Bad news for Burger

News coming out of Cape Town is not good for Schalk Burger.

It seems as if Burger who left the field clutching his knee after just 12 minutes of play will be ruled out for 4-6 weeks.

This should not be a major problem for the Stormers as they are arguably the team that probably has the most depth at loose forward in South Africa and have a large pool of replacements to choose from. We cannot confirm if Schalk Brits has called his travel agent yet or not.

More info as we get it.

  • Not nice but this does help out a little for next week. :|

  • Bad fortune for our captain, but if today proved anything, it’s that we have a fine cover in young Kolisi. Rest up Schalk and take it easy.

  • Really bummed for Burger – we don’t have anyone in SA who comes close.

But then again, at least the Stormers have that awesome loose forward depth.

  • Nice dig there KSA Shark.

There’s no way the Stormers have nearly as much depth at loose forward as the Sharks.

Btw, Sharks are deffo favourites for next weeks game. They’ll be hurting…

  • Stormers will lack some physicality in the forwards with Burger out…
Kolisi as exiting as he is with ball in hand he got rucked and tackled back a few times (he did make a very good tackle driving a Hurricane back)….

Personally I’m just grateful that I come from a rugby loving country with a lot of player depth. Altho I’d love to see all the talent coming thru exclusively from the Sharks region, I’m really just happy that it keeps on coming from somewhere in SA.

Also liked their u19 loose trio last year Rayn Smid,Cobus Nel and Beyers de Villiers, they worked really well as a combo and individually are prone to their moments of brilliance. So give these lads a season or two and I reckon, they’ll have some solid depth at loose forward

  • It is nice how people say Stormers have more depth at Looseforward when there only Bok at looseforward is Burger and i think Vermeulen only has an emerging Springboks cap. Sharks have Alberts, Deysel, Keegan and Kankowski who have played for the Boks. Kolisi is a star, him and Coetzee are very similar.

I hope Etzebeth, Bekker, Elstadt and Jandre’Kruger are our Springbok Locks this year. Pieter Stef- Du toit will come into the reckoning in next years season, unless he gets more game time than i think he will get this year…with this new Plum who knows, we might see a lot more of him, and that would make me very happy, maybe Du toit can make EOYT :)

Burger out for only 6 weeks, he will be back for Boks and hopefully Stormers drop some points with him gone…keen for next week…Sharks please work on the lineout this week…and as the Canes showed, select a attacking team and then hold onto the ball…Counter attack will also be a good focus point because of Van Aswegan’s average kicking game. Joe P, also just punts it far, his kicking shouldn’t be a problem…Put Jordaan at 14, Please :)

  • New caps for the Boks this year, in Tri-nations and EOYT. I hope.

Front row- Herbst has a good chance i think.
Second row- Etzebeth, Elstadt and Kruger, Du toit’s time will hopefully come next year.
Back Row- Kolisi, Coetzee and Arno Botha…all 3 are equally talented in my opinion.
Halfback- Goosen and maybe S. Pretorius.
Centre- Whitehead, JPP(Centre debut), Sadie, Jordaan (Used as an impact player, no one i can think of that can bring more impact off the bench, could even be a wing option, but don’t know if heyneke would back the youngsters this early, EOYT might see him.)
    Outside Back-
Joe P the only guy i think that can get a Debut, Jordaan a possibility.

  • @robdylan (Comment 28) : The names i mentioned are the guys i want, not really what needs to happen…i just like all the young guys who i feel can really help the Boks evolve and most of the youngsters coming through like Jordaan, Etzebeth and Goosen are Freak talents, i have also liked how Kolisi has continued his Bok u/20 form…i’m really excited for the Future of SA Rugby…the playing stocks are great…most of the guys are in their prime and others are fresh youngsters, Heyneke has a difficult job…Form youngsters Vs the tried and tested will be his greatest challenge.

Man it hurts to wake up knowing The Sharks lost this weekend…

  • @JJR (Comment 24) : With respect, thank goodness you are not Bok selector or coach or we wouldn’t be 2nd in the test rankings but 8th or 9th. At international level you always select your best players irrespective of age. The list you mentioned are players of significant potential but there are a lot of players way ahead of them in the pecking order. Goosen, I agree is a superstar in the making and will be in the Bok mix sooner rather than later.

  • Afternoon all.

Needed a day to get over Goosen & the Cheetahs losing. Proves how valuable the guy is, if he’d been on the field, the Cheetahs probably would’ve won.

But this isn’t the first time that he’s gone off injured while the Cheetahs are leading. Happened during the CC as well which cost them a game, and a potential home semi.

Can’t argue with how good he is… I mean COME ON!!

Hopefully he can continue to grow though. Get the small things perfected. Decision making can definitely still improve a lot. Tackling technique looks like it needs work

Besides, I’m sure we’re all pretty sick of seeing cheap debuts handed out.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 48) : I didn’t say all of them…where do u guys that that from…Tri-Nations and EOYT…meaning possibly one maybe two in Tri-nations and the rest for EOYT…i’m including the whole season…there is absolutely no chance someone like Goosen will play in the Tri-Nations this year, unless there are a few injuries at 10.

Again, words in my mouth, who says i like Whitehad because of what he did on Saturday? And i don’t think it is crazy to believe that Whitehead could make a Bok squad this year. I mean JDV has played very average for a while now, and can’t make it to next world cup and Frans Steyn is in France, and De jongh is a tad light weight for a 12 at international level…so who else am i missing. Heyneke said he will select on what the players have done in Superugby, not because of what they did 2 years ago.

Cheap Debuts? 90% of those i metioned are future Bok stars, no doubt.
