The Lions team to take on the Sharks this weekend has been announced with coach John Mitchell opting to make a few changes to the side that narrowly lost to the Hurricanes at the weekend.

The much publicised prop shortage, which leaves both CJ van der Linde and JC Janse van Rensburg on the sidelines, has resulted in a front row shuffle, with Pat Cilliers shifting to loosehead while Jacobie Adriaanse comes in at tighthead.

Lions: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Doppies La Grange, 12 Butch James, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Joshua Strauss (captain), 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Marius Coetzer, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 Patric Cilliers

Substitutes: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Caylib Oosthuizen, 18 Stephan Greef, 19 Cobus Grobbelaar, 20 Tian Meyer, 21 Alwyn Hollenbach, 22 James Kamana

  • Happy Kamana isn’t starting against us. Killian and van Rensburg are average wingers imo.

  • @Ben i think you are forgetting last years currie cup final where he was exceptional, scoring one try and setting up taute for his. I think under all the circumstaces, this is the best team we have, i wouldn’t drop hollies just because of one bad game, that only mean he is human. :mrgreen: would feel alot more confidant with maku, JC, Wikus and Rhodes back in the team.

    I Realy hope the lions win this weekend, but if they dont, please dont lose it again in the 78th minute do it by 30 points. :mrgreen: just kidding. But i would love a win before the bye.

  • hahahaha @Ben i think Marius Joubert is still on ellis park searching for doppies after the game he had in the final. hahah Just kidding, but its going to be a ripper this weekend. @Zibbie that would be good, we are a bit thin in that department. do you know when Rhodes will be back? we need him as well.

  • Interesting selections here. I thought Marius Coetzer had a good Currie Cup and it will be interesting to see how he goes for the Lions – quite an abrasive player and will bring physicality and more guile at the lineout – good solid player.

    As for the Butch James selection, it gives them an extra kicking option plus extra distribution so they can play both wider and more percentage rugby if necessary.

    @Ben (Comment 3) :
    I think the reason why Van Rensburg and Doppies play is they are very important to the quick tempo rugby that the Lions play. Within that framework they play as extra looseforwards, operating as cleaners at the ruck to ensure quick retention of the ball and also as carrying physical options on attack. When you take Van Rensburg out of that framework and analyse him as an individual player he maybe doesnt rate that highy, but some players are vital to a certain style of rugby.

    Under 21 player

  • @Pat (Comment 19) : I actually rate Doppies as a centre. I do feel that 12 suits him better though.

  • @Ben (Comment 3) : I’d honestly have been happier with Kamana starting against us. He butchers as many opportunities as he creates in my opinion.
