Sharks need to hook smart ahead of tour

Another cringe-worthy headline, I fear, but hopefully some sense behind what I’m trying to say! The news coming out of yesterday’s press conference that Bismarck du Plessis picked up a knock to his knee during Saturday’s game against the Lions once again reiterates that the Sharks simply HAVE to do more to rotate in this key position.

After round two, we highlighted that a number of players had so far been used flat-out for 160 minutes. We committed to revisit the situation at the end of round four and see whether it was indeed always the same players playing out the whole 80 minutes, but with Bismarck and Keegan Daniel both pulling up lame this week, we may have to do a quick “halfway check point” – yup, strew’s Bob the same seven players, du Plessis, Daniel, Chadwick, Coetzee, Lambie, Pietersen and Mvovo stayed on the field for the full 80 against the Lions as well.

Taking du Plessis as a case in point here, this is a bad situation for two reasons; firstly, the more time the player spends on the field, taking contact, the greater the chance that he’ll eventually break down. Check. Secondly, without the backup player afforded any game time, you end up with nobody ready to step into the breach when your key man goes down – also check.

Now this is not to say that I don’t believe Craig Burden is ready to start against the Reds (or any other side in Super Rugby) – but the poor chap has had very little game time indeed since last year’s Currie Cup and it may take him a while to hit his straps. If he’d been given 20 or 30 minutes over the course of the last three games, though, it would be a different story. With Bismarck nursing a sore knee, if it were up to me and if there were no other factors to take into account, I would bite the bullet and start with Burden this week; the reason being, we simply cannot risk Bismarck ahead of the tour.

The problem with this approach, of course, is Daniel and reading between the lines, it’s him who is in greater danger of missing the Reds clash. With Keegan out, Bismarck will captain the side and if Bismarck is captain, there’s simply no way the coach is going to play him for anything less than 80 minutes. Bit of a quandary, wouldn’t you say?

  • We have to have to have to give Burden some game time! Even if we play him as a flank or back out in the centres/wing where he started off.

He needs to take some contact and run with the ball!

  • I hope Burden gets some game time. He’s a terrific impact player and we need that X-Factor he can provide.

  • would be wise to give Burden 20 minutes at a time, and maybe start giving Lambie the captaincy for 20 minutes at a time. Might as well start now. I think in years from now people will say Teichmann, Smit, Lambie in the same sentence.

  • Sharks just need to win. Who cares how. That isn’t our problem. But another year of battered bodies and no trophy will really start weighing heavy on the players.

  • @jako (Comment 8) : I like the Lambie captain idea , he seems to already have taken some from of leadership on. Definitely when it comes to the backline at least.
