Round 3 of Super Rugby sees one tough weekend of rugby matches, which does play into your hands as a punter, as the return for being on target is much greater. Head on over to the Marshalls World of Sport website and have a look at the following games:

First up this weekend is the Crusaders at home to the Chiefs, with the Crusaders coming off a shock loss at home to the Highlanders last weekend, and the Chiefs coming off a surprise win over the Blues. Both teams will be raring to go in this New Zealand derby match, but I suspect the Crusaders will want to avenge their defeat and will hit their straps against the Chiefs.

Crusaders – 5/10
Chiefs – 19/10

The second Friday game sees the Force host the Hurricanes, who are on route home after their tour to South Africa. The Force come off two defeats while the Hurricanes came from behind to beat the Lions in Johannesburg last weekend. Both teams seem destined for the lower end of the table and will be desperate for win points. This is going to be a very close game, but ultimately the home team will sneak it, purely based on the fact that the Hurricanes are returning from a grueling tour of South Africa.

Force – 1/1
Hurricanes – 1/1

Saturday morning sees an early kick off in Canberra, as the Cheetahs start their tour against Jake White’s Brumbies outfit. The Brumbies had a bye last weekend and scored a good win over the Force in the opening weekend, and will look to remain unbeaten as they aim to defy all suggestion that they are a poor team this year. The Cheetahs come off a hammering at the hands of the Bulls, and will struggle to keep up against a fresh Brumbies team.

Brumbies – 7/20
Cheetahs – 27/10

In what should be one of the matches of the weekend, the Highlanders host the Waratahs in Dunedin, the Highlanders with 2 wins under their belt after the two rounds, and will look to make it three from three as they continue with their current form. Their confidence will be high after beating the Crusaders last weekend, and will look to take advantage of the Waratahs side that has had a mixed bag of results with a loss to the Reds and a win over the somewhat hapless Rebels. This match will be interesting to watch and we should see the New Zealand team taking it.

Highlanders – 7/10
Waratahs – 13/10

The easiest match of the weekend to call, in my opinion, is the Reds game where they will be taking on perennial under achievers the Rebels. The Reds have made a perfect start to their title defence, and will certainly continue in that vain as the Rebels will offer little resistance against the Champion side.

Reds – 2/10
Rebels – 9/2

Game four on this Super Saturday of Super Rugby action sees us hit home shores as the Sharks take on the Lions in Durban, in a repeat of the Currie Cup final about five months ago. Both teams have had their injury concerns in the build up to this game, but one feels that it is only a matter of time before the Sharks score their first win of the campaign, and a Sharks team at home is always difficult to beat.

Sharks – 4/10
Lions – 26/10

The last game of the weekend takes us to Loftus, where the Bulls host the Blues in what should be an epic encounter. The Bulls are two from two and have looked the most impressive South African side so far in the tournament. The Blues have lost both their opening games after being favourites going into both, and it looks like the Auckland based team will go three losses from three as the home team will have too much fire power for them.

Bulls – 4/10
Blues – 23/10

The odds mentioned above are correct at time of publishing the article, and might change closer to kick off.

  • There are a few games this weekend that could go either way. Highlanders – Tahs, Bulls – Blues and Force – Canes.

I’ve got a small bet on the Force as I feel, Shepherd and Brown coming back could make a big difference, not to mention the travel factor for the Canes.

I will also look to trade the Bulls – Blues game inplay as I feel the Bulls are too short. We’ll see what they are made of this weekend when they come up against an overseas side. It’s also time for a talented Blues side to stand up and perform!

It feels like I say this every week, but it is going to be a very interesting weekend of rugby..

  • @Villie (Comment 1) :

I think the Bulls will walk all over the Blues, simply as they have travelled, they are under immense pressure, and the highveld is a crap place to play rugby!

I’m with you on the Force, I have actually gone with them on LMS, so it should be very interesting to see if that risk pays off..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : Interesting…we definitely have differing opinions on the Bulls – Blues game. I could quite easily see the Blues winning it, although obviously hope they don’t.

I’m still not convinced by the Bulls as yet. Yes, they’re 2 from 2 but they’ve only played against a very rusty Sharks and a relatively poor Cheetahs. Want to see how they go against a Kiwi side and then I’ll get a better picture. One things for sure, guys like Werner Kruger and Kirchner won’t have things so easy as they did against Cheetahs!

  • Actually the Crusaders – Chiefs game is another that could be close. Chiefs looked very decent last week and with it being a NZ derby more spice is added. I expect the Saders to come through, but could be tight!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : you went with force?! There are easier picks at this stage! Even a bye is better odds

  • @Rahul (Comment 6) : Could be a shrewd move. You are going to have to use them at some point, so why not when they are at home against a team returning from travels?

We will do the talking on the field again keep on writing off the bulls old chap ;-) it’s nothing new in sharksworld.

Sure the blues are a damn good team but we will not go down without a fight at loftus.

  • Okay here`s what I`ve got :

The fourfold : Crusaders -1.5, Brumbies, Reds, Sharks and Bulls -1.5.
    Got it for 3.05

I tried to stay away from the close ones, lets see if it pays off!

  • @Muzi (Comment 8) : I’m not writing you off. I obviously want you to beat the Blues. All I’m saying is that I want to see how they perform against teams other than SA teams!

  • @Rahul (Comment 6) :

My LMS is planned for the entire season, and I thought this is the Force’s easiest game.

Also, I try use the weaker teams in the earlier part of the season, as they usually get worse as the season goes on.

  • @Villie (Comment 11) :

Why do you want the Bulls to beat the Blues?

Don’t you think it would be better if the Blues won, as that would make it easier for the Sharks to catch them?

  • I’m backing the Cheetahs to upset the Brumbies.
The Bulls should win and hopefully cause some injuries.
Red will cruise to a bonus point win.
    Highlanders should trump the Waratahs.
I think the Sharks/Lions game might actually end up being close.
Chiefs might surprise against the Saders, but I doubt it.
And the Canes should manage to overpower the Force.

  • I’m in two minds with my Starting XV in the FL

Do I go with goosen who is bound to kick quite a few over but will be on the losing side?

    Or

Do I go with lambie who will miss a few but be on the winning side? ;-)
