The Super Rugby weekend closes in Cape Town when the Stormers, fresh off their victory over the Hurricanes take on the Sharks at Newlands. Both teams will be desperate for the win as games like these determine the outcome of the conference.

The Stormers have lost their captain Schalk Burger, but welcome back Juan de Jongh to the midfield, with Bryan Habana moving back to his accustomed position of wing. Siya Kolisi has been tasked with filling the boots of Burger, and will look forward to taking on the Sharks loosies.

The Sharks have lost Ryan Kankowski to a broken thumb, and with Willem Alberts not quite ready for action yet, they have opted to start with Botes, Coetzee and Daniel. Changes amongst the backs sees Tim Whitehead injured and Meyer Bosman taking his spot. In the front row, Wiehahn Herbst gets a start ahead of Jannie du Plessis.

Another close game, with the Stormers taking it based on home ground advantage.

Stormers: 15. Johan Pietersen, 14. Gio Aplon, 13. Juan de Jongh, 12. Jean de Villiers (Captain), 11. Bryan Habana, 10. Gary Van Aswegen, 9. Dewaldt Duvenage, 8. Nick Koster, 7. Duane Vermeulen, 6. Siya Kolisi, 5. Andries Bekker, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 3. Brok Harris, 2. Tiaan Liebenberg, 1. Steven Kitshoff

Replacements: 16. Siyabonga Ntubeni, 17. Frans Malherbe, 18. De Kock Steenkamp, 19. Nizaam Carr, 20. Louis Schreuder, 21. Peter Grant, 22. Gerhard van den Heever

Sharks: 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Louis Ludik, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9 Frederic Michalak, 8 Keegan Daniel (captain), 7 Marcell Coetzee, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Ross Skeate, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Dale Chadwick

Substitutes: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Jannie du Plessis, 18 Anton Bresler, 19 Lubabalo Mtembu, 20 Charl McLeod, 21 Marius Joubert, 22 Paul Jordaan

I don’t wanna be a buzz-killer, but beautiful rugby would have us more in their 22 then so far.

We have shown enterprise, but too lateral on attack so far.

  • Coetzee has been superb. But Chadwick… I know he is a youngster, but I know that he has great physical strength, and its his poor technique in the tackle and carrying the ball that really pulls him down.

By contrast, Klitshof again impresses when you think that that physique and toughness belongs to a 19-year old.

Similar stories for Coetzee, Etzebeth and Kolisi.

  • Well done Stormers – gritty win.

As for us, good progress, and 2 points away from home isn’t awful. We will be much better with some of our big boys back to get the momentum – even without that, we are still creating opportunities.

Great games from Bosman, Coetzee (the fumble at the end should not detract from a great game) and Sykes (glad to eat humble pie on that one).

Our young props, Bismark and Skeate were not so good. And I think we need to look beyond Ludik on the wing.

  • Disappointing really considering how positive things were looking in the first half. Our props need to hit that scrum machine and magically put on another 20kgs each otherwise they’re going to get tossed around like red headed step children this season. Plum needs to have a quiet word with Daniel about his discipline. Unforgivable indiscipline from someone who should be leading by example.

  • Jeez we were poor at set piece .Bismarck and Daniel both giving away to many penalties ,Bismarck however had some hugely positive contributions whereas Daniel was just poor in almost every aspect of play ,not good from a captain .
Must say I can’t see the Stormers doing well this year . Sharks really need our big boys back from injury .
I was impressed with Sykes today ,him and Coetzee were stand outs . Koster won motm pfff what a load of hs, Coetzee was the best forward on the park tonight by far.
The Sharks will never succeed if they don’t start capitalizing on possession and scoring when they are in the opposition 22.
Oh MB player really well and it will be a fight for that 12 jersey .

    Woohoo what a game.
I thought you guys has us at half time. What a kick from Grant to seal the match. Don’t know what Daniel was thinking. Walk with pride guys, you played a magnificent game, but a few too many repeat offenders in the penalty department. A pity about Bissie, he was your best player in my opinion. Now away with you to visit ruination upon the Lions, while we sup upon the fruits of victory.

Defensively JPP look a bit dodgy at centre, Ludik out, Jordaan in.
Mcleod in, du Toit in Alberts in.

Keegan was good but cost us the game and that is the bottom line. Catains can not cost us games, he is not a captain.

  • Sad that we lost the game, particularly due to poor discipline, and more so given that it was from our leadership corps.

