Kiwi gig lined up for Schoonbee

Former Sharks age-group lock Johan Schoonbee, who left Durban earlier this year, has been snapped up by New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay Magpies and attended his first practice with the squad in Napier last night.

Schoonbee has raised many an eyebrow on the rugby scene ever since his schooldays, where his massive frame has regularly stood out against all other more regularly-proportioned contestants; currently standing at 2.07m in his socks, it’s no wonder that Hawke’s Bay see the huge value he can bring standing virtually anywhere in the lineout!

In a slightly ironic twist, it was at the Magpies that another former Sharks junior lock, Johan Snyman, resurrected his career before returning to South Africa to play for the Lions.

Schoonbee, who is still just 21, will play his club rugby for Taradale and hope to make his debut for the Magpies in the ITM Cup later this year. Good luck with the new opportunity, Scoembo… we’re sure it will turn out well for you!

  • Haha Taradale.

Hope he doesn’t get involved in any broom stick assaults.

He has been there or there abouts in the Age Group teams, but was behind the Marais brothers, and Bresler..

  • @Argex (Comment 4) : He basically got kept out of u21 by Pieter-Steph du Toit and Peet Marais and a Lithuanian player. When Mike Williams was fit again, he fell even further down the pecking order.

Bresler didn’t really directly ever keep him out. They haven’t really been in the same age group.
