Stormers coach Alister Coetzee has handed Jean de Villiers the captaincy for Saturday’s Super Rugby encounter against the Sharks, with young Siya Kolisi coming in on the open side flank to replace the injured Schalk Burger.

In other changes to the side, Juan de Jongh comes in at outside centre, forcing a shift back to wing for Bryan Habana. Gerhard van den Heever, who started in the 11 jersey last week, drops to the bench as a result. Nizaam Carr has come into the 22 to take Kolisi’s place in the number 19 jersey.

In the final change, Peter Grant, fresh from Japan, has been named as back-up to flyhalf Gary van Aswegen.

  • Put Jordaan at 14 and he will step the Crap outta Habana…we all know how Habana rushes up, and that his balance isn’t great, so easy to step.

Van Aswegan at 10…won’t be suprised to see Grant come on at half time…if Mcloed is at 9 Van Aswegan is gonna have pressure on him all day. Go Sharks!!! Make it happen!! Strongest Stormers tight 5 i have seen in a very long time…we need to select a big man at 7, PS du toit please. He can also help us combat the amazing lineout skills of Etzebeth and Bekker…some serious height there!

  • Has anyone seen the Sharks Facebook page today? They did a poll on the best Sharks XV since 1990, and the result was quite, well, disputed. Was wondering what Sharksworld users think

For those who haven’t seen it, according to Facebook fans, the best 15 Sharks for the last two decades are:
    1. Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira
    2. Bismarck du Plessis
    3. Jannie du Plessis
    4. Johann Muller
    5. Mark Andrews
    6. Keegan Daniel
    7. Willem Alberts
    8. Ryan Kankowski
    9. Ruan Pienaar
    10. Pat Lambie
    11. Lwazi Mvovo
    12. Francois Steyn
    13. Adi Jacobs
    14. JP Pietersen
    15. Andre Joubert

  • @John Galt (Comment 12) : I think our backs edge theirs, not on name value but as a Unit i think our backs will play better, JDV hasn’t been on from in soo long, Juan has also blown very hot and cold, especially on attack.

I’m very happy with how our backline is looking this year, and JPP, Whitehead, Jordaan and Mvovo…wow exciting attacking players. JDV and JDJ have not given us much to be excited about the last year or so.

I think The Sharks biggest concern is the Lineout and Breakdown on saturday…also our aggression was not up to Sharks standards last week…if Alberts and Stef Du toit are involved, it should remedy a lot of those early season issues.

I suspect this lightweight loose trio+reserve will pave the way for the Sharks to select Botes at flank with KD shifting to 8

  • People must also remember Mcloed’s energy is great off the bench, but when the team is trying to stay composed(1st half) and play territory game first, Mcloed’s all guns blazing approach can backfire…hence all those knock-ons and runs by himself last season…he realised he was the only one wanting to run from everywhere on the field

Only one of the players you mentioned I’d have ahead of him would be Frans Steyn. Pete’s like Aaron Mauger, he’s calm and does the basics consistently well which creates space for the players around him.

  • We need to combat that pack. If we don’t, their backline has the pace to destroy us.

Plumtree must wish he blooded Sithole or Jordaan earlier – putting either of Odwa or Ludik against Habana or Aplon is like setting a mule to catch a gazelle.

The Stormers loosies are well-balanced when you look at the height and power they are carrying in the 2nd row. I think the Sharks need to bring Alberts in to start if he is fully fit, otherwise I think we will be in big trouble.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 38) : If Ludik is wearing 14 this weekend i won’t be chuffed  Personally i would go for Jordaan…wing is a great place to get ur starting debut, and with Van Aswegan at 10 for Stormers we don’t need to worry that the kicks on Jordaan will be perfect. I actually hope Stormers employ the Bulls tactic against us, cos i don’t think they will execute the kicking nearly aswell as Steyn and Hougie did last week.