Nonetheless, I thought Keegan was actually pretty damn good overall. So too were a number of people over who there had been question marks (e.g. Meyer Bosman). Overall I’d say there was much to feel good about, even though the game was there for the taking.

Was also pleased that Plun had the minerals to bring some of the young, untried substitutes on with more than five minutes remaining.

There’s a lot we’ll have to improve on if we are to be contenders, but for the first time in YEARS I actually believe we have the ability to pull of those improvements.

  • @robdylan (Comment 118) : His game will not change but he will be able to lead the team in tactical decision making. Let’s face it those decisions are made during stoppages and he has a cool enough head on him to take the right decisions during those periods, AS DOES DANIEL, but we can’t afford to have our Captain give away multiple penalties each week.

I won’t take you on about Daniel’s (Ice the s is allowed in this instance) penalty count, but currently the incomplete stats at RugbyStats has him at 2PKs tonight and giving away 3 turnovers. I will wait for the final stats before I quote the specifics. ;-)

If Peterson hadn’t missed 4 kicks we wouldn’t have even had the bonus point. If Lambie had made his other kicks we would’ve won. You can go on and on and on but it isn’t going to change the fact that one player doesn’t lose the game. Each and every player is accountable.

Great effort, great ball stealing…still need to work on discipline, but if we got the whole excecution of what I believe the plan was right, this would have been tickets for the Stormers. What I believe now is missing is we need to gel as a team…and finish what we start.

Am I dissapointed, of course I am, especially after seeing our forwards doing a great job! (When I doubted them to be too light).

  • Keegan Daniel had a great game! He was very good with ball in hand, good at line-outs, think 8 is his best spot, ps. I saw a foot on the line there, may be wrong, dont have pvr. Bismarck did make a few mistakes, but his line-outs were great! He stole a few at the breakdown, and that penalty for playing the ball on the ground was sketchy to put it nicely! Lambie had a great game! Fred was better, but stil not good enough. Marcell should’ve been MOTM! Having two inexperienced props was suicidal, but they did very well considering. Sykes improved, but I know he has more to offer! Skeate was very good in the Line-outs, but nothing more. Meyer Bosman was marvelous! Timmy wil struggle to get the 12 jersey back! JPP was very good, yet again! And what more can be said about Mvovo! Viljoen had a cracker!

  • If anyone cares for an outsiders opinion on Daniels, I thought he played well today. He gave away a few penalties, but that’s only because he made sure that he was in the thick of it as often as possible, like Bissie. He made one big mistake at the end but he was trying to stop a Stormers advance that had the momentum. Go easy on the guy.

You should however move JP back to wing. His raw pace is better suited there and there are other options for you at centre.

On a brighter note, how about that kick from Bash eh. Cometh the hour cometh the man, and not a moment too soon.

  • On a bright side of things. We collected a bonus point. Away bonus point is great. At home we need need to secure wins…… Just hope against the Lions we get the win and then concentrate for the bonus. Just need to win against the Reds. After that we on the road. Any win or bonus on the road is really a bonus point to us, well strictly speaking. Heck this is a long, long tourney only ending in August. Keep supporting our boys anything could happen in-beteen.

    Go Sharks..

Sharks could have won both really; just no to be. Giving away too many penalties have cost us. Well that is how I feel.

Now at home against the Lions and Reds. If we win both thosse games we head overseas on our away games on a high. Hoping to win both those games at home. Our first two games at Kings Park. Good luck to my Sharks.

  • Frustrating 2nd half again. One thing sharks missing is a captain, IMO keegan is missing the leadership skills needed to do the job. Also wats up with plumb an moving lambie to 15 in both games? Viljion is doing a decent job there. And when will he put burden on? I also think that the players should get fined or some thing for blatant stupid penalties eg: keegans from the side at the end. There’s got to be some punishment given to the players cause ouir discipline at the break down is shocking

With all that possession and the Stormers constant handling errors my gut feeling is we should have come away with at least one try. Don’t know who to point the finger at but it worries me.

  • Disappointing game and result again.

Almost a carbon copy of last weekend’s game. Tight first half and then our indiscipline cost us again. If Joe Peterson had got his kicks as Morne Steyn did last weekend we wouldn’t be semi-self congratulating the team…

I will say it once more, the captaincy just does not sit very well on Keegan’s shoulders. I do not believe that he can even command a starting position for every game so I foresee difficulties with this John Smit-esque captain reservation. However, in spite of giving away his usual brace of penalties he still had one of his better games for a while – but I really don’t think he should be captain, it seems to weigh him down.

