Sharksworld’s Team of the week is brought to you by LaLuxe B&B -

Relax in the Luxury of LaLuxe.

We are a Sharks fan site and the Sharks names may outweigh other teams in this week’s Team of the week, but you have to understand that one of the top teams didn’t play this past weekend and the other one fumbled themselves to a bit of an embarrassing loss. The Cheetahs fought valiantly and probably deserved a win, but they let it go just as much as referee Keith Brown gave it away with poor set piece decisions, letting their grip on the match slip the closer it got to the end. And the Sharks looked pretty dominant against the Lions to me, so I think the numbers reflect a pretty objective view of how this weekend played out.

We have 2 ties this week and therefore 17 players, with 9 Sharks, 3 Cheetahs, 3 Bulls and 2 Lions.

15. Jaco Taute (Lions)

Young Jaco is becoming one of the front runners for fullbacks when it comes to back selection. A strong runner, an exciting runner, spot gaps with ease, a good and powerful kicker, out of hand and to the post from as much as 60 plus meters out. Seriously, if this kid continues this form, the bok selectors won’t be able to ignore him.

Wings (Since we had a three way tie, I thought I’ll mention all of them together).

14/11. Odwa Ndugane, Lwazi Mvovo and Willie Le Roux (Sharks, Sharks, Cheetahs)

Odwa is now the old man on the block, but proved again to critics this weekend that there is still some pace left in those legs when he chases a Lambie kick and eased past Lions wing Micheal Killian. So all the things we’ve been saying about Odders is still true, he gets involved, runs great lines, and is strong in the tackle, but now you have to remember he is also still faster than a 26 year old.

Lwazi is improving with each game and still has more to improve on, but his pace and explosiveness cannot be denied. What an exciting player. It’s great to have him on the wing. I still think his try was a try.

Willie Le Roux, I must say it’s the first time I hear that name, or Willy as the Australian commentators said. What a try he scored last weekend against the Brumbies. Put in the gap by a prop of all things and then he showed some magic footwork and got noticed by a few important and some not so important people (like me). He also showed class in putting away Tewis De Bruyn for his try, stepping one player and then timing the pass perfectly to put Tewis away.

13. JP Pietersen (Sharks)

Does the Sharks have the new best number thirteen in the world. It’s to soon to be saying things like that, but I don’t care. The way JP is playing has me really excited. The Sharks aren’t perfect yet, but our back line is day and night compared to recent years and JP has a lot to do with that. What a break. One hand of. One step. Then a sprint. Turn and find the support. And celebrate with the crowd on the sideline. Awesome moment.

12. Tim Whitehead (Sharks)

Timmy. Thank you. We welcome you to the Sharks. Where your side step, vision and ability to get over the advantage line will always be appreciated. (I’m sorry, this is tainted with black and white, but this is Sharksworld, and we haven’t had a good center for a very long time). I sincerely hope this is just the start of things to come and that I will not regret going on like this so early.

10. Patrick Lambie (Sharks)

Last week “some bloggers” complained that we will never criticize Lambie and I promised that if Lambie delivers a below par performance again that I will be the one to point it out in an article. I was so glad when Lambie slipped through a tiny break in the opening minutes of the game, because I just knew he will deliver the type of game we have gotten used to. Attacking the gain line, using his center pair, great tactical kicking, absolute control. Lovely. More of this Lambie.

9. Jano Vermaak (Bulls)

The only scrumhalf to get more than one vote this weekend. They were all average, which is surprising, because in recent years this has been one of the areas where South Africa has never had a problem with talent. Hopefully our scrumhalves just had an off weekend. None of them did anything wrong, we just didn’t see any of the standout performances that we’ve gotten used to from our scrumhalves. Next week Francois Hougaard is back and the rest of the scrummies will be disappointed that they didn’t perform better in his absence.

8. Pierre Spies (Bulls)

The man is really leading from the front. He seems to have taken quite a liking to the role of captain and looks like he’s fast returning to the player that was seen as one of the best loose forwards in the world.

7. Marcell Coetzee (Sharks)

Again Marcell Coetzee impresses. This time with the number six jersey on his back, but he did all the usual things he he does when he plays at seven or even eight. He’s a loosie, and at this moment one of the inform loosies in South Africa. Hopefully Plumtree won’t burn him out and give him some rest in due time.

6. Heinrich Brussouw/ Jacques Botes (Cheetahs/Sharks)

Brussouw was his usual self on the ground and it’s great to see the stocky loose forward getting back to his best form, but Jacques Botes, even though he doesn’t posses the skill Brussouw has in this area makes up for it in everything else he does. Always solid, Botes just never seems to let his team down and this past weekend was present in much of what the Sharks did. It’s a draw at the blindside this week.

