The Chiefs have named an experienced squad to take on the Highlanders on Saturday, throwing all their new signings straight into action and making up a backline that looks very strong.

The team will be captained by Liam Messam from the side of the scrum, where he will partner Sam Cane and Fritz Lee in the loose trio. Amongst the forwards, the front row of Taumalolo, Elliot and Afeaki looks solid and strong.

It is amongst the backs though, that your mouth will fall open, with halfbacks Leonard and Cruden (who is a new signing) linking up to run the backline, with Sonny Bill Williams and Richard Kahui outside them in the centres.

But wait, there is more as the wingers are Nanai-Williams and Lelia Masaga, both of whom have some serious wheels, with young Robbie Robinson at fullback.

Chiefs: 1. Arizona Taumalolo,2. Hika Elliot,3. Ben Afeaki,4. Craig Clarke,5. Brodie Retallick ,6. Liam Messam (c),7. Sam Cane,8. Fritz Lee,9. Brendon Leonard,10. Aaron Cruden,11. Tim Nanai-Williams,12. Sonny Bill Williams,13. Richard Kahui,14. Lelia Masaga,15. Robbie Robinson

Replacements :16. Mahonri Schwalger,17. Toby Smith,18. Michael Fitzgerald,19. Tanerau Latimer,20. Tawera Kerr- Barlow,21. Andrew Horrell,22. Asaeli Tikoirotuma

  • Exciting stuff Sam Cane gets the start.

If this Chiefs team can gel, they could be the surprise package this season.

  • @beet (Comment 1) :

That backline looks seriously good, I am a huge Kahui fan!

The depth worries me though, a few injuries and they could find themselves down the log..

  • Excited about Tim Nanai Williams, even though would’ve liked him at 15,he’s shown in the limited opportunities that he could be a world class outside back

  • Would’ve been even better if they’d had enough good winger, and didn’t have to proceed with Robbie Robinson at fullback.

Should walk over the Highlanders though… Not sure Taumalolo is the greatest starting option though, probably will be Toby Smith over the long term.
