The Sharks XV host Western Province on Saturday in a curtain raiser to the Super Rugby clash against the Reds, in a match that is billed as a Top of the Table clash, as the Sharks lie first and WP second after the first round of matches.

The Sharks are boosted by news that Paul Jordaan will start for the Vodacom Cup team, joing the experienced Marius Joubert in the midfield. More good news is the return to rugby for Conrad Hoffmann after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Personally, I would have liked to see loan signing Janro van Niekerk getting some game time here, seeing as he is set to tour with the Sharks next week.

The Sharks XV
15. Gouws Prinsloo
14. S’bura Sithole
13. Paul Jordaan
12. Marius Joubert
11. Wandile Mjekevu
10. Fred Zeilinga
9. Cobus Reinach
8. Lubabalo Mtembu
7. Brynard Stander
6. Francois Kleinhans
5. Pieter-Steph du Toit
4. Peet Marais
3. Nick Schonert
2. Monde Hadebe (Capt)
1. Danie Mienie

Replacements:

16. Kyle Cooper
17. Allan Dell
18. Braam Steyn
19. Chris Cloete
20. Conrad Hoffmann
21. Heimar Williams
22. Jors Dannhauser

  • So:

No Deysel, meaning he is not ready yet..

No Jandre Marais, meaning that Skeate will most likely not make the Sharks 22 and Jandre will cap off the bench..

  • Are we going for a 5-2 split then? Why on Earth isn’t Jordaan on the bench for the senior side?

  • @ChrisS (Comment 2) :

We could possibly see both Jannie and Janro on the bench this weekend, with Burden Botes and Marais..

McLeod/Michalak and Ludik to cover all the backline positions.

  • So no room for Jordaan on the senior bench – and no Deysel in this team. And the Reds have gone 5/2 on their bench…

Anyone else thinking what I’m thinking?

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : I agree that Odwa was superb but what about switching Odwa to 15 (I think that’s where his future lies anyway) and giving Jordaan a good run.

I’m happy he’s getting to start a game but I don’t want to end up like WP where we deny our talented youngsters game time and they move away.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 14) : this is the point I was trying to make yesterday, which nobody would listen to.

We DID NOT SIGN janro van niekerk. He remains contracted to griquas. All we have done is drafted him into out super rugby squad as a loan player. The specifics of the loan agreement preclude him playing vodacom cup for us. He would not be able to anyway since he played for griquas last week.

Regarding what we pay him – we’re not paying him anything. We’re presumably paying griquas to be able to use him.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 15) : jordaan is 20 Ffs and has already made the super rugby squad ahead of joubert and ludik. If the oke wants to throw his toys about one game for the vodacom side then I really give up.

Neither odwa nor viljoen did anything wrong last week. So why drop them? Back youth if your incumbents aren’t delivering, not if they are.

I mean if i was any of the Sharks XV guys id be on the phone to my agent to get him to find out from Stauli and Co where they now lie in the pecking order. I do understand thats its a case of only using him in an emergency tho.

If anything, as a mienie, schonert or dell I would take great heart from the fact that janro is not seen as a strategic option, not at all.

  • Poor Odwa comes in for a lot of flak and I feel its all due to his “lack of pace”, sure he is not as quick as many other wings but he is as safe as houses and reads the game so well, and he somehow often manages to shift the ball when he is tackled.

  • as we still await the Sharks team announcments , here is the team i think they will play, I am also thinking there might b e a surprose re the front row of the sharks :?:

    15. Riaan Viljoen,
    14. Odwa Ndungane,
    13. JP Pietersen,
    12. Tim Whitehead,
    11. Lwazi Mvovo,
    10. Patrick Lambie,
    9. Frederic Michalak,
    8. Keegan Daniel (Captain),
    7. Willem Alberts,
    6. Marcell Coetzee,
    5. Anton Bresler,
    4. Steven Sykes,
    3. Wiehahn Herbst,
    2. Bismarck du Plessis,
    1. Dale Chadwick/Jannie Du Plessis,

Replacements:16. Craig Burden, 17. Jannie du Plessis/ Dale Chadwick,18. Jandre Marais, 19. Jacques Botes, 20. Charl McLeod, 21. Meyer Bosman, 22.Louis Ludik

At prop it could also be Jannie to start and Wors to bench?? who knows.
Not sure if Keegan is still on injury doubt list? but if he is one could see Botes start with PSDT benching?

  • On Jordaan, think it is great he is getting game time. No use just sitting on the bench for the Senior Team. He is bound to tour with the Seniors and this is a ideal time to get game time before we leave.

Think Odwa was great last week like he normally is. Though we also need to make sure your talented youngsters know they are not forgotten. Would play Odwa for 60 or 65 min each game and bring on Jordaan later.

On our Vodacom side. Looks a strong side that. If it is shown definitely will watch. Really want to see how Jordaan and especially Steph du Toit go and of course Mjekevu, Sithole, Zelinga and Reinach. Some very good talent there.
