Griquas lay down strong marker

Pote Human’s Griquas side put in possibly the best performance in the opening round of Vodacom Cup action, in downing the ever-fancied Blue Bulls at Loftus Versveld on Saturday.

The men in turquoise beat the Bulls 36-17, scoring 6 tries in the process. Lions discard Jannie Boshoff scored two of those, with discarded Bulls pivot Marnitz Boshoff – no relation – converting three of the six scores. Given the number of reasonably big names in the Bulls side, coupled with a weaker-than-usual Griquas team sheet, the result was a fine one indeed for Human.

In other matches, WP, Free State, the Sharks XV and EP all got their respective campaigns off to a good start with 5-point wins, even though Free State only narrowly pipped the game SWD Eagles 34-30. Boland initially gave Province some issues, but fell away in the second half to succumb to a 22-51 drubbing at the hands of their hooped neighbours. The Kings did superbly to overpower a strong Pampas XV in PE, winning 34-26 after a strong fightback.

The Sharks XV’s 42-0 win over Border sees them top the South Section log on points difference, while Griquas find themselves in second place on the North Section log – pole position there is held by the Pumas after a 55-30 away win over the hapless Valke.

The other big team to lose their opening match was the Lions, who lost to the Leopards by 16 points to 23.

  • But this is really impressive from the Griquas. Seeing that this Bulls team beat the Sharks XV 21 – 0, only 3 weeks ago.