  • @JJR (Comment 40) : Agreed! I want Sithole or Jordaan in the 14 jersey to give us a chance of scoring tries. I want Ludik, Viljoen and Odwa all vying for the 15 jersey solely.

I think Odwa might make a good 13 too as he defends well, is strong on his feet and is intelligent. He lacks the pure pace now for a wing at that level.

  • @Ben (Comment 41) : We will have to wait and see; but Habana can’t run round him, so he will have to straight into to him, so defence should’nt be a problem. When he came on last week i saw him make a couple of good tackles, using some decent technique…which is good cos in the past i havn’t seen him us some technique in making tackles, cos he is a calm player eventhough he is a very exciting runner, not too much aggression i have seen from him so far in his short, but exciting Rugby career so far.

He tackled well at Craven week and SA Schools and showed good aggression…maybe he chilled off a bit cos he thought he was too good for his opponents, his mentality will surely be different now that he is playing against and with some of the best players in the world. Defence is all about mentality/attitude to me.

Hope Jordaan gets his chance to start soon, feel he will take his chance well.

Sithole V Jordaan…Jordaan is faster, can step better and Sithole isn’t a great tackler, and not so sure about his skills under the high ball; but both great young players. Sithole does run into contact hard which i like. Future Stars for sure…both will also have the opportunity to play Springboks one day, i have no doubt of that.

  • @JJR (Comment 44) : Paul is excellent at hauling a guy in from behind, good at a side-on tackle as well as low tackles, however head-on tackles and upperbody wrap-up tackles were the areas he needed to improve on in the 4 months since the u21 season ended.

Very little to find fault with his attacking game, perhaps a bit of attention to taking flat balls in traffic was/is needed as well

  • @Ben (Comment 50) : Yes indeed Jordaan’s best position will be 13, i also believe, but he can also be a great winger…i mean many centres make their debuts at wing. Nice place to get into things without being thrown into the deep end.

I think Ndungane can play for The Sharks longer if he focusses on Fullback…when i have seen him play there i have really liked it, some of the best play i have seen from him has been at 15. I like him more than Ludik at 15. Viljoen is obviously our 1st choice 15; but i hope to see him come into the line more often this weekend on attack.

  • @Ben (Comment 55) : I think we fine…Richards was never really tested at senior rugby, great at age group level; but his weight at just over 80kg is quite light, and to be honest he is not even a wing in the sevens, he doesn’t have blistering explosive speed compared to jordaan, Sithole and Mvovo. And we must not forget we could see Emil Schwartz back within this year hopefully, and at around 100kg and runs under 11 seconds 100m he will be able to fill some gaps you think we might have at wing. Lets not forget we also have Mjekevu in the Sharks XV superugby experience at wing, and scored some great tries at wing too.

Whatever Richards lacked in size he made up for in heart. Watch any sevens lately? Richards is very fast! He doesn’t play wing at sevens because he plays as play maker. Same as Cecil Afrika. Wanna tell me Afrika isn’t quick? :)

  • @Ben (Comment 60) : I watch all the sevens games, trust me he was moved from wing, then to center and now halfback…he lacks the pace to competitive out wide against the top players, he has solid top speed, bit i was with him at school, he runs over 11 seconds in the 100m…yes he shows great heart, but i don’t think he offers more than what Jordaan, Sithole and Mjekevu can offer, so we don’t need him…no point have too many specialist wings anyway…wings rarely get injured and when they do there are always full backs and centres that can cover at wing…Eg. look at Ludik now…if we had another wing he would hardly play…cos Lambie is also ahead of him for the Fullback position. Sharks have many versatile players and that helps us maintain a strong group of players that can cover when the injuries hit…Richards would be a player being paid to just train not play…we don’t need that.

Yes Afrika is quick, but he was always a playmaker…this is the first time i have ever seen Mark as one…it is because his speed isn’t fast enough to be a wide player in the sevens game and if u don’t have speed you will have to use physicality to beat the defenders, which to be honest isn’t Mark’s game.

