De Jongh withdrawal sees Habana favoured at 13

Bryan Habana looks set to start at outside centre for the Stormers against the Hurricaes this weekend, with fellow Bok Juan de Jongh failing to recover in time for selection.

De Jongh took a blow to the jaw in his side’s warm-up fixture against the Lions a few weeks back and has not managed to heal fast enough to come into contention for the Super Rugby opener. Habana should now partner Jean de Villiers in midfield, the first time he’ll have played in that position since leaving the Lions many many seasons back.

In better new for the Capetonians, both Nick Koster and Dewaldt Duvenage will be fit for selection, with lock Rynhardt Elstadt also an odds-on favourite to play, despite a needing to pass a fitness test on Wednesday.

  • I’m quite looking forward to seeing what both Brian and JPP can do at 13. I have a feeling Conrad Smith will be doing a lot of defending, but then again, the Hurricanes team is a bit of a mystery this year.

  • With Bryan at centre I imagine Aplon will move to wing with Joe at fullback. I’d prefer to see Aplon launching his counter attacks from Fullback to be honest, but Joe is solid.

  • Habana at 13 should have happened in 2010! He has all the attributes to be a good 13 and it was at centre that he was first noticed. DeJonng will always be a 12 in my mind, is he better than JDV-he used to be when he came straight from Varsity Cup and could defend! There are better wings than Habana at the moment but with Jacque Fourie playing in Japan i think the Bok 13 is up for grabs big time!

  • @SheldonK (Comment 12) : Why does everyone view JuanDeJong as a 12, he is a 13, Im certain he has always been a 13.

Finally someone who has the right commentary about this du Plessis guy..

The guy certainly still needs to show what he can do, yet he is touted a star…

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 13) : Just his attributes make me think of him as at 12. He has a very good inside out step and used to be very good on defense and has pretty decent handling. He may have always played 13 but i just always think of him as a 12 hey. Dejong/Habana combo could be interesting, but they may also go wondering sometimes.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 15) : That JP DuPlessis has looked decent but i wouldnt go ask him his size for a Bok jersey just yet. Patience is a virtue as they say!

  • @SheldonK (Comment 16) : I hear you on that but I think his step – handoff works well for a 13, also at 12 he is often guilty of hanging onto the ball, and you really want your 12 to pass.

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) :
I haven’t heard any words to the contrary. He’s a solid and dependable fullback, but having Aplon gives us a great counter attack and forces the opposition to think before taking to the boot. Also, anyone who has seen Aplon play knows that he tackles well aove his weight.

  • @Leviathan (Comment 20) : I’m with you on this one but I think they brought Joe pack with the view that he would play 15 while Appels shifted to the wing.

    Well let us think here.
If we put Shadow on one wing, who would be best suited to covering the other if Bryan is at centre. I’m not really up on WP speedsters.
As I said, I prefer Gio at fullback, so if he does end up there, who takes over the wing from him?

  • @Leviathan (Comment 22) : I’ve always been a fan of Gio at 15, I’m not arguing with you on this. I liked the look of that Arendse kid but didn’t see enough to make a proper call.

With Gio and Joe at the back we have two very attacking options but damn they are short.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 21) : Agreed. Joe should start at 15 with Apples and Shadow ( spit ! ) on the wings.

@csb (Comment 3) : Will Conrad Smith have real possession to threaten the wp backline though? I think he`s got a long season of defending ahead of him.