To win the title you really need to win the conference and win it well to give yourself a home semi. To win the conference you really have to beat at least one of the Bulls or Stormers away from home. Our job is now a very difficult one. There will now also be incredible pressure on the Sharks to win the return fixtures against the Stormers and Bulls at home, indeed to win every game from now if we want to seriously challenge this season.

    Oh well.

  • @Leviathan (Comment 198) : @diablo (Comment 199) : A team’s away strip is to be worn vs. local opposition when their home colours may conflict with that opposition, and on any overseas tour games, unless their away strip conflicts with the colours of the opposition, in which case they will revert back to their home strip.
Thus all 5 S.A. teams will wear their home colour in S.A. unless the colours are similar, Sharks’ black vs. Stormers’ navy or Cheetahs’ white vs. Lions’ white or Stormers’ navy vs. Bulls’ blue, in which case the home team plays in home colours (prepare for a pink Newlands). The pink jersey will be worn 5 times this year

  • My fellow Sharks, don’t know how we lost the game last night but what I can say is that I’m proud of the boys. As I wrote last week, it’s early days and the competition isn’t won after the 2nd round. Yes, victories are important but the most important thing for me at this stage bearing in mind that we didn’t have much of a preseason in terms of game time, is the way we play. Last night showed a huge upward curve, long may it continue to rise. We’ve had two games now so no more excuses. I want results and won’t be as accommodating if we lose more games. Well done to the boys, a special mention must go to Coetzee (he needs to be in the match 22 when Alberts and Deysel are fit, outplayed Kolisi), Bissie, Lambie, Bosman (told you he’ll come around), JPP, Freddie, Skeate, Herbst, Chadwick..stuff it, everyone played well. Need to work on our discipline. Loved the tempo of the game.

  • Bosman was good; but he isn’t a good combo with JPP, jp wants space to run onto, he doesn’t wasn’t to get the ball right on the advantage line.

P.Jordaan needs to come in at 14…he is the only guy in our 22 who hasn’t been given a proper run…especially against the loose Lions, Jordaan could have a great starting debut.

The team i hope is selected, we can’t drop Bissie and Keegan as much as we want to after last night

    1.Chadwick
    2.Bissie
    3.Jannnie
4.Sykes…was back to his best yesterday, we should maybe start bresler at 4 in a game soon so Sykes can stay fresh.
    5.Skeate
    6.Botes
    7.Coetzee
    8.Keegan
    9.Mcloed
    10.Lambie
    11.Mvovo
12.Whitehead, hopefully he is fit for selection this week.
    13.JPP
    14.Jordaan
    15.Viljoen
16.Burden…must come on with 60 to go, bissie needs some rest.
    17.Herbst
18.Roberts…Chadwick needs to get some rest.
    19.Bresler
    20.Alberts
    21.Fred
    22.Bosman

Sharks need 10 points from our next 2 home games to leave for tour with 12 points from 4 games is solid; then when we come back from tour we must make sure we reverse those away results to the Bulls and Stormers. Sharks should’ve got that draw last night…lost 2 points there…need to make up for that with Bonus point wins in the next 2 weeks.

    C’mon Sharks!!!

I thought your heads would’ve exploded (like the fembots from Austin Powers) trying to process how a Stormers front-row could fold a Sharks front-row, or a Stormers loose-forward, one who’s previously been ridiculed on this website, got MOTM against a Sharks team loaded with so much depth in the position.

On a more serious note, the Sharks, IMO, just have gaps. The balance isn’t perfect and they lack some direction. Many of the players have still been very very impressive. Definitely see what you lot have seen in Marcell Coetzee, very good player.

And also a bit harsh on Bissie. Thought he had an alright game.

Stormers scrum monstered the Sharks. I think some folks need to be more realistic about Chadwick – he still has some way to go. But Klitshof was quality.

Funny thing about the loosies – I was thinking how come, with all that loose forward depth, and the Sharks missing 3 Bok loosies, ours still out-played yours?

Oh I heard that Koster won MOTM – but even you must admit that was a joke. Coetzee was by far the best player out there yesterday, and while I haven’t checked the stats, I think their was more yardage and steals from our guys.

Stormers defence and overall discipline (especially at the breakdown) was as good as one has come to expect. Ac is a quality coach.

I agree, but would put Koster up there with them.

Huge workload, and he’s added a physical edge to his game. Pops up at the right time making important tackles and actually making crucial runs through the middle.