  • @JJR (Comment 64) : I just feel Mark has something special about him. I don’t have their 100m times in front of me so I’m not going to debate that. All I can go by is what I saw. And to be honest he looked pretty darn quick to me and as small as he is he is one hard dude to bring down.

  • @Ben (Comment 65) : Yes, true he does look fast, but remeber he is 1.75m he’s gonna look very fast just like when Rosco specman runs. But to be honest he hasn’t done anything at the Sevens that makes me want him back at The Sharks…or let me rather say he is not better than the current stock of wings we have in Durban. No point having someone that is not gonna be used…he made the right dicision to go to the sevens, there is a reason he is there…he wouldn’t have taken that dicision lightly.

  • @JJR (Comment 66) : Look by all means, I feel sevens is the right move for him. He can learn a lot there. What I’m saying is, they sharks should have sent him to the sevens like they did with Paul Jordaan and Sithole because I feel Mark is a future star. And its quite obvious now that you don’t rate him but I do. ;)

  • @JJR (Comment 66) : What’s made me a fan of Mark Richards in his junior days was his extra determination and innovation. He was the kind of player who could make something out of nothing

I don’t watch much 7s but am a little surprised that he hasn’t been able to impress with these good qualities.

  • @beet (Comment 68) : Yes, he was amazing at schoolboy level; but he has stayed the same size and all the other players have developed and grown, i just feel Mark is the same player he was when he was 18.

@Ben (Comment 67) : Don’t see the future potential from Mark in 15′s…he reached his peak in age group rugby for me personally…all players at the top level are commited and determined if they wanna be the best…i have already spoken about the Richards thing a while ago(Got into trouble)…don’t wanna do it all over, again. Mark has shown glimpses of what he can do in the sevens; but i havn’t seen enough, Sevens does for some take a while to get into…even for the best.

Sevens was a good move for him, that’s the last i talk about Richards/The Sharks story  I wish him all the best in his Sevens Career.

  • We will need some muscle upfront… Tackle them HARD, and BACKWARDS, otherwise the Stormers 11 to 15 will create havoc….

  • Saturday will be the same as every other Stormers/Sharks game. The Sharks will need to retain possession under pressure and against a good Stormers defense. If they can do that then they will win. Stormers score a lot from turnovers and other teams errors as a result of the pressure they put on teams. Patience is def a virtue come Saturday!

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 14) : I`d like to offer John Smit in Bismarcks` place. Best Captain we ever had.

Also Johan Ackermann instead of Muller. That year we actually had an impressive maul.
Pat Lambie would never have gotten a start if we had Honiball right now.
Oh and there`s no way Adi Jacobs was ever as good as Jeremy Thompson or Andre Snyman.

Gavin Lawless was probably our best kicker ever but there`s no place for him in the team if you consider the great Joubert.

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 88) : Craig Davidson at 9, Baartman or Sowerby at 7, Warren Britz at 6 (best fetcher the Sharks have had ever) and Ackerman at 4!!

I’d also have Robbie Kempson at 1 as he was more aggro than Beast.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 89) : love the names you mentioned, Wahl Baartman and Guy Kebble would be in my all time xv, but their best rugby falls out of the last 2 decades section, crazy how time flies. Britz and Sowerby were classics, but my selections at loose forward are also what these men meant to the Sharks brand, same reason why Beast and Johan Muller get my nod. Akkies was not there long enough to be considered a legend, although he was an immense player. Craig Davidson is also someone who is a gem… And yes, in retrospect I would maybe put him at 9, a real Sharks legend… If I had named a 22 squad Shaun Sowerby would be in it. Britz was electric, but I love the working class attitude of gritty Jacques Botes – been a servant of our team for so long. But that’s the beauty, we all have our favourites.

So many good players over the years in each position…hard to leave out Halstead and Brent Russell as well!!