5. Juandre Kruger (Bulls)

It wasn’t as clear cut this weekend, with Bulls producing a struggling performance this weekend it was hard to pick a standout from that game, but I suppose the composed figure of Kruger and previous performances just pipped him with one vote over Franco van der Merwer this week.

4. Steven Sykes (Sharks)

A very strong performance from the experienced campaigner. Sykes has never been the flashy type of “stand on the wing and see if I can get enough space to score a try” type of lock, but he doesn’t stand back to some hard work and this week he put in a few more yards of that. It’s nice to have the solid and always reliable lock back in South Africa.

3. WP Nel (Cheetahs)

There has been a lot of talk about the decisions of referee Keith Brown, especially when it came to the scrum, where he gave 5 penalties against the Cheetahs within striking distance. To us it looked as though the Cheetahs scum had the upper hand all day long. It seems as though referee Keith Brown might be in quite some trouble for the way he handled this area of the game.

2. Bismarck Du Plessis (Sharks)

The man is doing everything in his power to answer the call of his critics and prove that he deserves “the best hooker in the world” tag. He still gave away maybe a few to many penalties, but with the influence turn-over possession had on the game you can forgive him for taking a few chances. He’s also starting to get over the advantage line more and maybe that has to do with the support of fellow bolder Willem Alberts, but whatever it is, it’s good to see. Line-outs still needs work.

1. Caylib Oosthuyzen (Lions)

Put in a solid performance against the Sharks.

  • Really like the look of viljoen at fb for the sharks although I have rated taute for a while now. I was sitting right in front of jp wen that try was scored and u could just c the passion on his face. Every try he celebrated like it was a world cup winning try. Good to see he still has that passion

  • @Ice (Comment 60) : you always have a choice! Remember, this is to help you, not to point fingers or make you feel bad. My Afrikaans is bloody awful, so I’ll never point fingers.

That said, if we’ve got people with spare time willing to help with proof-reading, makes sense to use them if it improves the overall standard of the site?

  • @robdylan (Comment 63) : I agree, and I don’t mind being helped at all. Having said that, its not always nice being showed on grammer ens spelling mistakes, and the content of your article is being overlooked…

We all do this for the love of the site and the Sharks, but I speak for myself when I say that I want to be better and really try. Sometimes, having to write an article on a phone and within limited time inbetween the “real job”, might leave gaps for errors!

  • @Ice (Comment 64) : yes, that’s the thing, but it’s also human nature that people tend to pick out the small errors, while ignoring the 99% that’s really well done.

  • @Ice (Comment 64) : as long as you know that I’m not too fussed. I would far rather HAVE an article with some grammatical and spelling errors than NOT HAVE an article at all… and a lot of the people who like to point out errors don’t contribute any articles at all.

  • @Ice (Comment 64) : and I apologise to Letgo for showing the “moement”, but I honestly thought it had to do with the comp. I did not mean to take anything away from her article, as I find her knowledge of the game inspirational!

  • @robdylan (Comment 66) : Having said I am pedantic about the spelling doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the effort that goes into writing the article. I really do enjoy the site and the articles.

  • @Ice (Comment 68) : Sorry if I made you feel kak. I know how difficult it is to have to do something in another language. I had to start learning another language and now live in France where I have to do pretty much everything in French. The sad thing is that my Afrikaans was never really very good growing up in Durban and going to an English speaking school. I have never had to use Afrikaans outside of school either apart from it being rather useful in Belgium. I am sorry if I offended you as I do realise the effort that goes into writing the articles and keeping the site going and I do spend a portion of my day here when I can and when the Beast is playing or napping (not often enough)

  • hehe . Im the last one to fix spelling mistakes . my downfall in English test where ‘Find the 5 spelling mistakes in the piece’ .

Even my Afrikaans spelling is horrible . ‘Proebleem’ is my favorite word .

I think one should worry more if people stop helping you . Cause then they stopped caring .

  • @Zibbie (Comment 74) : I had a drill sergeant type of English teacher at primary school who would drill us with spelling. If we got it wrong we would have to write the word out 100 times. If you got more than 5 words wrong you had to go to extra spelling classes. Who knows how many trees I killed writing out words. Sometimes she would point to you in the corridor and tell you to spell something. I used to read the dictionary for just in case… She was also a fiend with grammar and I happened to have her as my class English teacher from Std 1-5. She was actually a fantastic teacher and I think she must be rolling over in her grave with all the text speak going around today.