I said it a few weeks ago… Springbok by the end of this year. Meyer will go for a guy who will add HUGE variation as a number-8. Not many more dangerous runners in the game, and he’s definitely working on his weaknesses.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 222) : I can’t agree.

I think Meyer will not opt for broken-field runners at 8 (which makes it unlikely that Kanko or Daniel will smell a Bok jersey soon), and Koster is not strong enough to dominate in the collisions or break the line in the tight.

I agree with an earlier statement that Pat won’t be a Bok 10 as long as his kicking percentage is under 80%, and along with that kind of gameplan, the 7 and 8 Meyer will play will be similar players – like a Schalk and Juan/ Alberts or (left-field) Coetzee combo.

If I had to choose a player for the Sharks from the Stormers loosies, I would pick Koster after Kolisi, who I think is still improving and will be even better in years to come.

I know The Sharks will just keep getting better…Alberts coming back; in a couple of weeks Deysel back…it is all good!! Just hope Plum rotates…Chadwick is gonna need a rest soon, so we need to get our Loan signing ready.

  • Taking it a bit far with the observation that Coetzee was twice as good,Nick Koster though had a fine game and was immense for the Stormers on a night where most of their forwards had butterfingers,he brought about good momentum when clearly some of his teammates were hellbent on halting it. Defensively he did a solid job, while Coetzee was probably the best loosie,Koster was the best player in a team that somewhat was destined to lose had the Sharks been on the beat last night, tell you what though Stormers have some fine youngsters in that side. Koster I also might have a shot at the Boks this year. The Stormers centres are rubbish though, should’ve held onto Sam Lane, while he was a brilliant flyhalf,he had the makings of a very good inside centre and stick JP du Plessis at outside centre, for leadership purposes persist with Jean at 12,Juan de Jongh, good impact player,he got by in the 2010 because of the unknown factor, but now he’s a big no for me particularly for the Boks, how good did Wynand look for the Bulls

  • Sharks got such a raw deal with the fixtures, i mean who wants to play away games against Bulls and Stormers 1st up? It Sucks, could’ve won both had the discipline been better and that is encouraging going forward into a “easier” run of home fixtures. Fix the discipline and get Alberts, Deysel and Beast fit and we can def. have that chance at lifting the title…But it is key that we Beat Bulls and Stormers at Kings Park later in the tournament. Gotta finish Top of the conference…away knockout games are always a mission.

  • The most concerning thing for me was the Sharks failure to capitalise in the opposition 22, they looked good in open play but just came up empty handed when searching for ideas on how to finish.

Set piece has been a problem for some time and it doesn’t seem to be a major concern for Plumtree.

I’ll say it again ,if I were a Stormer fan I would be troubled . The Sharks played poorly, away from home with a new look side and a lightweight pack, experiments all over the backline and still managed to dominate possession and territory in the first half.
I’m not too worried about the Sharks, some of the players are struggling with form (Bismarck and Daniel, our two breakdown specialists) but then reflecting on most of the games breakdown specialists seem to be struggling under the way the refs blow that facet of play. Fix the set piece and implore the guys to build more phases on attack and things may turn around nicely for us, oh and with Alberts and Deysel returning it adds considerable experience and grunt to our pack.

  • Cheetahs and Sharks to fight it out for the wooden spoon, gonna put my neck on the line and say Bulls will top the SA conference,Cheetahs are nowhere without their senior players, not too chuffed with their 2nd row, their midfied lacks creativity,Goosen uncomfortable under pressure. Hennie Daniller solid at the back, but is woefully 1-dimensional on attack. The creator in this team is Sias Ebersohn, but he spends more time on the wood. Lions need someone else on the right wing and I’ve never liked Franco van der Merwe,a bit overrated, sometimes a youngster needs to be groomed,Ruan Botha is their answer there,a bit young, but has all the potential to be a star at no.5. Bondesio, good scrummy, but am sure a fit and an on form Ross Cronje would offer a bit more than Bondesio. Watch out for Pat Cilliers could surprise few with a Bok call-up . Stormers, their youngsters all looking good, all their loose forwards look like classy players. Etzebeth,he’s another 1 I think will don the Bok jersey soon, you certainly can’t find fault with that pack, though their handling left much to be desired last night. Grant into the starting line up as soon as possible,GvA is rubbish, equally rubbish are both the guys outside him. Habana tries very hard, his commitment is commendable. Sharks, they are just rubbish, lost two games that they should’ve won,Michalak isn’t a quality 9. Ludik is nowhere on the wing. Bosman is playing some good rugby. Marcell you beauty. Lambie has done reasonably well, will Burden ever get a time on the park. Bulls doing okay at the moment, while last night was a great performance, the Cheetahs were awful. Adriaan Strauss was fighting a 1 man battle. Still think Zane is 1 dimensional,Basson must surely be the winger under the high ball in world rugby right now. Welcome back Wynand. Am I the only who saw a minor improvement in big Flip van der Merwe? Spies and Potgieter looked pretty good. Hougaard is dynamite, this lad is gonna win many matches for the Bulls and Boks. Our front row did really well. Steyn was a bit flatter. We can all take heart from the fact that the Australain teams are playing the way they are,but the Cheetahs based on that performance would made the Rebels look good

