Cheetahs name strange team for Lions

The Cheetahs have named an experimental looking team to face the Lions this weekend, as Ashley Johnson will have to make his impact off the bench, and Tewis de Bruyn starts ahead of Piet van Zyl at scrumhalf.

The team will obviously be captained by Adriaan Strauss from the front row, being flanked by WP Nel and Trevor Nyakane. The only concern at this stage is the availability of Lappies Labuschagné, who injured himself in a Varsity Cup game on Monday night, and even though named to start, will be replaced by Philip van der Walt on the side of the scrum should he not pass a late fitness test.

There are also surprises in the back three, as Dusty Noble is preferred to Rayno Benjamin, with the latter not making the bench in favour of youngster Willie le Roux.

Should the entire bench be used, a total of 8 players will be making their Super Rugby debuts for the Cheetahs.

Cheetahs: 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Dusty Noble, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Rocco Jansen, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Tewis de Bruyn, 8 Davon Raubenheimer, 7 Lappies Labuschagné/Philip van der Walt, 6 Heinrich Brüssow, 5 Izak van der Westhuizen, 4 Andries Ferreira, 3 WP Nel, 2 Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1 Trevor Nyakane.

Substitutes: 16 Hercu Liebenberg, 17 Lourens Adriaanse, 18 Waltie Vermeulen, 19 Ashley Johnson, 20 Pieter van Zyl, 21 Sias Ebersohn, 22 Willie le Roux.

  • Wasn’t there a rule made after last years Varsity Cup final issues that you are not allowed to play varsity Cup if you’ve played S15 or something along those lines?

So are the Cheetahs then just letting Lappies Labuschagne play varsity Cup until the S15 kicks off?

    Who knows?

I find it strange that he was allowed to play, surely there is always a risk that he gets injured, especially if he was earmarked to start?

But you have Elton ‘vetgat’ Jantjies, who has a bit more experience than Johan ‘I am better than Naas” Goosen.

And Josh ‘groet die grotman’ Strauss will give Brussow a bit of a hard time, but Brussow will come out tops, I am sure.

Not sure what the heck Drotske is up to!

They need to win these games if they are to have a shot at not finishing last in the SA conference. Not a time to mess around :x

Went 4 from 8 against overseas teams last year, but only 1 from 7 against SA opponents.

Jantjies v Goosen – No contest

Centers – On par I’d say

    Back 3 – No contest

Loosies – other than Brussow no contest …Minnie will take care of of Brussow.

Could be Naka is bluffing and change the line-up come Sat.

Its critical that the Lions come out firing and put the game to bed early on.

Start as a means to go on.

  • Interesting selection from Drotske. I think the reason why De Bruyn is starting over Van Zyl is he provides a bit of experience to the relatively inexperienced Goosen. Pitting Goosen and Van Zyl together will leave the team with two players that have not played super rugby yet, and in two of the most difficult positions on a rugby field. I reckon they are favouring De Bruyn to help Goosen along if he does get a few jitters. The other reason is De Bruyn is probably sharper at this stage due to his recent 3 month stint with Lyon.

As for Labuschagne, I think the Lions will have two fetchers, in Grobbelaar and Minnie, so it might be a selection two counter those two, and I think the reason for Raubenheimer at the back over Johnson is a lineout call, as they messed up in that area against the Bulls. Nonetheless going to be a cracker of a game, really looking forward to seeing how Goosen, Jansen and Ferreria go as well as Trevor Nyakane.

  • In the warm-up game vs the Bulls, Piet van Zyl looked unusually flat and struggled to spark anything.

When Tewis came on the difference was clearly noticeable and I wonder if the coach has just responded to this current form shown.

  • I’ll stick my head on the block and say that if Johan Goosen has a good SR campaign, we’ll see him in Green and Gold this year, maybe not as a starter but in the team getting gametime.

Also from the bit I seen of him in 2011, JP du Plessis, a fine centre. Still u21 this year.

I think Rob touched on the problem here at the Sharks. Whereas other Unions are happy to promote their youngsters and create a sense of optimism that comes thru in comments even here on Sharksworld, the Sharks want their future stars to remain anonymous. Thats why an 18 year old like can have an outstanding 2011 season playing against players older than him and still struggle to get on the radar even around here.

  • @beet (Comment 63) :  Goosen is a great find and if he keeps on playing like this he will be the leading points maker is SR. There is an unwritten rule for flyhalves, however: You WILL get a bad dip and it is how quickly you can get through that dip and back to your previous game that makes you a great flyhalf. Johan’s Achilles heel could be his own team. He seems to be making most of the play on his own. As the opponents start reading his patterns he might be exposed and cut down before reaching his true potential. He still has a long way to go to book the bench of the green & gold.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 68) :

There are not too many 19 year olds floating around that I’d say can be in a Bok jersey before their 20th birthday. I think Johan’s birthday is only in July.

Besides that thread debate is once again about Johan Goosen being once again touted as a Bok walk in.
