The Lions have been forced to reshuffle their team for Saturday’s derby against the Sharks in Durban.

According to reports, flyhalf Elton Jantjies and prop Pat Cilliers have both withdrawn from the side, citing a foot injury and a stomach bug respectively.

Butch James moves to flyhalf in a re-jigged backline, opening the way for Alwyn Hollenbach to start at inside centre. In the front row, Caylib Oosthuizen comes in at loose head prop for Cilliers.

Ruan Dreyer and Andries Coetzee are the new men on the bench.

Lions – 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Doppies La Grange, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Butch James, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Joshua Strauss (c), 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Marius Coetzer, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 Caylib Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Ruan Dreyer, 18 Stephan Greef, 19 Cobus Grobbelaar, 20 Tian Meyer, 21 Andries Coetzee, 22 James Kamana.

  • @lostfish (Comment 4) : I Know but now they will go into the game wth even more confidence and one heavy forwards pack, we cant match them in that department and that is where they are gonna play. We have to play with our backs this weekend, even that wont be enough.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 10) : Butch’s kicking isn’t too shabby either. He is more of a crash bang it up the middle flyhalf and doesn’t distribute like Elton does. He is also a solid defender.

  • This should be a easier game for the Sharks now, but we seem to make winning difficult by not keeping the discipline. We have to remember we have Mark Lawrence again tomorrow. Need to be as disciplined as possible.

    Go Sharks……..

  • If we don’t win by at LEAST 15 points i will be very dissapointed. Caylib Oosthuizen; is one of the worst scummaging props around, every time i have seen him he has been monstered or given away tons of penalties, and that was against guys the same age as himslef, now he will be scrumming against some of the best scrummagers in South Africa…we simply have to smash the Lions up front, and that should obviously allow our awesome backline to score some good tries on saturday…Take full advantage of this opportunity Sharks!!!

Sharks must show killer instinct, we have often in the past sat back when we had it easy…we need to be brutal and pile on as many points and tries as possible, Bonus Points and Points difference are so vital in such a difficult SA Conference.

  • Please guys, let’s not be complacent and disrespectful. We are still playing against the current CC champions in a very difficult and uncompromising competition. We have to work very hard to get the desired result. Lions have come here to win, we need to stop them and ensure thaÞ we are the ones celebrating after the game.

sniff sniff ..come now I don’t think anyone has been voor op die wa here ..but hell what more needs to happen for ou to realize that the Sharks are IN here.

Frankly speaking don’t score a bonus point win and u should be dissapointed …the Lions quite literally are on their knees now ..lets not kid ourselves.

The TEAM that won the CC final are mostly missing …CC means squat.

Sharks my hopefully less than 7 … righhhtttttttt

  • Not a bad substitution ;Butch for Jantjies and Hollanbach back at 12. Don’t under estimate Butch ,especially with our pack suddenly beefing up having a good tackler in that channel will be a boost for the Lions.

Sharks will win this game .With whats at stake the guys will be ampd. We all know Daniel is still inexperienced and battles with certain aspects of captaincy but one thing I think he is really good at is motivating the guys, Sharks to come out firing.