Sharks are gonna pump the lions this coming weekend, no doubt in that. Who do u support?…Stormers? • @Big Fish (Comment 250) : This is Super rugby, not Currie Cup and whilst the focus must be on winning deep down I will be disappointed if the Sharks cannot beat the Lions at home with a bonus point (said with as much humility as possible).

After slipping up in the first two games, we need to target the four games against the Lions and Cheetahs for bonus point wins if we have any ambition of winning the conference. We don’t play the Rebels this year so we miss that guaranteed 5 pointer, but then we don’t play the Crusaders either so that neutralises not playing the Rebels.

  • To support my previous comment, again with as much humility as possible, one need only look at the Sharks’ record against the Lions in Super rugby to say that this really is a match we should be targeting for a win AND a bonus point.

Bonus points or rather the lack of them is something which has prematurely ended the Sharks season in the past.

Since 1998 played 16 won 12 lost 2 drawn 2 and the average score is 30-17. We have not lost to the Lions since 2001.

And as a fan that is predictable. But if you want to be constructive, then you have to tailor your expectations to proven ability and circumstance.

And in that context, the Sharks will do well to beat a Lions side that is on an upward curve, with the form flyhalf in SR so far.

We really should expect them to beat the Lions at home.

Let’s break it down even more simplistically. There is no conceivable significant difference between the Sharks and Bulls (at least there shouldn’t be) and yet the Bulls have won super rugby THREE times. Their fans would expect the Bulls to beat the Lions at home, and comfortably too. Says it all really.

Its going to affect training and I doubt it would be dry by Sat. Its the reason I have come on to ask those in the know, came on what will happen if this torrential rain/floods carry on and the pitch is not fit to play? Do we each get two points – or play away this week and play at home when we have to play them at home? This could affect our chances at play offs :(

    Awfully subjective.

The Lions are worse off than us? They already have a victory in the bag. And before anyone mentions home-ground advantage, ask one of the long-time bloggers about how “the Stormers still have to tour”. 4 Points on the log are better than 5 in the bush.

And seriously, the Bulls have won 3 SR titles to our zero – I think its patently clear that their is a very significant difference there; they were the better team then, and according to our last match-up, they still are.

This Sharks team as great potential – but right now its all still potential. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Especially since another loss will likely see many fans breaking out the sackcloth and ashes pretty hurriedly.

    Absolutely!

And that’s a frustration I have been having lately. So many people posting lately as if rugby (and life) is so predictable.

As if 1 or 2 games is enough to prophesy a team’s season, or a player’s career on. Its awfully naïve. But its strangely common nowadays.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 280) : Don’t live in Durban; but i’ve checked many weather reports on sites and news channels, and it sounds the rain will slow down by tuesday; but It could be overcast pretty much the whole week. But they have said it could change…i just hope there is some bright sun, Friday and Saturday…want a good pitch and dry conditions so that our backs can get going on saturday.

This weather system is worrying indeed…hope it clears well before weekend.

  • @ Bif Fish 281 – a voice of reason in the wilderness! Personally, I am now so stressed out – the Bulls aint coming to the party what with topping the log! we traditionally start at a slow pace & were told we’d b in for relegation honours this year! This is just all too much to absorb….!

  • @diablo (Comment 285) : Bulls have their mentality right, and they playing the right gameplan and playing as a team…well from only first 2 games…many more games to come and a lot of chances for teams to come right and for teams to buckle under the stress of a difficult Superugby tournament.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 281) : The Sharks have competed in 3 super rugby finals. The same number as the Bulls.

The Sharks have reached the play off phase on 7 occasions in super rugby, the Bulls on 6 occasions.

Again, there is no conceivable reason why the Bulls are presently sitting with 3 champions medals and the Sharks none.

Sharks need to pull finger and the fans need to drop the acceptance of mediocrity which has been accepted for far too long.

