Bold selections for Sharks

John Plumtree has named an exciting, albeit somewhat experimental-looking Sharks lineup for Friday’s Super Rugby crunch clash against the Bulls in Pretoria.

Anton Bresler, Fred Michalak and Tim Whitehead have all been named to start in a team that doesn’t differ as much from the outfit that faced the Kings as we expected it to. In fact, the tight five and centre combinations are unchanged from that match, as are the men in jerseys 8,10,11 and 15.

Ross Skeate has been retained on the bench, as Bresler starts in the number 5 jersey. The loose trio is predictable, with Keegan Daniel and Marcell Coetzee named on the flanks to partner regular eighthman Ryan Kankowski.

Michalak is back at scrumhalf after initially being named there for the Kings clash (he later had to withdraw due to suspension) while Louis Ludik comes in at right wing for the injured Odwa Ndungane in the only other change to the backline. A conventional 4-3 split amongst the backs sees only Jacques Botes providing loose forward cover, with all of Charl McLeod, Meyer Bosman and Paul Jordaan making the grade.

JP Pietersen, as expected, starts in the number 13 jersey for the first time.

The Sharks

1. Dale Chadwick
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Steven Sykes
5. Anton Bresler
6. Keegan Daniel (Captain)
7. Marcell Coetzee
8. Ryan Kankowski
9. Frederic Michalak
10. Patrick Lambie
11. Lwazi Mvovo
12. Tim Whitehead
13. JP Pietersen
14. Louis Ludik
15. Riaan Viljoen

Replacements
16. Craig Burden
17. Wiehahn Herbst
18. Ross Skeate
19. Jacques Botes
20. Charl McLeod
21. Meyer Bosman
22. Paul Jordaan

  • Can’t wait for this game! Bold move from Plum, he is either very brave or the players he chose showed him some magic beans during their training. Sharks to take it by 9

  • I like the new Plum!!!

Only dissapointment is to see no Stef Du Toit on the bench; think the team is lacking a ball carrier; but hopefully Bresler can assist Coetzee and Obviously Bissie will be huge as always. Looks like the ball will be flying all over the park on the weekend, this looks like a lineup primed for a fast paced game.

    Go Sharks!!!!

  • Credit to Plumtree for taking the risks. Sure, you could argue that going for the conservative in the 1st hit out this SR season, and against a very kicking-minded team would be understandable, but sometimes a leader needs to jump further than necessary to change direction. No doubt that played a part here too.

The bench split probably also has to do with the front-ranker injuries and the experimental centre pairing.

All in all, this is a team cearly geared to running rugby. If that exciting 9-10-12-13 combo works, there is going to be a big hiding for the Bulls.

  • With Deysel out i think we also need a team effort and guys must support Bissie when trying to steal ball, just attempting to steal the ball can force the opposition to go off their feet…i think this is an important aspect to look at…we will see how it goes; but i think competing for ball at the breakdown will be key to winning some games this year.

We can have a dangerous counter attacking team.if our combinations click we will be a high scoring team :-)

  • @war1 (Comment 43) : Flair, we lost lots of games last year because of our lack of tries; now we will create a lot more and have players that can finish it; pretty much the whole backline except for Fred has played outside back, including 13 once in their lives…so we have finishers all over the place.

Not to mention Loose forwards like Keegan, Marcell and Kanko who score just as many as backs, and then Botes off the bench, Jordaan off the bench…i just see The Sharks scoring a lot of points this year.

  • @war1 (Comment 50) : Oh Sorry…i’m a bit slow, forgive me. I’m tired of being nervous all the time, i don’t want to feel like i’ve been shot when we lose…so if The Sharks team go out to play attacking Rugby; but come up short sometimes, i might feel less crappy, because i know this 2008 CC Style works best for The Sharks…Build the platform with a strong scrummaging unit and Big Ball Carriers, and use the backs to finish and build and use the momentum the forwards have created…rather than last year were the backs actually looked to the forwards to do everything…we need a whole team effort this year.

The Conservative approach tends to make the wingers simply just guys that chase the up and unders…and i hate that. I want The Sharks wingers to work just as hard as a 12 would have to work.

  • Like war1 I have my concerns however after some hard thinking I’ve had a change of heart ,especially about Ludik at wing ,I think it`s the right move by Plum.
I’ve always liked the way Bresler played in the loose, just never thought of him as an enforcer. I like having him at 5, just hope he is solid at line out time.
I’m still not sure we will win.

