Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies broke a Super Rugby record on Saturday night, on his way to winning a crucial local derby for his team.

Jantjies, who succeeded with nine penalties on the night, for a personal tally of 27 points, beat the previous record of 8 penalties, held jointly by Jannie Kruger, Willie Walker, Meyer Bosman, Derick Hougaard.

Jantjies, who had a personal duel with Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen, outscored the much hyped flyhalf by 27 points to 20, scoring all the points for his team.

The Lions came from behind to take victory on the night, in front of a somewhat disappointing crowd, to secure four points and get their season off to a good start.

  • I have to commend this website for doing a piece on Jantjies …he had an absolute blinder.

Attendance was poor sure but imo the weather played a big role in keeping people home ..nonetheless I’ll be back at Ellis Park come friday night.

Having spoken to people the other factor is that we are always getting our home matches in the 7 o clock time slot which is rather late. I don’t get why the Stormers match wasn’t played at 3 and the Lions at 5.

i was just about to say its a dam embarrassment to Lions rugby that a Sharks website is the first to run a piece on Eltons performance !!!!

Why are we as Lions supporters always last to acknowledges a great performance from one of our players ?

Its been across the board and very dissapionting imo …he ultimatly out played Gossen but the talk surrounds the chosen one … I guess Jantjies is just gonna have to keep at it and hopefully he’ll recieve the recognition eventually.

He did . Elton kept his cool and played very very well !! a year ago he would have missed half his kicks . We would have lost by 8 points .

Great performance by the Man !!!

  • @Zibbie (Comment 6) :

What impressed me was his composure and his attacking of the advantage line ..I counted one missed tackle which he can be forgiven for  and making key tackles too ..special mention for Bandisio he saved our bacon on 2 occasions with good defence, not bad from the little guy.

One thing is for sure we are gonna have to sort our lineouts out or else we are going to battle with 1st phase ball.

I think the Lions defended well over all . The whole team needs to just do lineouts this weekend :P

We got the win despite not playing very great as a team . We need to improve but im happy with a win next to our name (Our first home win since 2009)

Well done on a good win.

Things will only get better on your side.

I think if this match was played a year ago, you would have lost simply because the team did not have the belief.

Just one thing I would do to your team though… let Butch and his R3million contract go.. he is so past it..

You need to blood another youngster to step in when jantjies goes with the Boks..

thank you ! and thanx for doing a piece on Elton !

Personally i wouldent send Butch off to the Old age home just yet .

If both are fit and available Elton should easily start but when he is not around we will need Butch

    Thanks !

You may have a point about Butch ..surely there is a youngster out there we can groom at a fraction of the price.

However we may just need Butch as the season progresses ..I’d hang onto him for this season and then hopefully have someone lined up come 2013.

imo Hollelbach didn’t have such a great game so playing Butch at 12 could be an option to get our money’s worth.

I though Hollenbach did well on defence..

But you could see his mind was elsewhere..

All the players will automatically be up a notch after the first game..

I’m backing you guys to beat the Hurricanes..

Keep it up. Until you meet us that is.

I know …as you know its been years… but we’ll have to beat the Canes at home for the optomism to become tangible.

1st opening game win superugby since 2009 …2 from 2 opening games ..doubt its ever happened.

I feel if we click like we did in the cc final and sort our lineouts out we’ll win come friday …5 points would be ideal but first and formost the win.

  • Well done to Jantjies. Its comforting to have place kickers in the SA ranks that are on target >80% of the time.

I really love it when Elton who does ever so well to hold the ball in 2 hands, keeping the D honest, spots a gap and goes for a solo dash. He seems to make good decision when it comes to this run vs pass aspect.

    Actually, surprising enough:
1997 – week 1, beat cheatahs in bloem, week 2 beat brumbies in Joburg.
2000 – week 1 beat bulls in pretoria, week 2 beat stormers in joburg.
2001 – week 1 beat stormers in cape town, week 2 beat highlanders in joburg
In fact, in 1997, week 3 we beat highlanders, and week 4 waratahs, both in Joburg!