  • @diablo (Comment 294) : There is absolutely no easy games for the Sharks so don’t mistake any comment here as being arrogant. The Sharks never really put teams away, it’s mostly always nail biting, edge of the seat stuff, very strenuous on the heart and health being a Sharks fan. So even when we win, we do it the hard way.

  • I can’t believe how everyone’s got their knickers in a twist over this game. To me it boils down to two points, namely:
    1) The Sharks will have to improve radically if they are to be genuine contenders, but
    2) For the first time in years, one actually gets the sense that a constructive effort is going in towards addressing our shortfalls
Proclaiming us as title contenders is premature, but at least it looks like we’ll have more to smile about and less hair to tear out than in previous years

  • @siorc (Comment 293) :
You are strengthening my point by pointing out these similarities, because despite the similarities of those stats, the one team has achieved huge success, and the other, only moderate.

That prompts the question of why. Looking at the Bulls prior to their golden years, one can see many seasons of failure, and some radical rethinking, which still goes on today – all the way through their union.

And that’s the point – success sometimes needs to be achieved methodically, and enduring success requires sustainable planning – not just bold expectations.

Then we went to my sisters and I saw Umgeni road and the torrential rain and then I really started panicking about something even more important – the match on Saturday

  • Greatsharksays, you are seriously confused if you think Ross Skeate will challenge Andries Bekker and Juandre Kruger for the no.5 jersey. In fact both no.4s will come from the Stormers and Bulls also, while it is notably that Flip van der Merwe isn’t on top form currently,South Africa isn’t exactly overflowing with no.4 locks that are in the form of their lives, well maybe Eben Etzebeth is the exception, while I have no doubt that the lad will be a capped Bok this year,a little wet behind the ears to be thrust immediately into the Bok engine room,so probably a Bekker-van der Merwe combo as 1st choice,Kruger to come off the bench with Etzebeth getting a game here and there, worst case scenario where 1 of our no.5 locks is injured would see Skeate selected (lost all confidence in Al Hargreaves)

  • skeate is so so…he is not even pushing juandre kruger who seems to exude class & is far more mobile & instinctive in his reading of the game. Skeate will smell Bok jersey in an injury crisis.

  • @siorc (Comment 293) : Agree 100% @Culling Song (Comment 297) : I don’t think there is too much to improve, we could’ve won both games had discipline been even average…main thing is discipline which is simply a mental attitude, and we also need some of our BIG names fit, again. Alberts back this week will be a big help…and i will also not stop saying that Du toit needs to be given a shot at 7 and get a bench spot…i believe he is a better Lock than Bresler amd Marais; and he is also a very capable ball carrying option…i think momentum has been a huge impact on our performance in the first 2 games.

We showed lots of guts(Our Pack was 50kg lighter) against Stormers; but that means expending more energy, which impacts on our ability to finish off. We need some Big men back in our pack…the balance was totally off these last 2 games. The Pack against Stormers was one of the Lightest i have seen in a very long while from The Sharks.

Yes, we have injured players, but i don’t understand why Du Toit was overlooked…a ball carrier doesn’t need experience to carry the ball up well.

If he keeps on playing like that @ flank, I doubt Plum is gonna give him a shot at 8! He was all over the park with his now famous “lion attacking a buck” type of tackle – it’s beautiful to watch!

  • @Ice (Comment 309) : Exactly why 8 is his best position, he’s very mobile and at 8 there is more chance he will be running at backs rather than running into other big looseforwards  With Alberts back it will allow Coetzee to show his huge array of skills, Coetzee is actually great at offloading, and scoring tries, he just hasn’t been able to quite show us that part of his game, yet, due to Alberts and Deysel being out of action so often.

And obviously Kankowski’s “name” has kept Coetzee outta the 8 jersey ,hopefully in the Reds game we will see Coetzee wear the 8 jersey.

  • @LUDZ; Remember Du toit is young, when Bresler and Marais were making big strides in CC, Du toit was 18 or 19 years old.

Class youngsters overtake the rest…Goosen overtake established Ebersohn, Lambie did it, Frans Steyn did it, Etzebeth is doing it, etc. Quality always trumps experience…Look at what happened to the very very experienced Boks the last 2 years, and look what a youthful and talented Welsh team did in the world cup…experience isn’t the do all and end all.

What has JP du Plessis ever achieved on a rugby field besides a very good outings for his age group teams??

Has he even played Currie Cup rugby?? If not why on earth would you want to play him ahead of one of the best centres in the country?? :???:
