front row cover into the squad, whether from the youth ranks or outside of the province.

We’d like to wish Julian all the best and the speediest possible recovery.

  • I would bring up Allan Dell. I’ve got over bringing in a Loan signing, if it isn’t a top quality prop. If they looking at a middle of the road prop, we might aswell back one of our most promising young Props, Allan Dell.

  • If we think about it, just compare Redelinghuys and Allan Dell, unfortunately losing redelinghuys and bringing in Allan Dell…doesn’t look too bad too me at all. And the Loosehead option would help a lot.

  • @JJR (Comment 4) : I agree to a certain extent.

This doesn’t sound nice, but rather Redelinghuys than Jannie Dup or one of the other experienced props. The replacement for Redelinghuys, if needed and if done from within, will probably be just as experienced as Redelinghuys is.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 5) : Yes, agree. To be honest he is the only guy pretty much in the whole 24 that was in the game last night that could get injured and be replaced by someone with similar quality/pedigree and experience…other than the Locks, i love the comp. for the lock positions, it’s awesome. Future Sharks lock combo of 4.Du Toit and 5.Bresler…to see that would make me smile soo hard

  • And we also have good comp for centre. 6 locks fighting for 2 spots…Sykes, Skeate, Breler, Du Toit(Probably play flank next week),Marais and Hargreaves.

And 6 centres for 2 spots, Whitehead, JPP, Jordaan, Bosman, Joubert and lets throw in Mjekevu too

I believe the competition for Spots this year, the loss of some over the hill ballies and the even more increased focus on physical conditioning will take The Sharks to that next level, and see us finally lift the Superugby title…should’ve got it 4-5 years ago…tired of finishing/falling just short…not this year. Go Sharks!!!

  • AllyCat,certainly can’t be too bad. He’s certainly very mature for his age knowing him personally,at u16 he was probably the best prop at schoolboy level in the Border region. So I think it might be time to back him. Danie Mienie, don’t believe I’ve ever seen him play, can anyone tell me about him?

  • @Ben (Comment 10) : He is with The Sharks XV…we don’t need him right now with the Guys we have currently; but Joubert is not around for too much longer and with Currie Cup we should see him around, he is still very young he will come through…if you asked me find a player that is almost a JPP double…i would choose Mjekevu, they have very similar qualities, in the way they play and physically they are also very similar.

I hope Jared Meyer and Mjekevu can be Sharks XV starting centres…they were a high school combo. And also Williams and Lindeque have had numerous chances to impress; but so far i havn’t seen much to be honest. Lindeque has the potential, Williams…well he will have to prove me wrong; because i wrote him off long ago.

  • @Ludz (Comment 8) : Danie Mienie has been a reliable player for the Sharks u21. He’s a bit like Deon Carstens in open play, not necessarily a great trench warfare situation ballcarrier but give him a bit of room and he can easily make 15-20m no problem. He is by no means lazy. Very active player. He’s also a bit on the short side which is becoming extremely unusual for a LH prop.

I think JJR is right. The real question for the Sharks is: is Mienie a good enough scrummer for the next level up. I imagine that all our junior props are now on standby but I still feel like I did when Beast got injured. Bring in s/t experience as cover. Avoid the risk at this stage.

Also to me Maks v Dyk is our best scrummager in the juniors right now but he’s not a LH and Ally is short on experience in that role. But the thing about Dell is he has an excellent attitude and sometimes that mental edge makes it easier to overcome any physical obstacles.

  • @beet (Comment 14) : I’ve been saying that since Beast got injured. Bring in a senior prop…surely there’s got to be a loosehead somewhere! Even if it means looking overseas. I have a good feeling about this campaign, don’t want any “what if’s” or “should have’s” come end of the competition. This is superugby rugby and we are talking about the front row. There is nowhere to hide there and you can get exposed the entire game resulting in your team being on the back foot and maybe losing the game.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 16) : I agree. We’ve now lost 3 experienced props in the space of 3 months surely we need to draft in an experienced campaigner. I’d consider looking at props playing in the Vodacom Cup. Surely there a decent replacement can be found locally. If not look overseas. I’m all for giving these youngsters a chance but in doing so we could end up throwing them to the wolves.

I would stick with Williams and Lindeque, that combination will work really well after the time they spent playing together last year.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 18) : We will see…i just think Williams and Lindeque were very one dimensional in what i’ve seen, and lack creativity…Meyer and Mjekevu bring flair. Although, Lindeque looks a lot better if he has a 12 that gives good service. Lindeque still has the potential, just want to see it grow now. Williams…don’t know what he offers that will be a help to The Sharks in the future.

Hopefully he can prove me wrong (Williams).

Jordaan and Lindeque were together at Grey, maybe if we could see them as a Combo one day it could bring the best outta Lindeque…cos Lindeque has all the physical attributes, pace and good defender…just havn’t see all he can do on attack, yet. I think he is not totally comfortable with williams inside him…i really want lindeque to do well, because he has shown glimpses of what he is truly capable of…he needs some consistentcy now.

  • @JJR (Comment 23) : mate, when you dislocate a joint, you ALWAYS damage the ligaments supporting that joint. That’s why a dislocation is always such a serious injury.

While it may be technically true that Julian has “sprained ligaments”, assuming that he’ll be back quickly is a huge mistake. He’ll need to undergo an operation to fix this, trust me.

In the latter case he should then learn to only “friend” people he actually knows and/or can trust to keep his comments private.

JJ has already got one oke into a huge amount of trouble with the Sharks by blurting out private Facebook comments, but clearly doesn’t think he’s doing anything wrong. Wonder how he’ll feel if a contract does get “ripped up”, as has been threatened…

Rob to be honest you still havn’t told me why saying the things i have is wrong…if a person is injured they injured, why does it have to be kept secret…if a Rugby palyer is seen in crutches…must we just ignore it and say, nope he is not injured, it is confidential news that can’t be shared, i just don’t get it.

  • All the Junior players mentioned have undeniable talent but don’t underestimate the huge difference in level between Junior Age or even Vodacom Cup and the S15. Very few players (esp tight 5) can make this transition successfully.

  • @beet (Comment 39) : Coooper at loosehad; don’t think it’s a future option for The Sharks, cos he is such a great hooker and at around 1.76-78m and 106kg…not exactly loosehead prop territory. But could possibly work as Rob has suggested previously.

Doubt it will ever happen, though, he is such an amazing hooker, don’t want his focus on being a prop…he should rather work on his lineout throws…the only weakness in his game, the rest of his game can be compared with Bissie Du Plessis…Kyle is that good in my eyes.