  • @robdylan (Comment 51) : I think that is what is exciting us, we know we have a very attacking lineup that could go on the rampage; but could work against us if the forwards don’t go well and the weather conditions are not great…so i’m hoping for a beautiful sunny day, if so, i truly belive we will win the game, and a lot will be down to our flair and handling, aswell as the scrum, where Chadwick, Jannie and Herbst will force the Bulls Props to give away penalties.

Spreading the gud Vibes, again, The Sharks are back!!!

  • @Talent (Comment 54) : Me too on the Ludik thing, for this game and the rest of the squad named, he is the right choice to replace injured Odwa.

Bresler is also a good ball carrier which will help Bissie and Coetzee, also him and sykes are beasts at clearing out, i just hope they stay on their feet…will be interesting to see how the lineouts goes…i say Sharks must just keep the lineout simple.

  • Wow! Isn’t this an early announcement even for a Friday game.

Well done to Anton Bresler. I didn’t think he’d make the starting lineup. I really hope he can hold up his end of the deal in the lineout. At the trials he was a keen contender in the loose, so I expect him to build on that aspect.

So happy that Tim Whitehead came to Durban and now gets to start. I suspect that if he’d stayed in CTA, he’d have got the start for sure. His decision has paid off and hopefully our investment in him will do so as well. It’s gonna so different to see a manoevring WP style 12 out there (who isn’t over the hill)in black and white.

Michalak. Just hope and pray inform Freddy pitches up. His pass isn’t too flash and I’m not sure his base kick will be anything to write home about either, so it’s possibly his creative energy and good decision-making that could win the day.

  • @JJR (Comment 56) : I think the Bulls will be good at set piece ,better at line outs and possibly better at scrum time . If we are to beat them it will be in the loose, so our defence is going to have to be in their face. We are going to need to harass them the entire night and pounce at any counter attack opportunities.

If I were the Sharks I would target Sadie ,as good as he is in broken play if he`s wrapped up he`s no threat at all ,he doesn’t have the passing game to put those on his outside in a better position (well at least what I have seen of him so far).

I think they will eventually out muscle us and play Arno Botha @ 6 ,Cj Stander @ 7 and Spies @ 8, I’m concerned that if that happens we will have our hands full.Im assuming Botha is on the bench??

Plus the need to relieve pressure esp near our goal-line and help out Lambie from time to time.

Its an area critics have said Hougaard needs to improve in as well, so maybe even stevens.

  • Wow! Reading this team selection (released on a Tursday!!) I thought I had one of my accidents; you know, those “he tripped, he fell, he accidentally ingested a blotter of lab-grade LSD” incidents.

I LIKE!! Ooh, look at the pretty colours…!

A likely explanation. Notice that I didn’t mention a certain young centre from WP who is about to captain the Boks? I was being nice to you.

  • Very bold selection from Plum and really looking forward to the match. We will have the more mobile pack and need to use that to our advantage. I think we should have the edge at scrumtime and think Chadwick will give Kruger a good working over. My only concern regarding the forwards is lineout time, particularly Bresler, I just hope he manages this area well, although he does have Sykes to help out.

As for the backs I’m really keen to see Michalak at 9 and think he could be a real catalyst. Also great to see Whitehead at 12 and I hope he brings some creativity to our attack, whilst he will need to be strong defensively as Venter is a strong runner. Also delighted to see Jordaan on the bench where he will have a great impact, I really think he is going to burst onto the scene in a big way in Superrugby. Cant wait till Friday!

  • I REALLY like the team. I also like the seeming change in Plumtree ( but I do have serious doubts about that ).

It remains only to be proven that Plumtree has REALLY seen the light, for the team he picked are suggestive of open, creative running rugby. Plum is known to be in favor of “stampkar”rugby.

If the Sharks play the way the team has been picked, we are in for an exciting season. If they still want to play stampkar rugby, it will end up in disaster.

  • Just one concern, after sleeping on the team sheet…
A few years ago the sharks had this STUPID idea of announcing a team and run on the field with a different one… I’ll shit my pant if that happens.

  • Interesting side that Plum has selected, will be interesting to see how a few match ups go, especially between the loose forwards and centres. The Bulls at home are very tough to beat so hopefully a loss wont see wholesale changes unless they are required!
